Obituary: Virginia C. Cameron, age 99 years and 10 months, of Fenwick Island, DE passed away on 23, 2014. She was born in Santiago, Chile in , 1914 to the late Salvador M. Barrera and the late Virginia Carrasco de Barrera, one of ten children, all of whom have pre-deceased Virginia. Virginia became a U. S. citizen in 1958. She voted in every election since. She married the late Harry A. Cameron, also of a very large family, in 1959 and they had no children. Early on, they lived in Alexandria, VA until his retirement from his career in the U. S. Army, then primarily in Lehigh Acres, FL, where they ultimately joined Faith Lutheran Church. Virginia was baptized Catholic and had been attending St. Raphael's in Lehigh Acres, but was happy to attend the Church her husband felt worked for him. Religion was very important to her and her home decor reflected that. lived in stead at the time of Hurricane Andrew and were thankful that their home was only damaged, not destroyed. That's only one of the many adventures they shared in their 37 years together. traveled often within the States and internationally, including annual trips back to Santiago. Family was so important to her that Virginia, independently, continued her Christmas time trips to her sister's in Chile until she was 93. Their time was filled with extended family stopping in to see them. A niece-in-law accompanied her to Chile when Virginia was 95. Most notable and appreciated, since then, Virginia's Chilean great-nephews, Jorge and Hugo, and her Chilean great-niece, Sandra, kept in touch with the niece-in-law about family news for Virginia for the rest of her life. Virginia spoke on the phone to her sister weekly. Through the miracle of the digital world, at ages 98 and 100, she and her sister were able to set their eyes on each other after three years. The joy was immeasurable once voice recognition occurred. Dementia had robbed them both of realizing they wouldn't look 30, or even 60, anymore! Virginia was a Nurse and had worked in hospitals in Fairfax, VA and Lehigh Acres, FL as well for Doctor's offices in Florida. She absolutely enjoyed people: everyone was a friend whether they knew it or not. She loved animals and owned a dog or a cat almost always. In 2007, Virginia decided to move into the independent living section of Gull Creek Assisted Living in Berlin, MD, close to a niece-in-law and her husband, Elsie and Bill. Virginia's family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful and loving care Virginia and her (late) cat, Petey, enjoyed at Gull Creek. In 2010, her needs changed and Virginia, Petey too, moved to Brandywine Senior Living of Fenwick Island, where she was nicknamed "Mommasita" by all who worked there in the Reflections arena for memory care. Virginia's family appreciates the enormity of the dedication it takes to work in memory care arenas and thanks everyone from deep within our hearts at Brandywine Senior Living at Fenwick Island in Selbyville, DE for making Virginia feel like she was living within a large family full of love during her four plus years there, most especially for the increased personal care as the Alzheimer's changes progressed. It is truly because of Hospice suggestions and your employees that we enjoyed her and she was comfortable, active and content for these extra years. She truly appreciated her Angels in the black shirts and the red shirts. Alzheimer's had not robbed Virginia of most of her lifelong pleasures until her last several months. She lived independently and drove until she was 93. She and her big cat, Petey, a few years back, were pictured in the Berlin, MD local newspapers as she held him in her arms for the Blessing of the Animals. She loved it when people invited her over to enjoy their pets. Painting and ceramics, trimming the rose bushes, her love of children and animals, attending Cameron family reunions, drives to see the wonders of nature, visits and meals out with friends/family, the weekly music celebrations and other social activities at the facilities and her Religious activities, through St. John Nuemann while at Gull Creek and St. Luke's while at Brandywine, kept her busy, safe and content. Ever the perfect hostess, she worked to make you comfortable and feel welcomed. Virginia, until 98, still sent and received Christmas cards to and from lifelong friends and neighbors, as well as family. Her family appreciates those who kept those connections with Virginia and realizes that communication with those with Alzheimer's is challenging. She is survived by two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law and so many nephews and nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, and great-great nephews and great-great nieces in the States and in Chile, that we'd surely miss a few names if we tried to list them. We shall treasure our wonderful times with Virginia. The family sincerely appreciates the employees of Vitas Hospice of Delaware. Virginia lived an additional two years because of their caring attention and suggestions. We also can't say enough wonderful things about DELAWARE HOSPICE and their team of employees and volunteers who helped Virginia and us through what was to come. Because of their adjustments and suggestions for Virginia when she was in their in , we instead got to enjoy her until the end of . Virginia returned to the Delaware Hospice in Milford, DE and they provided for the kind of peaceful passing for Virginia for which we all wish. Virginia will join her husband at Lee Memorial Park , 12777 State Road 82 Ft. Myers, FL 33913 on , 8, 2014 following a service inside the Hodges at Lee Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. There will be no visitation prior to the service. We appreciate the considerate, kind and professional coordination of efforts among the involved Dignity Memorial related funeral homes: Robert continued... |
