Obituary: Claire was the first born of Horace and Loretta Cote. She was born on 15, 1930. Her life was extraordinary even as a child. Claire had spinal meningitis when she was 8 years old and was in the final stages of it and almost died. She was one of three people given an experimental drug but the only one to have a Canadian priest who later was canonize as a saint pray over her. As a result a scar on her thigh from the injection and the loss of her photographic memory were her only repercussions, whereas the other two patients were left in a vegetative state. Claire is written up in the New England Medical Journal as a result. A career in nursing was to be her calling, always taking care of others. Early in her nursing career Claire joined the Air Force and she traveled the world. The Air Force stationed her in Japan, Spain, Turkey, The Phillipines, Guam, California, South Carolina and Florida. Claire visited all the countries around where she was based and even went down the Amazon. While she was in the service she was always volunteering for the dangerous job of riding in the helicopters into Vietnam that took the triage patients to hospitals in Japan. She enjoyed helping others and many times people stopped her on the street to thank her for saving their lives. No matter where she traveled she was still an integral part of her family, always remembering birthdays, attending weddings, graduations and christenings. Claire retired she continued to travel the world and to care for others. She took cruises with her mother, sister Pauline and her many friends. When her mother became sick with Alzheimer's Claire cared for her until she had to go into a home. that Claire took care of her Aunt Alice who lived to be 103 years old. Claire always enjoyed spending time with her family, whether it was visits from her cousin Elaine, going to the casinos with her sister Pauline and her cousin JP. or enjoying family holidays with her sister and her nieces and their families. She was always ready with guidance and support for any family member. Claire was not only my Aunt and my Godmother, she was my mentor who loved me unconditionally and supported me in everything I did my entire life. She loved to hear details about my work and my clients always making me feel special and important. I will cherish the time we had together and keep her in my heart always. The things I remember about my Godmother Auntie Claire was her love of traveling. As a young girl when we use to go visit her, I was in awe of all her unique treasures she had around her home. I remember I loved to sit on a small leather camel stool she had. She had great stories to go along with her treasures. Her love of jewelry was another thing. She had some of the coolest pieces I ever seen. She had quite the collection. My Aunt was one of the strongest women I have ever met. She accomplished great things in her life especially when you think of the era she loved in. She always stood up for what she believed and didn't take crap from anyone. She valued education. I remember when I told her I wasn't sure if I should go back to school for my Masters program, she told me I would not regret it. She was right. It was one of the best decisions I made. I love my job working in the medical field and I always knew she was proud of me. I could always count on her to give me advise even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear at the time. She was stern but loving when she gave you her opinion. She spoke her mind about what she believed in. I only wished I lived closer to her so my kids had the joy of hearing stories and learning from her. She will be greatly missed but I know she is at peace now. I look forward to when we will meet again. |

Obituary: Rafael E. Cota 27, 1921 - 29, 2010 He was born in Magdalena, Sonora Mexico to Ramon and Dolores Cota. He was the youngest of six children, Santiago, Socorro, Ramon, Pancho, and Manuela. In Mexico, he worked as a waiter and owned a Laundromat and Bakery. On 1945 he married Maria Amparo Durazo and they were blessed with eight children; Martha, Dora, Ralph, Laura, Elvia, Silvia, Gloria, & Irma. In 1953 he immigrated to the United States and settled in Guadalupe, Arizona. He worked in construction as a laborer for many years. Every summer he took his family to California to escape the Arizona heat. The whole family worked in the fields.they picked fruits, vegetables, peanuts.whatever was in season. At the end of the summer, they would return to Arizona. He was active in the Catholic Church and assisted in the rebuilding of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was a member of the Guadalupe Mens Club and held the office of treasurer. He lived in Guadalupe until 2002, when his wife of 57 years, Amparo, passed away. In May 2004, he married Juanita Benavidez Guffy and lived in Chandler to be close to his family. He and Juanita traveled to New York, Indiana, Texas, New Mexico, California, and especially Nevada. He accomplished all of this while making sure his family always came first in his life. He instilled good morals and values by living as an example. He stressed the importance of an education, taught them to be self sufficient and work hard to succeed. There was not a school function, baseball game, graduation, wedding, birth, christening, etc. that he did not attend. Baseball was his passion. He loved watching his grandkids baseball games and could be heard from the stands saying hit the ball boy. Many times you could find him yelling at the television, angry at the Diamondbacks manager, wishing he could have a chance to speak with him about how he was managing the team. His grandchildren could always count on him.they knew that Tata always had a bean burrito and something to drink for them whenever they stopped at his house. At Christmas time, Tio Tito would have a bag with an orange, candy, and nuts for all the kids. As a friend, you could not have a more loyal one. He enjoyed working with his plants, having garage sales, and just hanging out with his children. He continued being the glue of the Cota family and always available to help whenever he was needed. There never was a better host, and as you left his home he would say "take it easy boys and girls." Our family was blessed to have him! under the direction of Resthaven Park Mortuary & , Phoenix, AZ. |
