Obituary: Pauline Fredricka Chastang (Pobie) passed away , 17, 2016. Born 8, 1922, in Louisiana, to Guy and Marie Loewen, Pauline would have turned 94 in a couple of weeks. She lived a full life and was an inspiration to many. Widowed at the age of 53, she stood tall, put her hand on Gods shoulder, and walked gracefully through the rest of her life. She is survived by one twin sister, Bernadette Gartman; two daughters, Deanna (Ben) Walters and Brenda (Steve) Hamby; one son, Henry (Pat) Chastang III; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Lisa) Walters, Dana (Sidney) Price, Todd (Sharon) Hamby, Christy (Tim) Milsap, Chad (Travis) Hamby, Donnie Chastang, and Davey Chastang; eleven great-grandchildren, Ashton, Garrett, and Reese Walters; Blaine and Breanna Price; Clayton and Alexis Hamby; Brittany, Nicholas, and Stephen Milsap; Micah Chastang; and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Chastang, Jr; her brothers, William, Arthur, and Guy Loewen; a sister, Catherine Furr; and one grandson, Micah Chastang. The world would not be the same without Pauline Chastang, the matriarch of this family. She left her mark on this world, and her new life begins with death. Obituary: Maurice McKinley "Kenny" Chastain died at home , 22, 2011 at the age of 81. Kenny was born in Mt. Vernon, AL to Wren and Pearl Chastain. A resident of Mobile, he was a member of Luke 4:18 Fellowship Church. He was a Korean War Navy Veteran and a retired Air Traffic Controller who enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and being with his family. He was Past Master of Chickasaw Lodge #894 and a dual member of Spring Hill Lodge #896, and served as District Lecturer of the Alabama Grand Lodge, F&AM. It was his great honor to conduct hundreds of Masonic funeral services. Kenny was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a KYCH York Rite member, and a Shriner. He was Past Grand Governor of Alabama of theYork Rite and Past Patron of John B. Shearer Chapter #517, OES. He served as Grand Master of the Alabama Grand Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was Past Sovereign Grand Chaplain of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, IOOF. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Carrol Shirley; daughters Diane (Ken) Eelkema, Sandra Chastain, and Pamela Upchurch; sister Jane (Charles) Gullatt; grandson Dennis (Lisa) Eelkema; great granddaughters Lauren and Maggie; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on , 26, 2011 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Mobile Memorial Gardens, with the funeral services at 12:00 in the chapel. Internment will be at Valhalla . Obituary: Lamar F. Chastain Buddy died at his home on , 18, 2016 surrounded by his beloved family and several close friends. Visitation for Mr. Chastain will be held , 21, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. at Collier-Butler with funeral services to be held at Cathedral of Praise Church of God on , 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Chastain will lie-in-state from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Blount at Austin Creek Church, outside of Cleveland, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rosie Mize Chastain; parents, Roy Chastain and Vida Oden Chastain; and sister, Irene Chastain Wood. He is survived by his son, Mitchell Chastain and daughter, Angela Chastain. Three grandchildren, Jennifer Chastain, Amber Chastain and Mathew Chastain Posey. Six great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a beloved niece, whom he loved as his own, Nila Wood. The family would like to say a special thank you to Ms. Kathy Kendrick (special friend of the family) and the staff at Gadsden and Rehab as well as Hospice . Lamar was 18 years old when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He attended basic training in Miami, Florida. From there he went to Camp Barkley, Texas for combat training and then to Camp Stoneman, Virginia to prepare for the deployment to a war zone. Lamar was then sent to Newport News, Virginia where he boarded a troop transport ship bound for North Africa. He was on the transport for 21 days during which the convoy was attacked by German U-boats and several ships were sinking. But, the transport had to carry on to get out of harms way. Once in North Africa, he served with a unit fighting the Germans, which were commanded by General Rommel (Dessert Fox). When Rommels forces were defeated, Lamar was then sent to Agra, India and then to Burma where he was assigned to a unit to fight the Japanese. the war ended in 1946, Lamar was discharged from Camp Shelby, Mississippi and returned to Gadsden, Alabama. He worked at Dwight Cotton Mill and Gulf State Steel, where he later retired. Lamar served the Steelworkers Union as Zone Committee Man for several years while working at the Steel Plant. He also served as Vice President of the United Steel Workers Union Local 2176, President of the Steelworkers Legislative and Education Council of Alabama. He was Master Mason, a York Rite Mason and a Shriner. During his 73 years as a Mason, he has taught required lessons to hundreds of Masons and has twice served as worshipful Master of his Lodge. He has also served for many years as Beat Chairman for voting District 6 in the City of Gadsden and was a member of the McLaughlin Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Through the years he has been active in speaking to high school classes on what it was like to have lived during the Great Depression and about his experiences during WWII.
