Obituary: Bend, Oregon Jane had a kind word for everyone she met and a natural gift for making people feel cared for and comfortable. Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, she was a rare mixture of elegance and grit. When she met and fell in love with Frank Cammack at the University of Idaho, it was a true story of opposites attracting. As Frank put it, “Janie had always walked on a sidewalk and I’d never seen one.” Shortly after they married in 1959, Frank took a job at a rustic logging camp on the Salmon River in the Idaho wilderness. Jane bravely followed, one of only two women in the camp. She did her best to settle into camp until she discovered coyotes one day at the doorstep of their small cabin. “There are wolves on the porch!” she told Frank in a panic, and promptly informed him she’d be a weekend visitor to camp instead. Their adventures continued when they moved to the timber town of Bend, Oregon in 1962. Frank and Jane became part of a close circle of lifelong friends who worked for the Brooks-Scanlon mill. Her style and elegance brought welcome sophistication to the rough high desert city. Warm and caring, she loved to gather family and friends for small parties full of laughter and fun. Those rituals of connection wove together the growing community and brought her great joy throughout her life. Jane’s greatest love was for her family and her two daughters, Kelli and Karen. She adored and doted on her girls, and always encouraged them to follow their passions and dreams. From the time they left home for college and careers until their adulthood, she spoke to them on the phone daily and delighted in their stories. She was their best audience and their biggest fan. An only child, Jane also cherished the sisterhood she developed with her closest women friends. She was a member of both the P.E.O. Sisterhood - Chapter DE, and the Bend Study Club for many decades. She believed strongly in women’s education and enjoyed delving into subjects including history, literature and art. She also found happiness in simple things. She loved hummingbirds, the color blue and watching wildlife wander through the forest behind her Bend home. Jane passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family. She is survived by her husband, Frank, and her daughters Kelli and Karen. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Helen Bonham. Her kindness, grace and warmth will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation for the hospice doctors and nurses at Partners in who were so kind to Jane and her family. At Jane’s request, a garden party will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to PEO Sisterhood- Chapter DE, 2072 NW Glassow, Bend, OR 97703, or Partners in , 2075 NE Wyatt Ct., Bend OR 97701.
