Obituary: Wayne H. Coloney died at his home on 11, just four days short of his 90th birthday. A natural leader and a kind man, he was loved and respected by his family and friends and by his business, social, and civic associates. In his last week he said, "How to die a happy man--BE a happy man. And I am dying a happy man." He will be sorely missed, but we do not mourn his death. We celebrate his life. Wayne Myron Herndon Coloney revelled in every minute of his 89 years including those of trial and tribulation. He cherished his wife Anne and attributed his life and successes to her love and support. His proudest achievement was their marriage of 64 years. Anne preceded him in death on 12, 2014. Born on one of the Coloney family citrus groves in Manatee , near Bradenton, Florida, he looked back fondly on his first six years when the grove house he and his family lived in got its water from a pitcher pump on the back porch, its light from kerosene lamps, its heat from fire places, and when his mother cooked on a wood burning stove. During those first years he was tended by Aunt Amy and Uncle Frank whom he loved as dearly as his parents. Then in their mid to late seventies both had been born into slavery in the mid 1850s. Aunt Amy ruled him and his younger brother, Warren, with a loving, but firm, hand and demanded obedience, honesty and courtesy. If either of the brothers even appeared to misbehave, she would say, Boy! You stop that or Ill snatch you bald headed. Wayne came from a military family with direct and lineal ancestors who fought in the French and Indian wars, with Rogers Rangers in the Revolution, The Mexican War and the Civil War during which his great grandfather on his mothers side commanded a battalion of black troops. His great grandfather on his fathers side was fatally wounded in 1864, at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, Virginia. His father saw combat in World War I and World War II, and served on active duty during the Korean War having risen from Apprentice Seaman in 1914 to Rear Admiral in 1952. During World War II, Wayne served in Europe with C, 714th Tank Battalion, 12th Armored Division rising from Private to Sergeant Tank Commander by combat attrition. As C tanks were destroyed and men were wounded and killed, the experienced men were promoted. At nineteen, he was one of the old men of the , and was commanding a tank in battle. His Battalion spearheaded General George Pattons drive to the Rhine and on to the Danube River. He returned to the States a decorated veteran with three bronze stars. the war Wayne began his stellar civil engineering career with study at Georgia Tech. He graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade average, the highest record in the history of Georgia Tech . While pursuing his studies he followed a lifelong passion and supported himself as a professional magician. At that time he was the world's youngest member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Following his graduation Wayne moved to Tallahassee and served as State Highway Engineer with the Florida State Road Department. In 1950 he married Anne Elizabeth Benedict, and their daughter Mary Adore was born in 1951. In 1954 the family moved to Guatemala, where Wayne worked in the remote jungles as a designer of the Pan American Highway . Wayne continued his engineering career in Tampa as Chief Engineer with Gibbs & Hill, then as Associate Partner with J.E. Greiner . He returned to Tallahassee as a partner in the firm of Barrett, Daffin, Bishop, and Coloney. He then established Wayne H. Coloney Consulting Engineers, which specialized in municipal engineering and eminent domain, then expanded into innovative machine design and production. The Coloney became a significant military contractor producing weapons handling systems, including an ammunition loader for the A-10 close air support aircraft. At that time the Coloney was the largest private employer in Tallahassee, with a staff of 350. Wayne later sold the manufacturing arm to the Howden Group of Scotland, and served as Director/Vice President of Howden Coloney Inc. and Deputy Chairman of Howden Airdynamics America. He retained the engineering arm as Coloney Consulting Engineers, specializing in Forensic Engineering. As president of this company he testified in court cases across the United States. He was co-founder of Coloney Von Soosten + Associates and Principal of Aurora Management Partners, Inc.; president of The Clarion Corporation; president of Sonitrol GmBh, Munich, Germany and Sonitrol (UK) Ltd., London. In 1996 he chose John T. Bell, PE as his successor at Coloney Consulting Engineers, and the company became Coloney Bell Engineering. Wayne continued to play an active part in the company as Principal Engineer until he retired at the age of 87. Wayne was widely published and held several patents. He was named Regional Small Business Person of the Year, Southeast US; Florida Small Business Person of the Year; and was a Jimmy Doolittle Fellow, Aerospace Education Foundation. He was listed in a number of biographical publications including "Who's Who in Engineering", "Who's Who in America", and "Who's Who in the World". Wayne was a mentor t hroughout his career , and his most important advice was "No deal is a good deal unless everyone wins". In spite of his many achievements, he was a very modest man and advised, "Never take yourself too seriously. The worst thing in the world is to think you're something". Wayne was a leading member of many, many organizations. He was a founding member, director, and president of Springtime Tallahassee, as well as a Krewe Chief and Brigadier General on Andrew Jackson's continued... |

Obituary: The Obituary of Anne Elizabeth Benedict Coloney who was born on 5, 1927 and died on , 12, 2014 just short of 87 years old. Anne Elizabeth Benedict Coloney, who died this past , 12, epitomized the quintessential Southern lady. Throughout her eighty seven years, her social graces, the doors that opened for her and the paths she walked were not what made her a lady. She was a lady, not because of birth or status, but because she was unfailingly kind, gracious and friendly to each and every person she saw and talked with. She liked people, and people knew that her interest in them was real and unfeigned. A truly happy person, she made others happy just to be with her. A native born Tallahasseean, Anne had deep roots in Apalachicola which had been the home of her parents, George and Beatrice Benedict, and her grandparents, Reverend George and Jennie Benedict, and Paul and Clara Nightengale, all long since dead. A cheerleader and on the May Court at Leon High School, she went on to Florida State for Women and graduated from Florida State University, a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Annes course toward a Masters Degree was changed when she married Wayne Coloney in 1950 and spent her honeymoon with him sailing along the Gulf coast out of St. Petersburg on a thirty foot sloop, just the two of them. Virtually no water front development had then begun and they could anchor in coves and bays with total privacy for days at a time where houses now occupy every inch of shoreline. Reveling in life, ever happy, with an impish smile that charmed, Anne was always ready to go or to move. Accordingly, she was instantly enchanted when Waynes work took them to Guatemala for two and a half years. Typical of her: while many others with the large engineering company that brought them there found the people unwelcoming and the living primitive, Anne made firm and fast friends with Guatemaltecans of every social strata. She and Alicia, her cook, would shop the local native markets while shunning the one big grocery store frequented by her still close and dear expatriate company friends. Alicia carried all groceries in a gigantic basket balanced on her head while Anne vigorously bargained for every item bought, emotionally when it served her purpose. Anne played the game as skillfully and theatrically as almost any Guatemaltecan, berating the vendor as a thief and scoundrel who was preying on an innocent and naïve Norte Americana, and labelling his wares as cheap and shoddy, and his fruit probably spoiled. In turn, the vendor would accuse her of stealing the bread of life from the mouths of his children and of being a Yankee thief. Shortly a bargain would be struck and the subject of this controversy would be added to Alicias basket. Anne would give the vendor a cigarette, and time being of little importance, she, Alicia, and the vendor would happily visit and gossip, having greatly enjoyed real bargaining which few gringos ever understood. Subsequently, over most of their sixty four years of marriage, Anne traveled with Wayne, almost constantly wherever his business took him throughout the United States, Central and South America, England, and Europe. She was completely at home in every major city here and abroad, flew the Concorde, both British and French, to London and Paris, and ferreted out wonderful sights and places wherever she went. In the Junior League of Tallahassee until her death, Anne had been in the very first class when the Service League of Tallahassee was formed with the objective of meeting the stringent qualifications required to become the Junior League. A Daughter of the American Revolution, also until her death, her great-great-great-great \ grandfather, Jedediah Huntington served as a General on George Washingtons staff during the American Revolution. Perhaps, though, her most endearing feature was the fact that she never ever ever assumed that she was special or important. Relaxation and recreation was had at their coast cottage on Alligator Point which first belonged to her parents and was later bought by Anne and Wayne, thus allowing it to stay in the family for some fifty eight years. Breakfast out at six in the morning, every day, was her passion and when she was at the cottage breakfast was had at the Coastal Restaurant in Panacea. All staff members of Coastal and a great number of its customers were close and dear friends. When she was in Tallahassee, her places of choice were Tallys Grille or Village Inn depending on the day of the week and, perhaps, the whims of the weather. Coffee, the crossword puzzle, and conversation, warm and friendly, with staff members and other breakfasters started her days with joy and pleasure. Since 2, 2013 Anne had lived on the second floor of the Westminster Oaks where her care, 24 hours a day, had been, literally beyond compare. One could not ask for, or find, any more attentive, warm, considerate solicitude. It was abundantly clear that Anne truly loved each and every one of her caregivers and nurses. She was blessed indeed to spend the last year of her life surrounded by such kind, loving, conscientious, caring, and competent people. Annes daughter, Mary Adore Coloney, owns a resort farm near Asheville, North Carolina, and her grandson Michael Galen Minardi, former Captain, U.S. Army, lives in Crawfordville. Her brother, George E. Benedict, III (Nancy) is in Wilmington, North Carolina. Greg Benedict (Tamera) lives in Long Beach, California with sons James and Charles Benedict, while George E. Benedict, IV is in Apex, North Carolina. Annes first cousins, Charles E. Benedict, PE, PhD, and Judy Benedict McGinnis live in Tallahassee. Mary Ann Benedict Clark (Thomas), also a first cousin makes her home in Monticello. Annes husband of 64 years, Wayne H. Coloney, continues to live at continued... |
