Obituary: services for Myrtle Davis Crews of Jacksonville, loving and devoted wife and mother, aunt, grandmother, sister and friend, will be held at 11 a.m. on , 3 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6317 103rd Street, Jacksonville. The Rev. Jim Black will officiate the service. Mrs. Crews passed away peacefully on , 26th, at her home, surrounded by her three children. She was born 11, 1923 in Sanderson, Florida, to the late Walter and Annie Davis. She was predeceased by her loving husband Isaiah Leon Crews, Jr. in 2002. In addition to her husband Leon, she was pre-deceased by her beloved siblings Thelma Fish, Dorsey Davis, and Walter Davis, Jr. Her immediate family includes a son, Larry Crews, two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheree Crews and Darrell Coulter of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Elizabeth Crews and Gary Cox of Apopka, Florida, plus 7 grandchildren: Jennifer Fingerle (Derek) of Flint, Michigan, Jamie Stewart (Sean) of San Antonio, Texas, Daniel Crews of Jacksonville, Nathan Coulter (Aubrey) of Dover, Delaware, Matt Crews of Jacksonville, Derek Cox of Delray Beach, and Lauren Cox of Jacksonville; 12 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her siblings Cassie Green of Lake City, Mildred White of Jacksonville, and Melvin Davis (Sylvia) of Glen St. Mary. Mrs. Crews was born in a cabin in the beautiful woodlands of Sanderson, Florida, and relocated to Jacksonville upon graduation from high school, where she was honored as Salutatorian. In later years her children used to hear stories of how she had walked miles and miles in the snow to make it to the school bus stop.until one day the children were old enough to think for themselves, and they asked how it could possibly have snowed so often in Florida! Their mothers joke was finally over, but still brings laughter. Mrs. Crews wed her sweetheart Leon, also from the Sanderson area of Florida, in 1946 and they began one of the most loving, respectful marriages ever imagined. Together they built a house, and then made it into a home for their children, relatives and friends to gather in fun and fellowship. Mrs. Crews also found time to work for he railroad, Ben Equipment , and with the Federal Civil Service for the IRS and Cecil Field NAS. Most important in her outside interests was the role she played in her church, which she helped to found and then served many years as a Deacon, plus Circle Chair, Building Committee, Bulletins, Bible School, and other roles to support the churchs congregation. Each Easter morning she would cut flowers from her yard and hand these to the children at church to fill in the chicken-wire Easter cross, along with the other church members. She and Leon happily volunteered many hours together enhancing the landscaping and buildings on the church grounds. Overall, Mrs. Crews is most cherished and remembered for her positive, happy spirit, which included her love of God, family, and friends. Most afternoons were spent visiting family. She loved to host and to attend family get togethers and pot lucks. Often her pots were among the most lucky to be emptied quickly, especially her fried chicken, cherry torte, and sour cream pound cake. In more recent years, she often took homemade chicken mushroom vegetable soup to friends who were ill and homebound. Additionally, her talents in gardening, hospitality, floral design, sewing, needlepoint, ceramics, and real estate acquisition and improvements were admired and appreciated by family, friends and strangers alike. She is already missed by many. The family will welcome relatives and friends for visitation on , 2 from 5-7 p.m. at the Hardage-Giddens , 5753 Blanding Blvd. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the church Mrs. Crews helped found, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville, Florida (Phone 904.771.1596), or to Northeast Florida Community Hospice, (Phone 904.886.3883) which provided care to both Mr. and Mrs. Crews when needed. under the direction of Hardage-Giddens , Jacksonville, FL. |
