Obituary: Seeing is believing. For many, those words simply represent a motto. But for Allen Purnell Carpenter, it summarized in every way who he was. He was modest, quiet and observant, taking in everything around him and always thinking before acting. He was a realist, someone who was efficient and practical in everything he did. He was a friendly person who truly cared about those around him.

He was the son of Purnell and Emma Carpenter. Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, he was brought up to be tolerant and trustworthy. As a child, he learned to be conscientious, responsible and punctual. These were all traits that he would carry with him throughout his life.

As a young boy, Allen was always aware of how others around him felt and this quality served him well. With a deep capacity to tolerate the feelings of others, Allen was generally able to avoid conflicts. It seemed as if Allen was the family member who was always working to keep stress at bay. Preferring a quiet environment where he could concentrate, Allen also had the ability to relate well with his family and friends. Allen was raised one of nine kids. He had his borthers Fred, Arnold, Leon, Lewis, Paul and sisters Margie, Rowena, and Charlene. Allen was constantly involved in activities with his family. Allen and his siblings had the typical rivalries while growing up but they deeply cared for each other and shared many life experiences over the years.

Growing up, Allen was one of those children who didn need to be in the center of a whirlwind of activity. He was content to entertain himself. Allen was never pushy when it came to games and other activities, but rather, he was able to enjoy the pure fun these could bring. In just about everything he did as a child, Allen was intent on pleasing both the adults and the other children around him. Allen took part in a number of activities as a child. He took part in baseball.

Allen enjoyed learning. He always had a great memory and was particularly skilled at retaining factual information. Allen was generally quiet in class, learning best through observation. He often showed great concentration and was competent at completing the tasks at hand. Good with details, Allen was painstaking and accurate in his efforts. All of these talents culminated in a successful high school career. He graduated from Carl Hayden in 1957. Allen enjoyed some courses more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers.

Most folks would say that Allen was shy until they got to know him. Those who were privileged to know him well learned that he was a solid, good friend. Allen was reluctant to generalize about people, and he based his friendships on his personal experiences. Because of this, Allen best trusted those people that he truly knew. He was concerned about how those around him felt, and he always seemed to uncover the positive side of people. He could relate to others and had the ability to see their point of view, to walk a mile in their shoes, as the saying goes. The friends that he made, Allen kept. While growing up, some of his best friends were Fields, Schnepp, Wilson, Hatfields and Waddle. Later in life, he kept his friends throughout his life.

Love can be defined but must be experienced. That was so true for Allen. On 5, 1963 Allen married Connie Virginia Fields at the Phoenix Wedding Chapel of Phoenix, Arizona. He was totally committed to Connie and maintained traditional ideals about marriage. It was as if Allen naturally sensed his spouses needs, and accepted those feelings unconditionally. Although Allen disliked conflict, he did not take flight from discord, but rather sought to preserve harmony even during the most trying times.

Allen was a good father to his children. He had old fashioned parental values and could handle typical family conflicts in a fair and calm manner. Because he trusted emotions, Allen was reluctant to force issues and used gentle persuasion to resolve situations. In this way he seemed to radiate an aura of warmth and caring to those around him, always thinking before acting. In addition, Allen was a master planner. No matter how hectic life around him might be, he seemed to know and track everyones schedule. Allen was blessed with 2 Boys, Rory Carpenter and Dee Carpenter. were also blessed with 3, Justin, Stephen and Tricia.

If you gave Allen a deadline, he would meet it. At work, Allen was always on task. Without hesitation, Allen could adhere to any assignment and see it through to its completion. His primary occupation was a Mechanic. He was employed for United Metro - Tanner Brothers for 25 years.

Allen liked to experience things first hand, in addition to simply learning about them. This quality influenced Allens choice of leisure time activities. A methodical and patient worker, Allen preferred to set aside uninterrupted time to work on his hobbies. His favorite pursuits were Hunting and Fishing.

While thorough and measured in his approach to things, Allen often liked to physically do things rather than just think about them. He was like that with sports. In high school, Allen played Baseball. Recreational sports included Hunting and Fishing. He also enjoyed the statistical data and the facts behind the sports. In this way, he was something of a sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite teams whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list wereASU Football, Phoenix Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Nascar.

Anyone who traveled or went on vacation with Allen had smooth sailing. It was often taken for granted that he was the trip planner. He would start early and examine all of the possibilities, selecting the best and most effective options. Favorite vacations always included Hunting and Fishing.

Allen had German Shorthair by the name of Megan, who continued...

Obituary: Alice Joan Sanders Carpenter died on 28, 2014, at the age of 82. She was most recently a resident of Mesa, Ariz., and was a long-time resident of Springville, Utah. She died in Mesa from complications related to her age.

Alice was born 13, 1932, in Globe, Ariz., the only daughter of Frank Robert Sanders and Beatrice Lewis Sanders. She spent her early childhood in Globe, where she particularly enjoyed riding her horses. As a girl she developed a love of animals that continued throughout her life. In addition to her brother, Frank Robert Sanders Jr., she spent much of her time in Globe with her cousin, C.D. Bill Tanner. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Grants Pass, Ore., where she graduated from high school and went on to attend Oregon State University in Corvallis, receiving a degree in Animal Husbandry. She was married to Harry Alan Carpenter on Sept. 17, 1952, in Rogue River, Ore., and had five children before divorcing in 1966.

She later earned a teaching certificate and began teaching Fifth Grade at Lucerne Valley Elementary School in Lucerne Valley, Calif. In 1969, she moved to Springville with her family and her parents. She taught Seventh Grade reading and English for 26 years at Springville Middle School. In 1994, she retired from teaching and moved back to her home state of Arizona, residing in Mesa.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Alice served in a variety of callings, but her favorite was always that of a Visiting Teacher. She also served for many years in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, both in Utah and in Arizona. She was a dedicated daughter, mother and grandmother, caring for both her children and her mother for many years and regularly visiting her grandchildren until illness and age prevented her from traveling. She was also known for caring for her neighbors and friends, always being ready with a listening ear and loving heart.

Alice is survived by her brother, Frank Robert Sanders Jr., of Suttons Bay, Mich. Also surviving are her five children: Donna Rae Carpenter Stephenson, Mesa; Linda Kay Carpenter (Tom) Boatman, Gilbert, Ariz.; Michael Alan Carpenter, Mountain View, Calif.; Mark James (Cindy) Carpenter, Sandy, Utah; and Frank Alvin Carpenter, Eagle Mountain, Utah; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, with one more to be born soon.

A viewing will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 1315 S. 24th Street in Mesa, Ariz., on Aug. 8 from 6-8 p.m. with a memorial service at the same location on Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial in the Mesa City . In lieu of flowers, Alice would be honored by donations to the Perpetual Education or General Missionary funds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. entrusted to A.L.
