Obituary: Gertrude E. DeCost (1915-2017) more than a century of life, Gertrude E. DeCost of South Dennis, MA died peacefully on 20th 2017. Born on 29, 1915, and raised in Brockton, MA, she was the eldest child of Robert Henry Deighton of Manchester, England and Myrtie Kennedy Deighton of Franklin, NH. graduating from Brockton High School in 1932 and Bridgewater State (Teachers) in 1936, Gertrude began a long teaching career, first in Brockton public school system and later in private school. While she was single, she lived at home with her mother and helped support her siblings after her father died. In 1945 Gertrude married William Arthur DeCost, and together they raised five children. With the birth of her first child, Gertrude became a full time stay at home Mom. She became secretary of the Brockton Womens Club, and St. Edwards School Guild while she continued teaching her own children a love of learning and tutoring neighborhood children. When her children grew up, Gertrude returned to teaching first grade at a local private school. In fulfillment of a lifelong dream, Gertrude and her husband relocated to the Cape where he retired and she worked for Elder Services for almost twenty years. Following the death of her husband in 1986, Gertrude remained an active, independent woman who lived in her own home in South Dennis, thanks to much help from her family, until the age of 99. Gertrude loved reading, crossword puzzles, game shows, like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, crafts, especially knitting, sewing and quilting, and walking on the beach. She kept her mind sharp by learning new things keeping in close touch with family and friends by frequent email. She was a woman of strong faith, a regular participant at St. Pius X Catholic Church. She always loved having company, and her children and grandchildren will fondly remember family visits with Gramma at the beach. Gertrude is survived by her five children, Ronald DeCost and wife Pat of Norman, OK, Linda DeCost Hoblitzell of Woodstock, GA, William A. DeCost Jr. and wife Tina of Dennis, MA, John DeCost and wife Paula of Powder Springs, GA and Debbie DeCost Lucier and husband Gary of Springfield, VA, as well as 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, one of Gertrudes favorite charities. |

Obituary: DeClemente was my father. He was born, delivered by a midwife, in an apartment on Mulberry Street in Little Italy. It was New York City, 27, 1912. Dad was named after his maternal grandfather, o Iorio, an organ maker from Gaeta (Italy) who emigrated to New York to establish the Iorio accordion company. Dads parents were Angelo and Gilda. Dad had two younger brothers. The elder of the two died in infancy. The younger brother, Joseph, lived until the late 1980s leaving many descendants. Dad himself was a victim of the deadly Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. When Dad was very young, Angelo and Gilda moved with their sons to Brooklyn. In later years Dad recounted many memories of the Brooklyn of his youth, the Civil War veterans hed seen in Veterans Day parades, the farmlands that extended from Twelfth to Eighteenth Avenues in Bensonhurst, and the image of young boys who, with little buckets and shovels in their hands, would follow the work horses in the streets, hoping to get some fertilizer for their mothers gardens. Sometime around the early 1930s, Dads parents bought a house in Brooklyn. At that time, Dad met the children of the real estate agent, a man named John Colamarino. Many years later, would become friends with the son, Mario Colamarino, and he would later fall in love with the daughter, Julia Colamarino, whom he would marry. Dad studied at Saint Johns University and later received a degree from Long Island University. His major was in Laboratory Sciences, and he became a New York State licensed pharmacist, a profession he would practice in Bensonhurst for over forty years. Dads principal hobbies were classical piano, Central American archaeology, and chess. His favorite piano pieces were composed by Chopin and Grieg, and he was an assistant at LIU in research of Inca civilization. As for his chess playing abilities, Dad told me that chess masters used to be found in New York City parks where theyd take on members of the general public. These chess masters would only get paid when theyd win a game. When theyd see Dad arrive, the unoccupied chess masters would pack up and leave. Dads last chess game was with me, played when he was well into his ninety-eighth year. At the time he was in pain from a broken hip. Nonetheless, he defeated me easily. He was a gentle man, but to him, games were serious business. During the Second World War Dad served with the US Army, first in the United States as an Italian interpreter, then in France as a pharmacist. He was in the theater of operations for the Battle of the Bulge. As Ive already suggested, Dad was a quiet, sensitive man. I suspect there was much of his wartime experience he never discussed. One evening, a couple of years before his death, he described how US soldiers in Europe would scrape their mess kits into a slops barrel before washing them. He said thered always be a line of people behind the slops barrel desperate to eat the slops. I asked him who the people were. He said French people. Then he started to weep and said I never told anybody about this before. When we were small children, on Christmas Eve, we would meet up with Uncle Joes family at Dads parents house. Late in the evening a bell would ring downstairs where wed discover Santa Claus giving out presents. It took many years before I noticed that Santa Claus and Dad were never in the same room at the same time. But one of my sisters did notice; every year she would get upset that Dad always missed Santa. Dad was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and was devastated when they moved to Los Angeles. It was many years before he was able to transfer his allegiance to the New York Yankees. In his later years, it was hard to find him without his Yankees cap, which made him a bit unpopular because he was living just outside Boston. From the mid-1960s onward, Dad and Mom made frequent pleasure trips to Europe. were also enthusiastic lovers of symphonic music and opera, attending Tanglewood, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Spoleto festival. Dad survived Moms 2003 death and is, in turn, survived by three children, Valerie, Lorraine, and . He also had five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was a kind and generous man. He wanted nothing more than to please and be agreeable to everyone. He never liked to complain. He was loved by us all. Hell be greatly missed. |
