Obituary: RICHARD WESLEY DAY He was born on 7, 1937 in North Hollywood, California and passed away at the age of 77 on 10, 2015 in Medford, Oregon. Richard spent his early childhood years in Sun Valley, California, until the age of 6 at which time his family decided to move back east to Sarasota, Florida, to be near his mother’s relatives. The family lived there until their farm was completely destroyed and all was lost in a hurricane when he was 9 years old. He often told the story of waking the morning after the hurricane to a farm of devastation and flood water. The family was unable to recover from this and made the decision to move back to California. Another story he told many times was of the difficulty experienced during the return trip and especially during a dust storm experienced in the Midwest. The storm was so bad that travel was forced to be made by driving on railroad tracks because roads could not be seen in the dust storm. Richard and his brothers walked the tracks in front of the family car barefoot. This was to help keep the car on the tracks and to feel for the vibration of any oncoming trains. During his High School years he was a car enthusiast and belonged to the “Igniters” car club. The club enjoyed many functions together and Richard and Lorraine attended a reunion as recently as the late 90’s. Another of his favorite stories to tell was of the time he and his younger brother fabricated a sporty and racy looking fiberglass car body and added it to a vehicle chassis and frame with a motor they already had. This project ended up looking like a race car. The boys only had the car for a short time when they were approached by their father who worked for one of the motion picture studios in Southern California. were asked if the studios could borrow the car for a movie Tony Curtis was starring in as a race car driver. Mr. Curtis drove the car in the movie and crashed it into a wall. The car was a total loss and was never replaced but Richard still had pictures of this car in his photo collection. His appreciation of beautiful automobiles continued on throughout his life. In 1956 Richard met the love of his life Lorraine Asavis and they were married in of 1957. spent the first 22 years of their life together in San Fernando, California. Richard worked in electrical sign & lighting fabrication and electrical advertising and held a second and third job on the side in addition as he was always working towards a better future for his family. In 1979 Richard, Lorraine, Mother-in-Law Josephine and Daughter Gina moved to Southern Oregon and never looked back! Richard and Lorraine settled in Central Point and have lived in the same location since moving here. During his life in Oregon he continued to work in electrical sign & lighting fabrication, and was the President of Day Displays, Inc. a point of purchase display manufacturing company. He also worked for Southern Oregon Heating and Air Conditioning as an assistant to the Owner. At the end of his working career he worked for a short time as a goods demonstrator at Costco and often said he really enjoyed that job because it allowed him the opportunity to get out and talk to a lot of people. Over his lifetime Richard enjoyed several hobbies. In his younger years he experienced Deer hunting trips to the High Sierras and Northern California, Elk hunting trips to Colorado and North East Oregon and Wild Boar hunting trips to Northern California. He made several trips to a family ranch in Arizona where hunting of Dove and Quail was a way to put food on the table for dinner. He was raised on Fishing as another way to provide dinner and many trips were made to the High Sierras for Trout and to the Rogue River for Steelhead and Salmon and to the High Mountain Lakes for whatever they might produce. He was also an accomplished artist and was taught the fine art of pencil drawing by the Master Theodore Lukits who felt Richard had a rare ability to understand perspective drawing, definition and shading. Woodworking was a favorite hobby and several pieces of his artistry grace his Daughter Gina’s home. His most favorite pastime of all was to sit and read a good book and his favorite author was Louis L’Amour. For those who knew him well it is said “Richard was one of the kindest and most generous persons they knew.” He was always willing to lend a hand, provide information and give of his heart. He was a story-teller and a poet. He loved life and the outdoors. He loved his family and friends. He was an honest man. He had a strong faith in God. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; daughter Gina Lin Ragsdale and husband John, Eagle Point, Oregon; daughter Sherri Windle and husband Jack, Missouri; adopted daughters of the heart Kim Roby and Brenda Kahut, Central Point, Oregon; and his beloved fur-babies Lexie and Chloe. He was a firm believer in adopting animals from a shelter and providing them with a warm and loving home. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, Oregon 97501. “We must strengthen, defend, preserve and comfort each other. We must love one another. We must bear one another’s burdens. We must rejoice together, mourn together…” Puritan John Winthrop . |

Obituary: The Life Story of Norma J. Day as told by Lisa Hummel Norma Day was a regular volunteer at the Cherry Blossom Loaves and Fishes kitchen in SE Portland. She had been volunteering there since the center opened back in 1997. I met Norma around a year ago when I began working in the Leaves and Fishes kitchen as a service learning assignment for school. A big reason why I still volunteer there is because of my adoration for the seniors, but especially working with this quirky little lady. Theres just something about her voice, her walk and her short stature that emits happiness around her. Shes always got a story to tell or her opinion of the latest movie or her review of the latest American Idol contestants. When she doesn make it in to Leaves & Fishes, her presence is missed by all the volunteers and staff. Norma was born Norma Jean Kimbrel in Perry, Oklahoma on 1st, 1928 to parents Frank and Lou Kimbrel. She was the middle child of three; a brother and a sister. Her mother was a telegraph operator and was a very smart woman of French descent who grew up in New Mexico. Mother would carry a gun because she was afraid of black people\ it was just how it was back then. Her father, who was of English descent, and having just a third grade education, worked as a section boss for the Santa Fe Railroad. I also remember that my father made home brew and my mother made homemade root beer and when mother was working; I would bake apricot pie for my dad because he loved my apricot pie. Norma recalled that there would be weeks at a time when her fathers work would take him out of town and her mother would often go with him. During those times, the children stayed with family or friends. Sometimes I stayed with my aunt and uncle in Redrock, Oklahoma and my uncle would let me ride in his ice truck while he delivered blocks of ice in the neighborhood. Childhood Memories: Normas earliest recollection was when she was three years old and she was playing on a little riding toy in their house and bumped into a large tub full of boiling water that her mother had just filled. She remembers being scalded by the hot water and that her skin turned red. Back then, we had no indoor plumbing\we heated our water with the wood stove\ he water was really hot! And we had no bathrooms either, just an outhouse out back\\ Oklahoma Weather Every other neighbor had a tornado cellar and Normas parents would share their cellar with the neighbors when the Tornados would hit town. I remember one tornado-it tore up the whole railroad track in Tonkawa\father repaired it. Another memory she had of Oklahoma was the big hail storms that would come in; once I was out in the back playing in the tin garage, when all of a sudden we heard thumping\ I thought it was the boys throwing rocks at the tin garage\ but it wasn \ it was the hail storm\ the biggest hail Ive ever seen! When I ran to the house, one hit me on the head and I had a lump there! The Great Depression Unlike many Americans of that time in history, Normas family was virtually unaffected by the Depression. I do remember that the poor people who worked for the WPA were given coveralls to wear. I was just a child then, but I remember seeing these men cleaning and sweeping the streets\my husbands experience was different than mine-when he was 6 or 7 he had to wear those WPA coveralls and put to work. Ponca City, Oklahoma Normas family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma where she attended middle school and became friends with a Native American boy named Walter White Crow. She remembers going to Pow Wows and other celebrations and never feeling awkward or uncomfortable around the Indians. My skin was a little darker and my hair was black so I fit right in-it was fun memories\ we also helped each other with homework. Once in awhile they would bring in these shows and the entire town would go see them and I remember seeing this Dance-a-thon held in a big tent. Red Skeleton was one of the contestants. People would bet on which couple they thought would win-it was real fun because we didn get much in our town. Another show we looked forward to was when the circus came to town. Wed all walk down to the train station and watch the elephants walk off the train and up the road-it was very exciting. Touched by Hollywood: Roy Rogers had his Hundred- and \ one Ranch there in Ponca City and Norma remembers that they would film movies right there on the ranch property. As for other entertainment, she recalled, We didn have a big theater in our town but my mother did take us to see King Kong when it came out. I screamed because that big gorilla looked like it was coming right at me. I was so scared by this big monkey! I was real sensitive back then. Our First Car Father had bought a Model-T and I remember how hed have to get out and crank it in the front to get it running. When we traveled to Kansas City, it would take us one hour to drive 19 miles! World War II By the age of 15, WWII had begun, the men went off to war and it seemed everyone had left Oklahoma. Norma left school and found a job as a telephone operator at a local telephone company. This job was difficult for little Norma; because of her short stature she found it hard to reach the high continued... |
