Obituary: This is an obituary for the recently deceased Julie Dransfeldt. She died at the age of 40 in Portland, Oregon at the Adventist Hospital at 10:20AM on 3rd, 2016. It’s bizarre that when someone sits to write, they begin with a blank page and end with a story. In this case, my contribution will be the closing chapter in my mother’s novel. People are sometimes rushed, and as a result their work is incomplete or imperfect. I write this closing piece because it seems that my mother, who many cared for, was rushed, and did not have the opportunity to complete her time on Earth. These are sad times for my family, but the first step of coping is to remember what we loved. Julie cherished her children the most. Of all her desires, there had lain a dream to establish a close family, and her concern for her children made that visible. She had three children: John, Jacob, and Isabelle. We were her priority, and her virtues live through us. I gaze now at her vast collection of baby pictures (of us), and wonder what it was that she loved about those drooly alien faces. As long as I can remember, pictures of us have adorned the walls, and the walls of her room were no different. I still remember how upset she was when I had told her that my baby shoes were taken when I was moving. She would openly express her pride in our achievements, and it wasn’t uncommon for her friends and coworkers to tell me that she did. She wanted the best for us because she knew we could get the best. Asides from her children, Julie was passionate about her music. Many of my musical tastes descended from her own, and in 2014 we had gone to see Pearl Jam. She was happy that I’d gone, and although it wasn’t the best night, she enjoyed herself and I learned a life lesson. But I stand by my word when I told her not to spend $65 on those Pearl Jam hoodies. It’s almost always a bad idea to buy things at those conventions. She purchased a hoodie anyway. She had a tendency of bestowing objects with sentiment, as a sort of keepsake to refresh her memories. Finally, my mother didn’t have many material possessions of high value, but Julie’s most prized were her collection of Mickey Mouse statuettes, baubles, and snow globes. Since my birth, she had always liked collecting them. During the holidays she’d take out the snow globes along with fine spun glass, and she’d create small displays. The spun glass, which is very dangerous, would create a reflective cloud-like appearance that the Mickey snow globes would rest on. It was as if Mickey and Minnie Mouse were atop a cloud in a snowy house just outside of reality. As a result, we had always been a bit of a Disney household. an incident caused a shelf to tip, she was so scared of more accidents that she boxed them away so that the little statuettes and globes couldn’t be harmed again. It was always in her nature to protect what she loved. Alas, the good times don’t last forever. Ultimately, her battle with alcohol and opiates took her from us. Having seen so many people in my life succumb to substances, I can’t stress enough to never get involved. Instead, let this be a lesson that addiction can consume, and that reaching out for help is not a weakness but is instead a display of willpower. Obituary: Virginia Lee Drake, age 93, died peacefully at Avamere at Sherwood Assisted Living and Memory facility in Sherwood Oregon on , 14, 2016 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for many years. Born 5, 1922 in Clayton Kansas; Virginia (known as Jinks to her friends and family) lived in Clayton Kansas, Medford Oregon and eventually Portland Oregon where she met her husband, Robbert (Bob) Drake and settled in Aloha Oregon to raise a family of 4 children. Virginia worked for the Beaverton School District in may capacities and ended her career as a principal's secretary before retirement. She traveled extensively with friends after she retired, visiting countries all over the world, adding to her extensive collection of salt and pepper shakers. Virginia is survived by her sons Bob Drake of Depoe Bay, Oregon and Barton Drake of Seattle, Washington and numerous grandchildren an great grandchildren. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Robbert Drake in 1966, daughter Barbara Allison (Drake) in 2012, and son William (Bill) Drake in 2015. A private service and burial will be held on 19, 2016 at Finley Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
