Obituary: Margaret Davis, widow of Byron Scott Davis, MD. died on 8, 2015, at her home on St. Simons Island, GA. She was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, United Kingdom, on 31, 1925. Along with her parents, William and Daisy Hirst, her brother, Donald, and her sister, Dorothy, Margaret lived in several towns and villages in England. She was a member of the Church of England and was educated in church schools having attained a two-year level of college academics. When World War II broke out, Margaret and her sister were sent to Wales for safety and to attend school. However, on their own, the sisters returned home to Shenfield, Essex, on the east coast of England to be with their parents. college, Margaret was recruited to work in the Bank of England in Winchester where she met Lieutenant Davis, US Army. When Byron returned from serving in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944, the two were married at St. Thomas Parish Church in Winchester, England, on 20, 1945. Byron left for Atlanta, GA, in , 1945, to begin medical school studies at Emory University and Margaret joined him in , 1946, bringing their daughter, Patricia. The family moved to Valdosta, GA, in , 1955, where Byron had taken a position as Medical Laboratory Director at Pineview General Hospital and eventually began Doctors Laboratory. In 1961, Margaret and Byron adopted a baby boy, Edward Scott. Margaret continued her work as a school teacher at Park Avenue United Methodist Church. It was work she had begun at First Methodist Church, Decatur, GA. In addition, Margaret worked as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and was active in the English Womens Club. In the late 1960s, Margaret and Byron began to spend free weekends on St. Simons Island, GA. Margaret had attended church school district meetings at Epworth by the Sea on the island and both decided that was where they wanted to retire. moving to St. Simons, Margaret continued her work for the annual church bazaar at St. Simons United Methodist Church as she had at Park Avenue. She knitted, sewed, painted, and decopaged through many bazaar sessions. When Byron became ill in the fall of 2007, Margaret cared for him at home as long as possible. He died, May 7, 2009 and she became head of the household. Margarets life became church activities, visits from her nephew, Richard Sandford, Cambridge, England, and her beloved birds, Freddie and Eddie. In , 2013, Margaret suffered a leg injury that limited her activities. But despite her increasing physical problems, she retained her sense of humour and always enjoyed a cuppa, a correctly made cup of English tea. Margaret died at home at the age of 89, just twenty-three days short of her 90th birthday. To the last, she retained that brave spirit of that young girl who had led her sister Dorothy from the Welsh mountains back to the food rationing and the terrible air raids of war-torn London. She was the last surviving member of her generation and leaves a daughter Patricia, her son Edward, six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Internment of cremains ceremony will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, St. Simons Island on 19, 2015, at 11 am. A memorial service and reception will be held at St. Simons United Methodist Church on 19, 2015, at 2 pm. Friends of Margaret Davis and the public are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in Margaret Davis name are requested for: Hospice of the Golden Isles, St. Simons United Methodist Church, Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth by the Sea. |
