Obituary: Sara Cashwell Donaldson, 84, died , 3, 2017, at her home at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Sara was born and raised in Hope Mills, NC, daughter of the late Arthur Dixon and Elizabeth Macdonald Cashwell. She has been proceeded in death by three brothers, Malcolm, Richard, and Alexander (Tom), and three sisters, Emily, Margaret, and Francis. She is survived by her daughter, Kara Virginia Donaldson (Robert Wood) of Highland Park, NJ, sons Graham Cashwell Donaldson (Kelly) of Durham, NC, and Alexander Cordlandt Donaldson (Melissa) of New York, NY, and her five grandchildren, Griffin and Duncan Wood, Colin and Kendall Donaldson and Maeve Elizabeth Donaldson. She is also survived by five siblings Lauchlin (Don) Cashwell, Mary Fraché, Angus Cashwell, Prudy Bradley, Janet Holt, twenty-seven nieces and nephews, and their families. graduating from Hope Mills High School, Sara attended UNC-Chapel Hill and received a BA in Physical Education. Sara showed her adventurous streak by first participating in the 4H International Farm Youth Exchange Program to Ecuador, where she lived in Quito and on a banana plantation and learned to speak Spanish, and then applying for teaching jobs all around the country. She chose a position to teach girls gym and health at Tenafly Junior High School near New York City. She moved to Derwood, Maryland, in 1968, where she raised her family, earned a Masters in Education from the University of Maryland, and taught mathematics in the Montgomery Public Schools for twenty-two years between Magruder and Montgomery Blair High Schools. A natural athlete, she was an avid golfer for many years, winning the Women's Member Tournament at Montgomery Village Golf Club in 1973. A faithful and devoted member of Mill Creek Parish for nearly 45 years, Sara attended worship every until she was incapacitated. Sara was a woman who studied her Bible daily and was known for deep love of the scriptures, which she shared with all. An avid reader, she was a member of the Adventure Book Group, where for many years she offered wonderful Christian insights to everything we read. Her love of scripture led her to her ministry as a School teacher, and impelled her to service, as she was a part of Appalachia Service Project (ASP) teams, as well as Volunteer In Mission (VIM) trips to Costa Rica. She not only studied about her faith, she walked and lived it out daily. Sara was a pillar of the spiritual life of Mill Creek Parish congregation, and her faith-filled example will be sorely missed. The family wishes to thank Noemi Serrano de Melgar, who for the last eighteen months has had the goal of making every day a great day for her beloved Sarita.
