Obituary: DATELINE; Portland Julie Ann Doten, age 52, passed away peacefully afternoon 15, 2015 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a short battle with Creutzfedldt-Jakob disease surrounded by her family. Julie was born on 20, 1963 in Portland the daughter of Leroy and Judith Brown Doten. She attended Portland schools graduating from Deering High School class of 1981, and graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 2011 with a Bachelors of Science in . living in Portland for 43 years, Julie and her youngest daughter, Kayleigh, moved to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to aid in relief work for hurricane Katrina victims. This included gutting and rebuilding homes, and schools, and was well-known and loved in the community for her contributions to the elderly and to Vietnam veterans. that, she and her daughter relocated to Inverness, Florida, and became very active in the Cornerstone church community. Julie moved back to her hometown of Portland, Maine to complete her nursing degree. She started her nursing career at Cedars in Portland and from there, transferred her skills to her passion of being a hospice nurse for Hospice of Southern Maine. As many know, Julie was colorful, loud, kind, loving, and supportive to all. She had a love of cooking for family and friends, and savored every memory with loved ones around the table. Julie was known for the best mango salsa, jambalaya, grapenut pudding and spicy food! Many will miss the little things that Julie brought around; always asking the boys to reach for things placed too high on the shelves, greeting everyone - longtime friend or new acquaintances- with a big smile and hug and her infections laugh. And of course her love to sit down and enjoy a nice Guinness. Julie was also known for her nurturing ways. Her sons friends calling her ma. Her childrens friends loved to be around her, sometimes more than their own families. She was a wonderful mother to all, her own children, as well as others. Like any human, she had flaws, but her humor and kindness - whether intended or not- shined through for everyone to see. Julie passed on too young, but she would want all of us to live every day to the fullest and not take anything for granted. Forgive, forget and move on to a life that is positive. Besides her parents of Westbrook, she leaves a son, Benjamin and his wife Chelsea Pinette of Bethel, 2 daughters, Christina and her partner Matt Smith of South Berwick, Kayleigh Doten of Portland, and a brother, James and his wife Catherine Doten of Windham. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service for Julie on 22, 2015 at 10AM at Brooklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Immediately following the service at the cemetery all are invited to attend a Celebration of Julies Life at 11AM at Brunos Restaurant on Allen Avenue Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Julies memory to Hospice of Southern Maine, US Route 1, Scarborough, ME. 04074.
