Obituary: Sarah Houston Chapman was born in Forest, Mississippi. She was the eldest daughter of Otto and Connie Houston, and had 3 sisters, Jimmie Sue, Linda, and Connie Louise. She married Dan Chapman in 1954. She and Dan moved to Bradenton, Florida in 1958, with their 18 month old daughter Vicki, where Dan took the position of Registrar at Manatee Jr. . Sarah soon joined Beta Sigma Phi, an International Womens’ friendship network, making wonderful friendships, and eventually becoming president of her chapter, and then being chosen their “Girl of the Year” due to her outstanding leadership, caring heart, and warm spirit. In 1966, Dan and Sarah moved again to settle in Central Florida, where Dan was the Registrar and Director of Admissions at UCF. Always eager to learn, Sarah enrolled in the university, earning her BA and then MA in Education, specializing in English. During this time, her second child, Houston was born. Sarah was hired to help open Lake Brantley High School in 1973, taught there for over 10 years, and then moved to help open Lake Mary High School, serving as English Department Chair for both schools. She loved teaching, and is remembered by many of her former students as a kind, caring, gifted, and motivating teacher. To her children and grandchildren, she was simply the best mother and grandmother in the world. She was an encourager, a great listener, gentle of speech, and incredibly loving. |
