Obituary: Peter Steve Carambelas, 88, of Niantic, passed away peacefully on 5, 2015 at Bayview in Waterford, CT. He was surrounded by loved ones as he passed, with his sister, Bessie, by his side. While we will miss him dearly, the heavens now have welcomed one of the kindest, gentlest souls imaginable into Gods open arms. Peter was born on 23, 1927 in Manchester, CT to Steve (Mike) and Mary (Stevens) Carambelas, as their first child and only son. He grew up in Manchester, CT, surrounded by his close-knit Greek family which included his godfather, Gus Ambulos, and his first cousins, the Ambuloses, whom he remained close to throughout all the years. He is survived by his only sibling, Bessie C. Mountzoures, with whom he a special bond and an especially close and loving relationship. He is also survived and will be missed by his brother-in-law, William Mountzoures, who compassionately helped Bessie care for him in his last years. Maria Gray, his loving companion, predeceased him in 2008. shared a long and happy life together, enjoying many common interests and activities including active membership in The German Shepherd Club of Eastern CT, bowling in a league with close friends, gardening, drop in visits with the extended family, and daily walks at Rocky Neck State Park. He was very close to Marias daughter, Diana Thorstenson, and her son, James, who lovingly referred to Peter as Opa, grandfather in German. The entire family will fondly remember the welcoming and fun times at their home on Whitney Lane, East Lyme, especially the open invitations to their pool on hot summer days, and the special strawberry shortcake dessert parties they hosted. Although Peter never had children, he loved his sisters children as if they were his own, and played instrumental roles in their lives by his example of kindness and caring. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his two nieces, Marcie Mountzoures Cunningham (Daniel) and Sophia Mountzoures Brubaker (Bill), both of Niantic, and his nephew, Louis William Mountzoures (Jean) of Wellesley, Mass. He is also survived by his great nieces and nephews, who will love and remember him always: Christine Shauble, Kathryn, Elena, and Thomas Brubaker; Leah OConnor, Robert, Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Cunningham; and Megan, William and Zachary Mountzoures. He is also survived by three great-great nephews, Ivan, Grant and Jocean. He was honored to be godfather to his cousin, Charles Ambulos, and much later in life to his great nephew, Robert Cunningham. While attending Manchester (CT) High School, Peter left school to proudly enlist in the United States Navy during World War II, and served on the U.S. naval destroyer USS John J. Powers. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Manchester to graduate from Manchester High School, Class of 1948. He then attended Howell Cheney Technical School, where he learned his lifes trade of finish carpentry, graduating in 1950. An accomplished carpenter, he built three family homes, including their cottage at Giants Neck Beach, which he built for the familys great enjoyment at the young age of 21. In 1952, the Carambelas family relocated permanently to Niantic. During the 1950s and 60s Peter assisted at the family restaurant businesses in Niantic, the Ocean View Dairy Bar on Main Street, and later Mikes Clam Bar. As a carpenter, Peter went to work for Herbie Reed, a well-known and respected custom carpentry company in the Lyme/Old Lyme/Niantic area. As a custom finish woodworking specialist, he worked on some of the nicest homes in the region. His exceptional work was executed with great attention to detail, and homeowners frequently requested that he personally work on their homes. Peter was a Realtor, and worked as a partner with his brother-in-law, William Mountzoures, for many years in the realty business in Niantic. also formed a residential construction company, Caramount Builders, serving the local area. Later, he worked as a union carpenter, working at Millstone Nuclear Power Plant. Since youth, Peters love of all animals, especially dogs, was apparent, and he joyfully helped his family members find and care for many wonderful dogs throughout the years. Animals sensed his love and kindness, and the feeling was always mutual. This love for animals shaped Peters life. His breed was the German Shepherd. Peter was a long-standing member and president of the Eastern Connecticut German Shepherd Club and served as steward for many of their AKC breed shows. He was extremely proud to found his own kennel, Caramar Shepherds where he bred and showed several of his own dogs. One of the culminating achievements of his work with shepherds was the participation of one of his dogs in the 1971 Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden, where his shepherd took third place. His many trophies, ribbons, and awards are testament to his dedication to the German Shepherd Dog Breed, and the importance he placed on breeding the complete shepherd, including temperament and conformation. His dogs were loyal, kind, smart, and beautiful. were very special to him, and he loved them all equally, champions or not. It was very painful for him when he lost them, but he always handled it with grace and sad acceptance, realizing it was part of life. We know that his beloved dogs have greeted him with great joy now that he joins them in heaven. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Bayview for their compassionate care of Peter in his last years, and to Hospice Masonicare and their volunteers, especially Georgia Lee Littlefield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peters memory may be sent to his church, St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead Street, New London, CT 06320. Peter was a humble, gentle man who enjoyed the important things in life, and loved his family. We will remember him as one who never raised his voice, never had a bad thing to say about anyone, and never hurt a soul. He opened continued... |
