Obituary: In Memory of Raymond Campis Raymond Campis, 73, of Tampa entered into rest on , 26, 2015 with his wife, Milagros Campis by his side at Tampa General Hospital. He was an inspiration to us all; he kept us laughing and hopeful even in the worst of times with his strength and perseverance. Some of his friends knew him as Chino del 104 or Campy, but most of us knew him as Superman. Ray was born on 2, 1941 in Mayaguez, PR to his parents Ramón Campiz and Antonia Padilla. He was their youngest son, the third of five children. Ray came to New York City at the age of nine with his mother and siblings and joined the Ronda family after his mother remarried to Francisco Ronda and his five children. all lived together in a two bedroom, one bath apartment on 103rd Street in Manhattan. Ray grew up in the neighborhood playing Cowboys and Indians in Central Park with his brother, Louis Ronda and their many friends. later joined a social group at the local YMCA called the Christian Gents or the Caballero Jrs. where he played: ping pong, basketball, billards, and joined a doo-wop group where he learned to harmonize. Ray would sing with his friends at a lamp post on 103rd Street as a high tenor; he loved music. He attended Chelsea Vocational High School and received a certificate as a Certified Locksmith before having to go to work to help support his family. He worked in many different factories and picked up several odd jobs putting his skills as a Jack-Of-All-Trades to use. He loved to work on cars and tinker with other mechanical equipment, hed tell people he was genius, and he was. In 1961, Ray joined the United States Army and was sent to Korea where he served our country for two years. There he reached the rank of E3, Private First Class and was able to learn the Korean language. Ray loved the time he spent overseas and carried with him an unparalleled sense of patriotism for the rest of his life. Later he joined the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority as a trackman and worked there for 18 years. He was an active member of the MTAs union and served as a mentor to many of his fellow trackmen, they were his brothers, cut from the same cloth. Many of them remained close friends for over 30 years and have become family. In 1995, Ray suffered a heart attack and underwent a quintuple heart bypass surgery. recovering from the surgery he continued to work as a trackman until moving on to light duty a few years later. In 1999, he fell ill with severe liver failure and was one of the first to receive a liver transplant from the New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. His recovery was described by the transplant team as miraculous. Ray attributed his recovery not only to the transplant team and the donor but to God and all of his family who prayed for him in the waiting room during his surgery. He was so proud that so many people loved him and that the strength of that love saved his life. In 2000, Ray moved to Tampa, Florida with his wife, Milly and his two youngest daughters: Denise and Ashley. He was proud to be a homeowner and worked on his house and lawn often, it became his new job. Anyone who came to visit was always shown every detail of what he had accomplished, and for others, he gave them the opportunity to help fix or build something with him. He was grateful to have his family and friends visit with him often, he joked it was the only time he got to eat well. Ray lived life fully, touching the lives of many, and leaving a mark on every single one of us. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a man of many talents: inventor, mechanic, artist, electrician, comedian, and engineer. He was our Superman and even though he has gone to rest, his insurmountable strength and wisdom are forever imprinted in our minds and in our hearts. His role in our lives cannot be replaced, and he will never be forgotten. We miss him deeply and take comfort in knowing we will see him again. Ray is predeceased by his parents, Ramón Campiz and Antonia Padilla; brothers, Felix and Angel Tito Campis; sister, Irma Campis Negron; stepbrother, Sammy Ronda; and beloved nephew, Orlando Negron. Ray is survived by his wife of 31 years, Milagros Milly Campis; daughters: Michelle, La-Vonne, Denise, and Ashley Campis; step-sons, Angelo and Hipolito Eric Garcia, four grandchildren, Alyssa Carambot, La-Naisia and Jaiquan White, and Tyson Simmons Jr.; sisters, Carmen and Margie Campis, step-siblings, Louis (Carmen) Ronda, Raul Ronda, Casilda (Roberto) Zengotita, Anna (Mike) Zengotita, Elia Ronda, and Noel (Sonia) de la Torre. The family would like to thank our relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers for their love, support and prayers during Rays illness. We appreciate your words of sympathy and comfort during this very difficult time. A Memorial Service will take place on , 14, 2015 from 6-9pm at the Gonzalez which is located at 7209 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. FL 33614. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family. |
