Obituary: Marjorie D. Donovan, 98, of Evansville, passed away , 1, 2017, at her home. She was born on May 27, 1919, in Elkhart, Indiana to Gertrude and Charles Dunivan. Marge married attorney Arthur Donovan in 1940 and was a dedicated homemaker and volunteer. The couple lived in Indianapolis for two years while Arthur worked as a regional attorney for the National Labor Relations Board. During World War II they lived in Atlanta while Arthur served as a labor attorney in the Army Air Corps, helping to maintain wartime production in southeastern manufacturing plants. In the latter years of the war Arthur was named to an American legal team and sent to Nuremburg, Germany, to assist in the prosecution of Nazi war criminals. Marge and the couple's two daughters, Karen and Sandra, lived in Elkhart with Marge's parents during that time. the war Marge and Arthur moved to Evansville with their daughters, where Arthur joined the law firm of Isidor Kahn. He became a partner in the firm now known as Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, where he practiced labor law until his retirement. Marge was a long-time friend, volunteer and supporter of Evansville's education, arts and service organizations. She was a member of the Evansville Museum, the Children's Museum of Evansville and the Junior League of Evansville. She sponsored several Evansville Public Education Foundation summer musicals and was a member of the USI Society for Arts and Humanities. Marge was a member of the board -- and life member -- of the University of Evansville Harlaxton Society, for which she served as president in 1987. She also was a member of the President's Club of both the University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana. Marge traveled to the Harlaxton Manor in Grantham, England many times. She also enjoyed her travels to France, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Bermuda, British Columbia, Alaska, Africa and other countries. Marge celebrated the new millennium in Nanuki Mission Hospital in Kenya, Africa. Marge joined the Junior Service League of Evansville in 1947 and served as its president in 1957-58. She was instrumental in helping the League earn acceptance into the prestigious Association of Junior Leagues of America in 1961. The Junior League honored Marge with the Helen Klamer Philp Award for her volunteerism, her impact on the Evansville community and her long-time commitment as a role model and encourager to other Junior League members. In 1962 Marge served as a charter member and the first secretary of the newly formed Evansville Museum Women's Association, now the Museum Guild. Marge took part in retro style show fundraisers for the Evansville Philharmonic Guild by loaning her vintage clothing to the program. Her favorite was the 2008 style show where she modeled her own wedding dress. Marge was an early hospice advocate in Evansville, helping to develop one of the community's first programs that followed the hospice ideology and practices she witnessed while traveling in England. Marge was named a nominee for the Vanderburgh Community Foundation's Silent Philanthropist Award in 2007. In 2009 Marge and her daughter, the late Karen Magan, were honored with the YWCA Tribute to Achievement Award for their many contributions to the Evansville community. It was the first time the YWCA gave the award jointly to a mother and daughter. Because of Marge's innumerable acts of leadership, giving and volunteerism, the City of Evansville proclaimed May 20, 2010, as Marjorie Donovan Day. Marge is survived by her son-in-law, Tom Magan of Evansville; four grandsons, Michael Magan (Amy), Mark Magan (Shannon), Jonathan Donovan (Molly), and Matthew Larkin; five great-grandchildren, Annie Magan, Charlie Magan, Robbie Magan, Lorian Donovan and Max Donovan; and long-time friend and companion Margie Wright.
