Obituary: Margery Elaine Carpenter, nee Peterson, was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN; at age three, she was afflicted with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Margery, transported in a wagon with a pillow and at her insistence, attended Minneapolis Public School, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota and attended the graduate School of Social Work. She worked for the Minnesota Department of Public Welfare (Consultant on Childrens Institutions), the University of Minnesota School of Social Work (Field Supervisor), and National Lutheran Council (Welfare Consultant and Director of Recruitment). Margery married Kenneth S. Carpenter in 1961, moving to Washington, DC where she worked for the Lutheran Council in the USA, volunteering at District of Columbia Youth Service Council on Mental Retardation and the Lutheran Office of Governmental Affairs. Margery was a member of the team that authored the Study on Group Facilities for Children and Youth, a joint project of Child Welfare League of America and University of Chicago. She was a charter member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers. She was recognized as a Pioneer by the Association (1991). Margery became a member of the International Council on Social Welfare when she attended the ICSW Conference in Madras, India in 1952 and for many years served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the US Committee, ICSW. Margery and her husband, who became a member soon thereafter, traveled to 18 ICSW International Conferences. Margery was honored at the 80th Anniversary Meeting (2008) in Tours, France for her exceptional contributions to ICSW. Carpenters were named as Distinguished Fellows of ICSW in 2016. She was a founding member of the Kennedy and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, a member of the Womans National Democratic Club and Alpha Omnicron Pi Sorority. The Carpenters collected and contributed works of art to the permanent collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Rehoboth Beach Art League, the Minneapolis Institutes of Art, the American Swedish Institute and the Minnesota Lutheran Social Services. Margery was a lifelong member of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis MN. In Washington, the Carpenters attended New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Carpenter has been a member since 1963. Margery Carpenter is survived by her husband, Kenneth S. Carpenter, her brother Rev. Mark Peterson (Janice), her sister-in-law Jeannette Blomgren Peterson, her nieces, Wendy Preston, Rev. Lynn Peterson, Jill Wilson (Dr. John) and Dr. Lucy Peterson Coles (Bruce), nephews Paul, Daniel and Benjamin Peterson, great nephews Eric (Chelsea) and Casey Preston (Jessica), and great niece, Ryda Elena Peterson. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Dr. Oliver H. Peterson and Hilda Huus Peterson and her brother, Dr. Oliver H. Peterson. Margerys family is entirely grateful to her caregivers, Yonette Minerva Argyle, Beverly Angella Thomas, Bing Catris, Carol Jones, Zinash Grimn and Christine McGunigale. Services will be held at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church on 19th at 12:30 p.m. and at Central Lutheran Church this spring (date to be announced).
