Obituary: Christian William DeLerno, Sr., known as Chris by everyone, died on 5 2017 at the age of 84. He died in his sleep at his home in no pain; the way most of us want to go. He was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth Jordan and Joseph DeLerno; his sister Marie Amelie DeLerno Andrieu, his brother Joseph and his beautiful wife, the love of his life, Patricia Brennan DeLerno (2001). Chris is survived by his oldest brother Manuel DeLerno and his younger sister Betty Ellen DeLerno Reinhard. Chris loved many things in life, most of them having to do with the outdoors. Fishing and hunting were his passions. Just like St. Peter, he could fish for days and catch nothing and then miraculously fill up a couple of ice chests in a morning. He enjoyed duck and rabbit hunting when he could and seemed to be impervious to the cold. He relished hunting deer and would often disappear for many weekends during the season to track them down. Chris often told many stories of these exploits and of the people in them that made life interesting for him. Chris was a jack of all trades and tried many of them through the litany of jobs in his life. He graduated high school at 16 and college at 20. Chris was in oil exploration in South America and then spent a couple of years in the Navy as a cook during the Korean Conflict; he always had a passion for food and had an intrinsic knack for cooking. He worked at Pan America Life Insurance Group and then Lakelawn Metairie. Chris started his own contracting company building homes, but lost it because of a housing freeze in the early 70s. He moved his family to Metairie into the only home he built, often stating that if he had known he would live there, he would have built a much bigger kitchen. He sold oil fittings and Shaklee vitamins. He worked for the Jefferson Parish Levee Board as a dispatcher and a policeman and retired at Children’s hospital as a security guard. He tried about everything. Chris certainly helped many people in his life, such as helping to raise his nephews, the Andrieu boys. He taught them the value of money, especially saving it up so that they didn’t have to endure his buzz cutting their hair. He loved all of his relatives on both the DeLerno and Brennan sides. Sometimes he was a bit gruff, but he truly had a great heart. The biggest love of his life was his wife Patricia, “Pat”, whom he chose from the Brennan clan. She was his everything. While she didn’t share his passion for hunting, she did fish sparingly and thoroughly enjoyed camping and hiking and spending time on the piece of property in Mississippi they bought and visited on non-hunting weekends, referred to as “the farm”. Truly she was a great match for him and gave him two sons, Chris and Kevin. He loved his boys and did all he could for them. Definitively, the greatest thing Pat shared with Chris was her love for Jesus. Their faith life exploded as they begin to immerse themselves in the Charismatic Renewal which brought them to the Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. read scripture, prayed and joined many ministries at St Edward together, especially the music ministry, in order to immerse themselves more fully in God. loved God and all those around them. When Pat died, Chris lost a big part of himself and desired even more to be with Jesus, while also praying for his sons to choose Jesus in their lives. Chris’ life will be celebrated on 9th at St Edward the Confessor Catholic Church on 4921 West Metairie Avenue, Metairie, LA., 70001. Family visitation from 10-11am and general visitation from 11am-1pm. Mass will begin at 1pm, celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond and concelebrated by Chris’ sons, Fathers Chris and Kevin DeLerno and others. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Interment will immediately follow Mass with procession to Lakelawn Metairie . Food, drink and socializing will commence at the St Edward cafeteria (to the immediate right of the church building) after Mass for those not able to journey to the interment and for all those returning from the Lakelawn Metairie interment. May God bless you and encourage you to join Him forever! |
