Obituary: Frederick (Fred) George Damas was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 20, 1917 to beloved parents, Hudla and Joseph, the ninth of their ten children. Originally called George Frederick, his name would be changed due to the abundant number of "Georges" already residing in the neighborhood. Fred did not learn of his initial moniker until the ripe old age of ninety-five while conducting an ancestry search on himself. The revelation of his original birth certificate led to only a brief shoulder shrug and his infamous chuckle, as Fred was never one to make a big deal out of, well, anything. Fred was a strong and bold man, but knew the value of being quiet and still. He was remarkably intelligent and frequently spoke of the importance of education, himself reading anything he could get his hands on, be it the morning newspaper, stock magazines, or the Encyclopedia Britannica. He was independent and vastly current. In his nineties he successfully learned to navigate an iPhone, had his own Facebook account, and traveled the world to places like Alaska and the Panama Canal. He was a proud man and never asked for assistance from others, in fact, he would down right refuse it. Fred drank only coffee and whiskey, adamantly refusing water, claiming it would only "rust your pipes. He loved woodworking, his Amateur radio (HAM radio), backgammon, and apple pie. Fred led a life of honor and integrity. A soldier in World War II, he was Missing in Action after his plane was shot down. For a month he braved the jungles of Burma with just a machete and a granola bar, eventually making his way back to his family in Ohio. Once home he was honored the Purple Heart, a combat decoration awarded for those wounded at war. Around the same time he reconnected with a waitress he had met before the war, Josephine C. Owen. married and shared forty-three great years together before Josephine died in the winter of 1990 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Fred spent twenty-six years as a widow. His strength and unwillingness to slow down would eventually pull him out of his grief, but just the mention of Josephines name or a memory of her shared would inevitably bring tears to his eyes. He missed her terribly, however always bragged he would not leave this world before he turned 100 years old. Unfortunately, shortly after his ninety-eighth birthday he lost his son and best friend, Nage L. Damas, to the same disease that had taken his wife. Less than two months later, on 17, 2015, Fred would pass away with his daughter-in-law, Kerry, at his side. His immediate family would attribute his passing to that of a father's broken heart. Fred is survived by his daughter-in-law, Kerry; his four grandchildren, Colin (Rebecca), Alya (Andy), Micaela and Tiernan who adored their Gedo (Lebanese for grandfather) to no end; and his great-grandchildren Maive Josephine and Guy Nage. Maive, continues to fondly speak of her Gedo, "The Great", and the many cinnamon rolls he bought her from Jerry's Cafe. Right before Fred died, he chuckled and muttered the words "Yeah, I am ready! Come on down and get me!" His family can only assume his two great loves, Josephine and Nage, were waiting for him on the other side. Though, his wisdom, sense of humor and kind brown eyes will be forever missed, there is comfort in knowing Fred is now in good hands. A private service and burial was held in 2015 at Mt Moriah, Newcomer, and Freeman in Kansas City, Missouri. This obituary is being printed one year from the date of Fred's passing per his request. |
