Obituary: Dr. Lewis A. Dalburg, Jr., passed away peacefully on 29, 2014 on Cape Cod, following a period of declining health due to Parkinsons disease. Born on Feb. 22, 1930 in New Britain, Conn., he attended local schools and graduated from New Britain Sr. High School in 1947. He went on to obtain a B.S. and M.S. in biochemistry from the University of Maryland. Lou graduated from New York Medical in 1958, and did his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical in Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship at Queen Victoria Hospital, in East Grinstead, England, concentrating on tear duct and plastic surgery of the orbit. Dr. Dalburg was an assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine, and assistant clinical professor of Ophthalmology at University of Conn, Medical School. Prior to his retirement, he was senior attending Ophthalmologist and Chief of Ophthalmology at New Britain General Hospital (now Hospital of Central Conn.) and a consultant at the University of Conn. and New Britain Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Hartford , Conn. State Medical, and New England Ophthalmology Societies, American Medical Association, and the Royal Society of Medicine, in England. More than the respect of his peers, he treasured the love, devotion, and gratitude of the thousands of patients he treated over the 36 years he practiced- some the third generation. He had a gentle, calm, reassuring manner with patients young and old. An avid golfer, with an enviable low handicap-and 2 holes-in-one, he loved being a member of the Farmington Country Club for over 50 years. As President in 1982, he began the custom of the club President hitting the first ball of the New Year, a rite he brought from Scotland, golfs birthplace. He cherished the friendships formed there and the camaraderie he had with his buddies. He continued golfing after his move to Cape Cod with a new circle of pals. He also raised a prodigious vegetable garden, could rustle up a mess of clams, and caught some beautiful keepers fishing the waters of Cape Cod. He thoroughly enjoyed attending the local Cape Cod Baseball League games, and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots. He looked forward to Orleans Mens Coffee Club meetings. Dr. Dalburg is survived by his devoted wife, Joan; his son, Lewis A. Dalburg III, of Roswell, GA and wife Melissa, and Lous only grandchild, Lydia Autumn Dalburg. Lou is also survived by his sister Eleanor Nygren; her children, David Nygren (Lois); Beth Allen (Mark); Laura Rivers; and Nancy Berlandy (Tom). He also is survived by his sister Doris Peterson, of New Smyrna Beach, FL; her daughter Kirsten Spina (Chris) and Karin Bishop (Jody). He also leaves numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathy Dalburg, who died in 2012. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all close friends, medical team members, and the staff of Liberty Commons/Broadreach in Chatham who have offered their support and caring - we truly appreciate you! A celebration of his life will be held on 5, 2014 at 11am at the First Parish, Truro Congregational Church, in Truro, followed by a reception at V Rs Restaurant, Wellfleet. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation at http://support.pdf.org/.; or the Orleans Firebirds, c/o Orleans Athletic Assoc. P.O. Box 504, Orleans, MA 02653 |

Obituary: , 1 --- Waltham – Thanksgiving Day fell on the twenty-third of in 1950. Two days later an enormous snowstorm hit the Boston area and a day after that more than 300,000 Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River into North Korea and the world changed forever for Thorn and Louise Dakin of Lexington Street. Their only boy, and the apple of his mothers eye, Bobby, enlisted into the United States Army in May, 1949 and a little over a year later he found himself assigned as an infantryman with the Armys L, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division. His unit, part of a wider United Nations effort, was sent to the Chosin Reservoir area of North Korea. When the communist attack came that the balance of power shifted and thousands of young Americans would pay the ultimate price . . . including Thorn and Louises Bob. Corporal Robert Campbell Dakin was 22 when he went missing on the 12th of , 1950 even though it would be three years later, and a promotion to sergeant, before he was officially listed as killed in action; body not recovered. He was born in Waltham on 4, 1928 and was a lifelong resident before joining the service. He went to Waltham High where his tall, athletic frame helped to make him a three sport standout on the track, football and basketball teams. In addition to his mother and father sitting around that Thanksgiving table sixty-five years ago were his sisters, Ruth, Joan, Helen and Barbara and other family members who prayed for his safe return. It took a while for the telegram to arrive that delivered the terrible news. In a Waltham News Tribune article that appeared after her son was officially declared dead by the Army in 1953 Louise had this to say, I don think I can ever give up hoping for him, said Mrs. Thorn Dakin of Lexington Street, mother of Sergeant Robert C. Dakin, I just feel it. Ive written to the boys whove come back from prison camps. I saw a picture once and thought sure it was Bob. But you can be sure. Thorn died in 1977 and Louise some years later always holding out hope that word would come of Bobs safe return. Comfort will come knowing that Bobs body will finally be returned home to Waltham and he will be buried in the soil from which he left so long ago. Left to mourn his passing are his sister, Barbara Rewis of Fleming Island, Florida and several nieces, nephews and their families. Bob was also the brother of the late Ruth Cline Obett, Joan Sukey and Helen Sheridan. Family, friends and the community will honor and remember Bobs life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce , 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on , 11th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on morning, 12th in First Parish Church, 50 Church Street, Waltham where his funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake , Waltham. Michael Russo, Walthams Veterans Agent, will assist individuals and groups to line the route of travel from the church to the cemetery on morning after the service. The procession will take Sergeant Dakin for a last ride through the center of town leaving Lexington Street, onto Main Street, onto Moody Street and finally to Maple Street to the cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Waltham Boys & Girls Club, 20 Exchange Street, Waltham, MA 02451. The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war. --- Douglas MacArthur . . . and sometimes . . . their families do too. May his memory be eternal. _________________________ This is the first in a series of three articles about the life and death of Sergeant Dakin.
