Obituary: Patricia Pat DeFerrari (nee Pero) of Secaucus, NJ, passed away suddenly on , 29, 2014. She was 74. A resident of Secaucus her whole life, she attended Weehawken High School and, after graduation, began a career as a hairdresser in her mothers beauty salon. Once she married and began a family, she left the business to become a full time wife and mother. It was then that she also started a life devoted to community service. She became an active member of the Clarendon School PTA, eventually becoming president, and, in the early 70s, she formed the W.O.O.D.S. committee, which was dedicated to saving Schmidts Woods from destruction. That involvement piqued her interest in local politics and, in 1976, Pat was elected to the town council; the first woman elected in the history of Secaucus. She eventually served a total of 8 years as councilwoman. But there was another side to Pat, the creative side. A lover of music and the theater, she would often act in community and school plays and was very active in church choirs, first at ICS, then in later years, at the Episcopal and Quimby churches and St. Martins church in Pompano Beach, FL. She developed a reputation as a soloist and was often asked to guest at other churches and to perform at weddings and funerals, or to sing the national anthem. It was her love of the theater that inspired her to co-found Secaucus community theater organization, the Community Arts Scholarship Theater (C.A.S.T.) in 1988. C.A.S.T. has produced many shows, plays, and musicals over the years featuring local talent to rave reviews. Additionally, it provides scholarships to Secaucus High School students wishing to study arts or the theater in college. It is still going strong today. Pat will be dearly missed by all for her loving spirit, positive outlook, fierce determination and unyielding generosity towards others. She truly loved life and loved people, and was loved in return by all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Joseph; son, David; daughter Gail Piccoli and her husband, Darin; granddaughter, Piedra Piccoli; brother Richard Pero and his wife, Eileen; and an extended family that includes many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Pat Pero. She is also survived by all the people of Secaucus, a town that she committed her life to and made it a better place to live. Visitation will be held on from 4PM to 9PM at Mack Memorial , 1245 Paterson Plank Road, Secaucus. A Memorial Service will be held 10:00am at The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 191 Flanagan Way, Secaucus, NJ 07094.
