Obituary: DeNicolis, Rosmunda On May 25, 2014; Rosmunda DeNicolis (Nee Ciuffi); beloved wife of Rocco F. DeNicolis for 67 years; devoted mother of Antonio, Nicoletta Panuska, Francis, Carlo and their spouses (Gail, David Panuska, Heidi, and Susan); loving grandmother of 9 grandchildren (David and Daniel Panuska; along with Jinah and Roberto; Katherine, Michael, and Alyssa; and Eric and Michelle DeNicolis) and 2 great grandchildren (David and Natalia Panuska); loving sister of 5 siblings (Giuseppe, Ida, Elide, and the late Lidia Ciuffi, along with Emma Mancini); and daughter of the late Nicola and Teresa Ciuffi. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Schimunek , Inc., 9705 Belair Road (at Forge Road) on from 6-8 pm and from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm where funeral services will be held on at 10:00 am. Entombment: Gardens of Faith . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Good Samaritan Hospital Cancer Foundation, 5601 Loch Raven Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21239. Online condolences may be made to www.schimunekfuneralhomes.com EULOGIES: 1) Antonio (Tony) DeNicolis Thank you for coming, and thanks to those who took such good care of my mother - those here, along with those at both Good Samaritan Hospital, and Gilchrist Hospice. We are gathered here today to mourn for the loss of my mom. But, we are also here to celebrate her life; a long life, a hard life, a good life. As a teenager, she performed farm work, and helped her parents raise four younger siblings. She witnessed the ravages of war, first with a German occupation, then the American liberation. the war, at age 18 she married Rocco; and, at age 20 became a mother, starting a family. At age 25, now with a second child, she moved from Italy to start a new life in the United States. While such a change is certainly difficult for all, it must have been especially so for her. At least Dad had some relatives in the States; Mom had none, all her relatives remained in Italy. So Moms focus was on taking care of her family, and assimilating to her new environment. I would like to share with you one of the methods she devised to accept this challenge. You may recall that in the movie Splash, Madison (the mermaid) learned to speak English by watching TV. What you did not know, is that this concept must have been borrowed from Mom. Being from an old fashioned family, it was suggested there was no need for her to learn English. Undeterred, while working on house chores, she would be carefully listening to the television. For the youngsters, TV was then in black & white, with rabbit ear antenna, no cable, no internet. So she was able to pick up a number of new words from soap operas, commercials, & the news. I realize this method may have actually proven successful for many other immigrant families. But watching Madison learn in this manner made me smile; a reminder of Moms experience. I may be her oldest child; but; you have my permission to refer to me as the umber one son. As that, I was the first to leave home, when I won the lottery, earning two years of army service. The first time I returned home from the army, unannounced, she seemed to know I was coming. She told me of a dream she had the previous night, preparing her for my intended surprise visit. a second similar occurrence, I decided to just let her know in advance of my return visits. It has been said that mothers have eyes in the back of their heads, so that they can see what is going on behind them. But at certain times, Mom also appeared to be able to see into the future. In addition to that, and cooking delicious Italian meals, she had many other super powers \ \ Comforting the pain from a bruise, by treating it with her gentle touch and a loving kiss \ Calming down Dad, after whatever it was, that we would have broken that day \ Resolving those inevitable sibling conflicts, in an equitable manner, and \ Performing miracles of all sorts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren What she was unable to do though, was to beat Lymphoma. She fought valiantly for 13 years. She was able to successfully stave if off on three occasions. But, ultimately it is a battle lost. I am deeply saddened by her loss; but, I am forever grateful for having her as my mother. I love you Mom. Tony 2) Nicoletta (Nikki) Panuska My mother, Rosmunda, was a compassionate and vibrant woman. She always went out of her way to help her children and grandchildren. She had an abundance of love for her family, which she shared equally, never showing partiality. Her grandchildren could never do wrong in her eyes. When David, her first grandson was young, he got upset with her, because he didn't get a cookie. So he kicked her in her shin; when his father tried to swat him on his butt, she flung him out of the way, so he wouldn't get his deserved spanking. Mom was born in 1929. She grew up in San Salvo, Italy, with her mother, father, brother, and four younger sisters, all working on a farm, as did many other families in town. The first time dad saw mom, he knew he wanted to marry her. The custom in Italy was to have an intermediary ask permission of the brides father. But dad had his own plan; he went directly to mom's father to ask for her hand in marriage. Mom and dad lived with his parents, working on the farm. had their continued... |

Online tributes may be left for the family at www.schimunekfuneralhomes.com EULOGIES: to: Rocco Francesco DeNicolis 1) Antonio (Tony) DeNicolis Dear Dad, It has been difficult to watch your health deteriorate over the past few years, as your body was slowly failing you. But I am grateful that your mind remained as sharp as ever, allowing you to clearly communicate with us to the very end. It was comforting to know that you were at peace in your final days, as you expressed gratitude for such a long and fortunate life. You honored Mom as the love of your life, and also voiced appreciation for the devotion of your children and extended family, along with the enjoyment derived from the company of your many friendships, stretching from childhood through those recently encountered in your new home at the OakCrest retirement community. There was no fear or bitterness, just a quiet readiness and willingness to be with Mom once more. As a child, I was in awe of your physical strength, determination, resilience, and resourcefulness. As I grew older, I learned to admire the uncomplicated common sense knowledge that you were able to impart. Although your formal education was limited, I respected your consistent ability to simplify my thought process in attempting to address the most complicated of situations. For example, when I complained of what I considered to be the excessive attention required in attending to the relentlessness exhibited by my young son after his arrival, you simply asked, You wanted to be called Daddy, didn you? A learned pediatrician or psychologist might have suggested my reading certain books regarding successful childrearing techniques. Instead, your approach reminded me that many responsibilities (and satisfaction) come with the distinction of being a father. During your last few months and weeks, I truly enjoyed the time we spent together. Cutting your hair brought back childhood memories of you doing the same for me. Helping my siblings care for you reminded me of how you and Mom were always there for us, not necessarily giving us what we may have wanted, but always what we needed. I may not have shown my appreciation then for your selfless efforts; but, as a father myself now, I have come to a better understanding of the many challenges you faced. Even with the benefit of more education, I can only hope to come close to the high standard you have set as a father raising a family. I am proud to say that I am your son. As your first child, I am honored to be the one that made you a father. You are my hero. I miss you terribly, but am consoled by the recognition that you are now reunited with Mom. I will love you always, Tony 2) Nicoletta (Nikki) Panuska One of eight siblings, Dad was born in San Salvo, Italy where he worked long hours on the farm. In 1954, my father migrated to Baltimore with his wife and two children in search of work in order to support his family. Dad worked as a bricklayer for several different construction companies and he always presented a strong work ethic (arriving to work every day on time, didn't matter if it was bad weather or if he was sick). This is one of the greatest qualities that he taught me. My father knew what he wanted, and wanted no less. Vegetables had to be well cooked to the point of mush; or, using his terminology, it tasted stupid. Some foods had to be bought at specific stores: bread from Shoppers, oranges from Mars, and soda from Food Lion. We never had to guess what was on dad's mind, he had no filters! Dad made it a point to treat each child's spouse and grandchild just as his own child; everyone got their equal share of tough love. He was a strict father with a big heart. He was very stern, but at the same time, wanted to help us in any way possible. We had a hill in our back yard that took away much of the usable space. We mentioned to dad that we were thinking about cutting into the hill and putting in a retaining wall. Within a few days, he came by and dug half of the hill out (which was mostly one big rock) with a pick mattock; he was in his 70's. Family was his life. He was very passionate about having his family around him, and expected visits or calls often. We made a point to visit on s; if we did not show up, we got a phone call! Dad enjoyed gardening, watching wrestling, playing cards, listening to Italian music, and watching Italian TV. My father had a green thumb; he continued... |
