Obituary: Our precious mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Jennie S. Cotton, entered into her eternal rest at home in Orlando on , 21, 2010 at the age of 85. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925 to Anna Kvetko Stanko and John Stanko, immigrants from Czechoslovakia, who entered the United States through Ellis Island in the early 1900s. Jennies original Slovak name was Johanka Blazena, shortened by her first grade teacher to the nickname Jennie. Despite losing her Slovak name, she retained through out her life an understanding of Slovak, the language spoken in her home which she learned as a child before learning English. Jennies father was a skilled tool and dye maker who built the first spectroscope under the direction of Dr. Albert Einstein at General Electric in Cleveland. During her childhood Jennie and her family visited an aunt and uncle in Florida, who had helped to establish the small, Slovak farming community near Oviedo called Slavia, and who ran the general store there. Jennies mother died when Jennie was only 13 years old, leaving her with two older brothers and three younger sisters, one of whom came to live with the aunt and uncle in Slavia, thereby establishing a lifelong connection to Florida. During a summer visit at the age of 16, Jennie and her sister Marian were confirmed at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in the newly dedicated brick sanctuary which replaced the tiny, one room, wood chapel in which the congregation began. Jennie moved permanently to Florida in the late 1940s and became a receptionist at A. Duda & Sons. At a Dale Carnegie course in 1949, Jennie met the love of her life, Hugh M. Cotton, Jr., whom she subsequently married in 1950 at St. Lukes. Jennie was a dedicated, supportive wife and mother, who unselfishly served Hugh and their four children. She never worked for any of his business ventures, however, she played an integral role in their success. Although Jennie did not swim or enjoy being in the sun, she was a very good sport to go boating with her family around Florida and the Bahamas as the children were growing up. In the 1980s Hugh and Jennie fell in love with snow skiing, and despite being in their 50s, they became avid skiers. Together they skied around the world, including Europe, Canada and through out the western US. She loved playing bridge with her bridge club for over forty years. Jennie also established the Cotton family tradition of vacationing together every summer at New Smyrna Beach. For over 20 years her four children and nine grandchildren enjoyed Beach Week, which helped the family to form strong bonds and wonderful shared memories Jennie also enjoyed serving others and selflessly volunteered for both her community and her church. In her quiet, humble way she was a leader who helped pioneer a number of ventures. She was a founding member and past president of the Orange Pre-School PTA, a group that worked in the 1950s to establish the first kindergarten classes in Orange public schools. For over 40 years she was a teacher trainer, teacher and supporter of the Bethel Bible Series. She was a founding member of St. Lukes Board of Christian Education, which she served for over 30 years, as well as a founding member of St. Lukes World Missions Committee, which she served for over 10 years. She also supported Orphan Grain Train. Together with Hugh, Jennie was a founder of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. Over the years the two of them also contributed generously to help the homeless, hungry and the disadvantaged. Jennie was preceded into death by her husband Hugh, both of her parents, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by daughter Cindi Parker, Orlando, her husband David, daughters Jules and Jenny; son Reverend John Cotton, Nebraska City, NE, his wife Lauren, daughter Cathryn, and Cathryns son CJ; son Thomas Cotton, Orlando, his wife Kathy, children Amy, Spencer and Meghan; daughter Nancy Wendt, Round Rock, TX, husband Glen, children Emily, Eric and Sara Beth. She is also survived by sister Marian Obeda, London, ONT, Canada, her husband Reverend John Obeda; sister Ann DeLuca of Sparta, NJ. In addition, other survivors are various nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends on , 25, 6pm-8pm, y Hand Colonial , Curry Ford Road, Orlando, and also prior to the service at 9:30am at the church. Services will be held at 10am on , 26, at St. Lukes Lutheran Church. Jennie will be laid to rest in St. Lukes , exactly 69 years after she was confirmed on 26, 1941. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Lukes Lutheran School, 2021 West SR 426, Oviedo, FL, 32765. Contributions may also be made in care of St. Lukes to the Bethel Bible Series, the Lutheran Heritage Foundation and the Orphan Grain Train. Alternately contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, FL, 32714. Jennie leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith and family values, along with an outstanding record of service to the church and the community. Her memory will inspire her family for generations to come. She was truly lessed to be a blessing and will be deeply missed by all. Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.
