Obituary: Douglas Thane Romney Cody, M.D., PhD, 82, passed away at his Jacksonville home after a long illness on 17. Dr. Cody, an ENT physician and specialist in microsurgery of the ear, spent over 30 years with Mayo Clinic, rising to the position of Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology and Professor of Otolaryngology at the Mayo Medical School. In 1986 he moved from Rochester, MN to Jacksonville, FL, whereas the first Chairman for Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, he played a major role in establishing Mayos first satellite facility. Born in New Brunswick, Canada, Dr. Cody attended Dalhousie Medical School, Halifax, Nova Scotia and completed his residency at Mayo Clinic-Rochester. He attained his PhD at the University of Minnesota in 1966. During a distinguished career with Mayo, he served on the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees and was instrumental in creating Mayo Medical School. He also held notable positions such as Chairman of the American Triological Society and Board of Directors for: the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American of Surgeons, American Board of Otolaryngology, American Otological Society and the Deafness Research Foundation. His long exemplary career is highlighted with multiple honors, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngologys Award for Merit and Award for Research and Distinguished Public Service Award for the Association for Research in Otolaryngology. He served on the Board of Trustees and was named Distinguished Professor of Medical Science at Jacksonville University. Cody also was a prolific writer of articles published in medical journals and authored several books, including the internationally published Your Childs Ears, Nose and Throat. retiring in 1988, he remained active in a number of medical societies and boards, serving as Medical Director of the Deafness Research Foundation and President of the American Otological Society. Cody also was involved in the community as an elected trustee to the Municipal Service District of Ponte Vedra Beach, on the Board of Directors and Advisory Board for Vicars Landing and as a member of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. An avid golfer, Dr. Cody particularly enjoyed spending time on the greens with good friends; he was proud to shoot his age during his 80th year, witnessed by his golf-loving son-in-law. During his lifetime, he cared for many beloved pets, most recently Roxie, a rescue dog. Whether caring for pets or patients, he always had an infinite amount of love and compassion. As a loving and caring husband and father, Dr. Cody will be incredibly missed by his best friend and wife of 51 years Joanne Dae Cody (Gerow); son Douglas Thane Romney Cody, II, M.D. of Illinois; daughter Romney Cody Haas of Texas; daughter-in-law Theresa Cody; son-in-law Chris Haas, and grandchildren Hanna Cody, Thane Cody III, Natasha Cody, James Haas and William Haas, as well as his sister Suzanne Humphrey of Canada, nephew Cameron MacKeen and niece Alison MacKeen-Shapiro. He was predeceased by his parents Douglas Flewellyn Cody and Eleanore Romney Cody of New Brunswick, Canada. A great debt of gratitide to C.J. for her care and support. Obituary: Sweet, precious Baby Cody was born on 30, 2017. For nearly two months, he blessed everyone who cared for him with great joy and love. He passed back into the loving arms of Jesus on May 25, 2017. During his brief time with us, he profoundly impacted the lives of everyone who met him, especially those who cared for him on a daily basis. The lives of those who adopted him in their hearts and the lives of the nurses, doctors, therapists, and hospital staff will never be the same. That such a short life could impact so many is a powerful witness that each life has value, meaning, and purpose designed by God, our Creator. Baby Cody was extremely loved and will always be in the hearts of those who knew him and experienced the purest form of unconditional love. A memorial service will be held on , May 31, 2017, at the Baldwin-Fairchild at 994 E. Altamonte Drive, Altamonte Springs, Florida 32701 with a viewing beginning at 12:00 pm and the service following at 12:30 pm. A private interment will follow immediately after the service.
