Obituary: My grandpa passed away, this morning. He was my last surviving grandparent, and one whom I greatly admired. He was the most powerful and most welcome presence in any room; a storyteller and jokester. He laughed with a contagious joy, and welcomed every child into his fold as though they were indeed his grandchild. But only a few can truly claim that privilege.

Around the time I started second grade, and in possession of every boy's dream - an angelic voice, the church choir leader saw fit to recruit me to sing a solo in an upcoming performance. I eagerly accepted his proposal and practiced often. I really enjoyed singing...right up until the performance. Indeed, rather than bask in the glow of a spotlight, I sat in the corner of a side classroom and shook with fear. NO WAY was I going out on that stage! The choir director was beside himself - understandably so, now that I have the benefit of age and perspective. I "had to perform," he said, thinking he could force me out in front of the waiting audience. My grandpa, a local police officer and deacon of the church, had different ideas. He stormed into the room and told that choir director in no uncertain terms if his grandson didn't choose to sing then I didn't have to sing. If ever I witnessed a man stare down another into submission it was in that moment. No one in our small town messed with my grandpa, least of whom a pithy choir director. Someone else sang my solo that night - someone else enjoyed the spotlight - but no one had a more memorable evening than the one I experienced.

Similar memories are endless. Grandpa loved to parade my brother and I around town; taking us with him to home and business alike. He savored the opportunity to share a story about our misadventures: losing a flip-flop in the river, a bee chasing my mom from an outhouse, or the "tough guy" coat my brother wore with pride. He was the first photographer I ever knew; a carpenter under whom I served as apprentice; and a servant of his community.

My grandpa was a role model and my hero: He had forearms as thick as some men's thighs, as all super heroes do, of course, and he possessed a grip equal to the small vise he bolted at the edge of his workbench - which was forever covered in sawdust. He was dangerous as a wild beast and gentle as a gummy bear. He took my brother and I on many adventures: mountains, highways, and late nights. What more could a grandson want?

He rescued my mom and us from the dark parking lot when our car battery died. He stood by his wife until the day she died. And he told me he loved me several times before today, when he also died.

Now he journeys with our Heavenly Father. Yes, the Lord rejoices. I envision a choir gathers and a solo is sung in grandpa's honor; sung without fear; for how long has he waited to hear that perfect angelic voice? Yet, it is not the voice of his grandson. The angel can only hope to be so honored. No, I am not there with you, grandpa, but rest assured when at last I arrive, I will sing. You will hear my voice. I will sing of my heritage. Of what a privilege it was to know you.

May I live with such fervor. May you live...far beyond heaven's gates. In deepest glory, forever. Amen and Selah.
