Obituary: Thomas Eidson Dorris, age 98, of Circleville, Ohio and formerly of Greenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 6:10 am on 11, 2015. Thomas was born 4, 1917 in Adairville, Kentucky to the late Perry and Annie Mae (Eidson) Dorris. Tom is survived by daughters & sons-in law, Martha Frances Dorris & Larry Bennen of Delaware, Ohio; Carmen Yolanda Landa Dorris & Thomas Patrick Astley of Circleville, Ohio; and Tomi Lynn Dorris of Circleville, Ohio; granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Dorris-Astley of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters Virginia Fitzgerald of Florida and Ruby Bolt of South Carolina; and scores of adopted daughters and sons . In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Martha; brothers, James and William Dorris; and sister, Willie Ann Crawford. Tom was a World War II veteran who served in the First Engineers Special Brigade. He completed four D-Day invasions in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy (Utah Beach) and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit then moved to Germany where he was seriously wounded. He spent 6 weeks in an Army hospital in Germany until he was able to return to the United States. Even though Tom wanted to be sent to a VA facility in Nashville, Tennessee, for rehabilitation, he was moved to a VA Hospital in Memphis which specialized in the treatment of traumatic head injuries. He begrudgingly went to a fish fry at a local state park where he met the love of his life, Martha. married on 17, 1946. He applied to receive GI benefits to open a small business in Mississippi but was tested and informed that he was going to college instead. Tom attended Northwest Mississippi Junior for two years and then enrolled at Mississippi State University. Martha worked at a local shoe store and as a secretary at the university to help Tom get through school. He was an excellent scholar and earned admission to Phi Kappa Phi. He graduated with a BS, summa cum laude, in agricultural engineering in 1951. graduation, Tom worked as an agricultural engineer for many years with the John Blue of Huntsville, Alabama. He was instrumental in introducing the use of anhydrous ammonia to the Midwestern United States. In 1955, Tom and Martha left Mississippi to move to Greenville, Ohio with their two daughters, Francy, age 9 and Landa, 1. Tomi came along two years later. Tom would go on the road to sell farm machinery during the week while Martha tended the girls at home. Weekends and summers were spent with his girls. Tom doted on his daughters and granddaughter. He was very proud of his service in the United States Army and was a nine time President of the First Engineers Special Brigade Association. In 1994, He received a Liberation of France medal commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Normandy invasion from the Federation of French War Veterans. He cherished his receipt, in 2009, of the Bronze Order of the de Fleury Medal, the Army Engineer Associations highest honor. Tom was a long-time member of the First United Methodist in Greenville. He was also a member of the American Legion in Greenville. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on , 14, 2015 at Zechar Bailey in Greenville with Pastor Angela Meeks officiating. The family will receive friends on from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Entombment will take place at 11:00 A.M. on , 15, 2015 at Kingwood Memorial Park in Lewis , Ohio with Pastor Joe Payne officiating. Obituary: Carl S. Dorris Jr., age 80 of Edinburg, passed away , 30, 2017. He was born 23, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents Margaret (Sheldon) and Carl S. Dorris Sr. Carl was a member of Charity Lodge #530 F&AM, Bethel Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star - Palmy Chapter. He retired as a member of Ironworkers Local 17. Carl was an avid NASCAR fan, especially rooting for #24 Jeff Gordon. Carl is survived by his children: Debbie (Jeff Baker) Newell, Carl (Debbie Speegle) Dorris III, Eileen App, and Maggie Austin; as well as his many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Obituary: Richard B. Dorr, 67, of Kent, passed peacefully at home , May 25, 2014. He was born 1, 1947 in Cleveland, to r and Adele (Bligh) Dorr. Richard was a 1969 graduate of Case Western Reserve University BA. Richard continued his education at Cleveland State University, M.Ed. 1973 and Kent State University, Ed.S. 1982. While on campus at Case Western Reserve University, Rick Dorr was active in many campus organizations: Chairman of Thwing Student Special events Committee, President of Circle K (Kiwanis), University Congress Concert Chairman, guide for the Admissions office, Buckeye Boys State participant and counselor, and member of the Zeta Chapter of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Rick was being honored by being accepted into Omicron delta Kappa (Organizational Honorary) at Case Western Reserve University. Rick went on to earn a Masters in Education Administration from Cleveland State University thus preparing him for being a school principal. In 1982, he earned the degree of Education Specialist in the Superintendency from Kent State University. Rick retired after thirty-one years in education in 2000. He served sixteen years as a principal and fifteen years as a mathematics teacher. He also taught three mathematics courses at the University of Akron for a semester. Providing an appropriate environment for the development of the middle school child was his specialty. He was a member of the Ohio Education Association, Ohio Middle School Association, the Ohio Association of Secondary Administrators, and Phi Delta Kappa. Further wishing to work with youth, Rick became active in the Boy Scouts of America when his son, Devon, was eleven years old. He stayed on serving the Boy Scouts in such capacities as Chartered Organization Representative, Camp master at The Manatoc Reservation, Wilderness Engineer, and Assistant District Commissioner for Seneca District of The Great Trail Council in the Greater Akron area and Lead Commissioner for Manatoc Summer Resident Camp. He has attended camp as a leader for several years and has served on the staff for more than twenty Boy Scout training sessions. Rick has taught Dutch Oven Cooking, and Selecting, and Procuring Volunteers numerous times at the University of Scouting. He has earned his Wood Badge beads (the highest level of training in Scouting) and has served on the staff of the new Wood Badge Course for the 21st Century. He is a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow (1996) and earned the District Award of Merit in 1999. Rick received the Silver Beaver Award in The Great Trail Council (2004). The Silver Beaver Award was established by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America in 1930. This award is the highest honor a local council can present to an adult Scouter. It is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth in the local council. Richard serves his church as a member of the United Church of Christ of Kent chancel choir; has served on the stewardship committee, education committee, music committee, fellowship committee, growth committee, and on the outreach committee. Rick was heard happily singing amongst the plants at Eagle Creek Garden in Bainbridge where he worked part time for three years in sales and helping customers design their own landscape plantings. Richard has sung with the Hudson Community Choir for five plus years. Richard and Kathleens home in Kent, Ohio received the Beautification Award from The Garden Club of Kent on two occasions and their yard was on the Kent Historical Society Garden Tour the summer of 2009. In of 2009, The Garden Club of Kent honored Rick with the Achievement Award. He is a member of the Portage Retired Teachers Association (PRCTA) and The Garden Club of Kent. We lost our dad too soon. He may have accomplished all of these things, but he was best known for his ability to turn anything into a song, gardening, and loving his wife, children, and grandchildren. We will truly miss those big bear hugs and listening to you read us The Night before Christmas on Christmas Eve. He is survived by his wife and partner of 45 years, Kathleen (Willis) Dorr; beloved children, Heidi (Richard) Cannon of Ravenna, Wendy (Travis) Miller of Kent, and Devon Dorr of Kent; grandchildren, Hailey Christine Cannon, Bryce Alan Cannon, Kasey Lee Cannon, Harland William Dorr, Stella Kathleen Miller and Davis Wilson Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents, r and Adele Dorr; sister, Sally Dorr; brothers, Timothy and r Jack Dorr. services will be held 11:00 AM , May 31st at Kent United Church of Christ with Rev. David Pattee officiating, where friends may call 10:00-11:00 AM , May 31st. Private burial will be held at Standing Rock .
