Obituary: Edward James Dowd, age 97, Rome, GA, went home to be with Jesus on , 16, 2016. Mr. Dowd was born in Brooklyn, New York, one of four children of Edward Charles and Mary Lord Dowd. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn and served in the U.S. Army and later as a navigator with Pan American Airlines during World War II, ferrying personnel and supplies from Brazil to Africa and the Middle East. During the war, he met and married Doris Mae Dellinger of Rome. returned to Rome after the war and he went to work with his father-in-law, Walter Dellinger at Dellinger Incorporated, making chenille bedspreads, and later custom carpeting which was distributed nationwide. Doris Dowd passed away in 1987 and a few years later, Mr. Dowd married Hazel Hay and they had nineteen happy years together before her death in 2008. Mr. Dowd was a selfless and devoted husband and father. He gave his children and many of his grandchildren the college education that he never had and took great pride in their accomplishments. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Rome and attended school and church services up to the time of his death. He was active in Campus Crusade and a generous supporter of many Christian ministries. He is survived by three children, Sharyn Dowd of Decatur, Georgia; Bryan Dowd of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Doris Lord Moss of Mableton, Georgia. He also has two step-children, Lucy Vick of Cincinnati, Ohio and Willard (Dub) Hay of Sonoma, California; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces, including Penney Mitchell Burton of Rome and Mary Inglis of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The family would like to thank all of the friends in Rome who provided love and support for Mr. Dowd in recent years, especially Debra Garrett and Erin Massingill of Right at , Mike Scofield and Sharman Turner, and all his friends in the O. M. Cates Class at First Baptist. A memorial service for Edward Dowd will be held at First Baptist Church of Rome on , 16, 2016. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. in the small dining room and the service will be in the chapel at 11 a.m. Instead of flowers, Mr. Dowd may be honored by contributions to First Baptist Church, 100 E 4th Ave, Rome, GA 30161. Daniels is in charge of arrangements. |

Obituary: Dorothea Dean Dow (Dodie), age 98, of Athens, passed away , 16, 2017 at St. Marys Hospice House. services will be held , 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 800 Timothy Rd., Athens. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Bernstein is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Dow was born in Hoquiam, Washington on May 3, 1919, daughter of the late Annette L. Dean and Fred T. Dean. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Arden W. Dow; her brother, Fred T. Dean Jr.; and sister-in-law, Lillian M. Dean. Dodie graduated from the University of Washington in 1941 and married Arden Dow in 1942. spent the first 25 years of their married life with Col. Dow serving in the US Army. When Col. Dow retired from the Army in 1963, he was employed by the University of Georgia and they made their home in Athens on Pinewood Circle for over 40 years. Mrs. Dow was a member of St. Stephen's Anglican Church, DAR, PEO and a former member of the Athens Road Runners and St. Marys Auxiliary. She was an avid golfer until the age of 92 and two of her great-grandsons played their first 18 holes with her. Mrs. Dow loved her family and friends and was an inspiration to her children, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren throughout her life. Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Dow Sprouse and her husband, J. Edward Sprouse, Barbara Dow Hinshaw and her husband, Jeffrey M. Hinshaw; six grandchildren, Kathleen Sprouse Doss (Edmund), Shannon Sprouse Ferguson (Ed), Barbara Sprouse Cummings (Carson), J. Ryan Hinshaw (Hadley), Anna Hinshaw Wepprich (Tyson), Sarah K. Hinshaw and 13 great-grandchildren, Coates Doss, Wirth Doss, Louise Doss, Hannah Doss, Ed Ferguson, Grace Ferguson, Pratt Ferguson, Carson Cummings, Ford Cummings, Jac Cummings, Liam Hinshaw, Owen Hinshaw and Theo Hinshaw. The family expresses deep gratitude for the excellent and loving care provided to Dodie by Shirley Meadows, Barbara Norman and Gwen Jackson at Highland Hills, and the St. Marys Hospice House staff for the last year and a half.
