Obituary: Verna Matullano David Nickname: Neneng DOB - Nov 26, 1954 Place of birth: General Santos City, Phils. Parents: Leoncio B. Matullano (deceased) Lilia C. Matullano Siblings: 2nd of 8 siblings, 4 boys, 4 girls Vernon, Orville, Sharon, Leonidas, Giovanni, Jemima, Kirsten Schools: Elementary and High School in Polomolok, South Cotabato in Butuan City Name of Spouse: Mayo B. David Married: 28, 1979. Polomolok, South Cotabato, Philippines Verna Matullano David died peacefully at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY on 22, 2014. Beloved wife of Mayo for 35 years, devoted mother of son and daughter-in-law Vernon and SaraJane and proud grandmother of Naomi Rose. Cherished daughter of Leoncio (deceased) and Lilia and dear sister of Vernon, Orville, Sharon, Leonidas, Giovanni, Jemima and Kirsten. Verna loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served Him through all her life. She will be missed by her family and friends. Life Story: On 26, 1954 Verna Matullano was born into a Christian family in Polomolok, South Cotabato, Philippines. Her late father, Leoncio, was the first Municipal Treasurer of Polomok and spent 25 years in government service. wards, he became an ordained pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination of the Philippines. Her mother, Lilia, was Vice Mayor of the Municipality of Polomolok for two terms before martial law was enforced by then President Marcos. As the eldest daughter, Verna took much of the responsibility of looking after her younger siblings as her parents' careers demanded much of their time. Even at a young age Verna, a.k.a. Neneng, was always involved in church and missions. She, and her siblings, spent much of their summers accompanying her missionary aunt, Emerencia - one of first female graduates of Ebeneezer Bible , on missionary journeys in the provinces of South Cotabato. In her young adult years she was active in church ministries such as the PSALM (Philippine Student Alliance Lay Movement) and IVCF (InterVarsity Christian Fellowship), which through all these years she still supports through prayer and financial giving. Through these experiences she developed the foundation for the passion she had for missions later in life. In the early-mid 1970's Verna began her nursing career after graduating from nursing school in Butuan City, Mindanao, Philippines. For the first ten years of her nursing career she worked at DoleFil in Polomok, at Davao City International Airport and at the Davao City Mental Hospital in Davao City, Philippines. While working as a nurse in Davao City in the late 1970s she met the love of her life and husband of 35 years Mayo David. were married on 28, 1979 in Polomolok. On 29, 1980 Verna gave birth to their one and only child, Vernon Dave, in Brokenshire Hospital in Davao City. In later years, the David family grew with the additions of her daughter-in-law, SaraJane, and granddaughter, Naomi Rose. In 1985, with hopes of a brighter future for her family Verna immigrated to work in the United States. As she started her US nursing career she worked at Manhattan Psychiatric Hospital for two years until she settled at North Shore University Hospital for 15 years mainly working in the psychiatric unit. When she left North Shore, she worked for a time as a hospice nurse before finally landing a job at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. She worked for VNS for about ten years before officially retiring as a manager in 2013. In 1991, Verna was part of a small core group that started the Filipino congregation in Queens Christian Alliance Church (QCAC) in Point, Queens. She continued to serve in various ministries and leadership roles as QCAC grew and the Filipino congregation had more than 100 members. Eventually, the Filipino congregation of QCAC became International Fellowship Church of Point (IFC) in 2008. Through the members of IFC, the churches of Christ the Living Hope, Victory Christian Fellowship and Elmhurst Bible Church were born. Tita Verns/Mama Verna and her family continued to support these new churches especially during their fledgling years through prayer, finance and involvement. Furthermore, Verna was more involved in missions work during the last ten years of her life. Periodically, she traveled to the Philippines, South East Asia and Australia and New Zealand to attend missions conferences with Mayo and her sisters. She faithfully ministered to people in remote rural areas of South Cotabato bringing financial and material support to pastors and other people in need. She and Mayo went to Madrid, Spain occasionally to support Living Word Bible Church Madrid which was planted by Missionary Pastor Rosalinda Adriano, SaraJane's mother, in conjunction with Pastor Victor del Valle and Living Word Bible Church Norway. In 2013, she fulfilled one of her dreams when she went with a group to the kingdom country of Jordan to spread the Gospel under the guise of humanitarian service to Syrian refugees. Verna was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2009. To treat the cancer she had a hysterectomy, removing the uterus and ovaries, followed by chemo and radiation therapy. In 2012 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer resulting in a cystectomy, removing the cervix and bladder and resulting for her to have a urinary drainage bag for the rest of her life. Verna also had holistic therapy as well. For the past couple of years Verna lived a healthy life which she enjoyed with her family and friends all the while continuing to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Cancer eventually spread from the pelvic area to the liver. In 2014 it was diagnosed that she had 6 months to live. A month later she was admitted to the hosptial where she was for two weeks and then she was transferred to hospice. In her last two months of life, she continually gave glory to Jesus and simultaneously showed love to those around her. It was common for visitors to leave more blessed when they left continued... |
