Obituary: Edith May Cathey, born Nov. 10, 1915, died , May 11, 2010. May was born in New Zealand and remained a citizen of New Zealand all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Holcombe Cathey. May studied at the Royal of Music and the Trinity of Music in London and the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She was a long-standing member of the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Gadsden. May was a member of the Gadsden Garden Club, the Mystery Ball Club and the Gadsden Antiquarian Society. The surviving members of the family are nieces, Edith Ivey Johnson, Ginger Ivey Chambers, Atlanta, Ga., Anne Cathey Pollard, Huntsville, and Helen Cole, London, England; also nephews, Alexander M. Cathey, Huntsville, and Allen John Cathey, Huntsville. She is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews. Church service will be 11 AM, at First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden with graveside committal service to follow at Forrest . The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden. Collier-Butler and Cremation Services directing. |

Obituary: Only child of Alonzo Heath Cather and Jennie Pearl Johnson Cather. He was born in Birmingham and raised in Norwood next door to the Carraway boys. As a teenager he moved to Malaga Avenue in the Hollywood section of wood where he attended Shades Cahaba High School. He was an outstanding athlete for Coach "Piggy" Mitchell. He started at quarterback and shortstop for three years and was a third team "all state" quarterback his senior year. He attended the U of Ala and played on the freshman football team and joined Chi Phi fraternity. the war he played in the Industrial Baseball League for Bradford Mine and played 3rd base for the Anniston Rams semi pro team in 1940 where he was one of only 3 out of 23 players with no professional experience. He joined the army in early 1941 and went through B-25 pilot training before deploying to New Guinea in May 1943. He was one of the few "flying sergeants" who was allowed into pilot school and he quickly rose to the rank of Captain. During his nine months as a member of the 501st "Black Panther" squadron of the 345th Bomb Group he flew 51 combat missions and 300 combat hours . He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross with an Oak Leaf Cluster. Bill was the author of THE GUNFIGHT AT RABAUL, the definitive account of the unescorted raid by B-25 strafers of the 345th Bomb Group on the Japanese stronghold of the Southwest Pacific at Rabaul, New Britain on 18, 1943. He also spoke and wrote on the participation of wood, Alabama veterans in WWII. the war he joined A. H. Cather Publishing , the family printing business that was begun by his grandfather in Cherokee in 1860, then moved to Ashville, Al. In 1866 and then to Birmingham in 1913. He began as a Linotype operator and was a 60 year member of the ITU. He grew the company into a major printer for the Federal Government and retired in 2005. In 1942 he married Virginia Kimble Ritchie and they had two sons; William Heath Cather, Jr. (Mia) and James Patrick Cather; three grandchildren, Heath Cather (Jennifer), Robbie Cather (Rachelle) and Anna McClendon (Ryan); and six great grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Cather, Daniel and David Cather and William and Virginia McClendon, all of whom survive him. Virginia died in 1989 and in 2001 he married Dorothy Farmer for a few more wonderful years before she passed in 2004. Bill joined Trinity Methodist Church in 1938 and was on the Board of Stewards for many years. He was one of the founders of the wood Little League in the early 50's and was a 50+ year member of the wood Lions Club. He was a First Class Scout and his father was the Committee Chairman in Troop 82 at the original Canterbury Methodist Church on Hollywood Blvd. The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful nurses at Ala Hospice , Brookdale Assisted Living and Skilled unit for the attention they gave him. In place of flowers please make a donation to the Community Foundation of Birmingham, 2100 First Avenue North 35201. The service will be on , May 5th at Trinity Methodist Church on Oxmoor Road at 11:00 am preceded by a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00. Obituary: Robbie A. Papa Cates, 76 of Pell City, passed away on , 11, 2017. Mr. Cates was originally from Fairfield, Alabama. He was a long-standing member of Elliottsville Presbyterian Church before moving his membership to Lakewood Presbyterian Church in Pell City. Robbie loved his family, the lake and his church family. He worked at Barbers, Comtrac Trucking and Union State Bank. Robbie is preceded in death by his brother, Neil Gifford. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Edith Harris Cates; daughters, Ginni Williams (Pratt), Patti DeWitt (Roy) and Kelli Reaves (Darryl); brothers, Ronald Cates (Susan), Ronnie Livernois (Barbara), Ted Gifford and Harold Gifford; sister, Patricia Bennett; grandchildren, Meagan Kerlin (Scott), Amanda Grantham (David); P.J. Williams (Brooke), Alex Dewitt, Nic Dewitt, Adam Dewitt, Cale Reaves, Grayson Reaves and Reagan Reaves; and great grandchildren, Addie Kerlin, Gibson Kerlin, Scarlett Grantham and Collier Grantham. The celebration of Robbies life will be at 11am on , 15, 2017 at Southern Heritage with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends at a visitation at Southern Heritage from 6pm until 8pm evening. Obituary: service for Mrs. Nadine Denham Cates, 77, of Anniston, will be at 3pm, on 31st, at Gray Brown Service Mortuary with Rev. Andy Lambert officiating. Burial will follow at Coldwater Baptist . The family will receive friends , 30th, from 6-8pm at Gray Brown. Mrs. Cates passed away at her home. Survivors include her sisters, Lorene Carroll, Joann Hodges, Sandra Maye, and Sue Chastain (David); brother, Charlie Denham; special friend, Eugene Johnson; and her sisters by choice, Margaret Johnson and Linda Loveless; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cates is preceded in death by her husband, Bo Cates; Son Gerry Cates; Grandson Tim Cates; Parents Ross and Mary Denham; and her brothers Bud, Harold, and Jerre Denham. Pallbearers will be Barry Odell, David Odell, Richard Maye, Terry Odell, Brandon Maye, and Steven Thacker. A Baptist by faith, Mrs. Cates retired from Tape Craft after 15 years. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Heather and Southern Hospice; Brenda Hanvey, her special caretaker, and also to the friends and family that helped care for her. Mrs. Cates was a loving sister, aunt, mother, and friend. She is loved and will be greatly missed. |
