Obituary: Edna (Hintz) Duke passed away on 3, 2016, at the Stanley R. Tippett Hospice in Needham, Mass. after a short stay at Beth Israel Hospital. She was 96 years old. A lifetime resident of Wallingford, Conn., Edna spent her later years at the Goddard House in Brookline, Mass., where she was well cared for by the wonderful staff and nearer to her family in Needham. Edna leaves her son, Jonathan; daughter-in-law, Lisa; and grandsons, Tobias and Nathaniel Duke, all of Needham; as well as more than 20 nieces and nephews. Edna is predeceased by her husband, Norman A. Duke; and by nine siblings: brothers Theodore, George, Edward, Walter, Robert, and Henry; and sisters Margaret (Hintz) Pueschel, Adeline (Hintz) Sievert, and Dorothy (Hintz) Peters. Edna was born and brought up on her parents farm in Wallingford. She proudly graduated high school and would have gone to college but instead went to work to help her family. For many years, Edna was employed by Wallace Silversmiths, working her way up to manager of the returns department. When she wed Norman, Edna left her job, as was the custom. In the many years before her son was born, Edna and Norman built their house together, around the corner from her childhood farm. She loved to cook and bake and dabbled in interior design. Edna was often featured in the local papers homemaking column for her interesting ideas and approachable but fun menus. Edna drew inspiration from the large vegetable and fruit garden she and Norman always tended. Canning much of what they grew, Edna began entering Grange fairs, regularly winning many blue ribbons for her canning and baking. Edna loved her church, St. John Lutheran Church in Meriden, Conn. Over the years, she sang in the choir, helped with the altar, organized events, and worked on the monthly newsletter and calendar. She especially loved creating Chrismons—ornaments featuring Christian symbols—and decorating the churchs Christmas tree. Before the arrival of their son, Edna and Norman worked with the churchs youth group, serving as chaperones to national youth conventions. Edna and Norman loved to travel and made trips to Florida twice each year. studied German, hosted several exchange students, and visited Germany and surrounding countries many times. She and Norman participated in the local German American club, the Meriden Turner Society, where they sang in the clubs award-winning choir and helped with its many dinners and Christmas sales. Edna was an original member of the sandwich generation: As she raised Jonathan, she also served as primary caregiver to many aging relatives, including her parents, in-laws, aunts, and uncles. She especially enjoyed her two grandsons, as she had enjoyed all her nieces and nephews growing up before them. Edna never missed a baptism or event if she could make it and, even when her memory started to fail, she rallied to smile, point, and move along with their performances or accomplishments. A Service will be held in The Lutheran Church of the Newtons, 1310 Centre St, Newton Centre, on , 9th at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation will be held in the church from 9:30 to 10:30 morning prior to the service. A Graveside service and interment will take place at Walnut Grove in Meriden CT at a day and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers donations in Ednas name may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Newtons, 1310 Centre St, Newton Centre, MA 02459 |
