Obituary: Harold Edward Cone passed from this life to the next on 20, 2015, in Shoreline, Washington, at the age of 84 due to complications of Alzheimers Disease. Harold possessed a wise spirit, a gentle heart and a quirky sense of humor. Born 4, 1930, in Argonia, Kansas, to Caroline Mae Harper and Walter us Cone, Harold was the second of three children, including his older sister Hazel Ione and younger sister Margaret Ann. Harold is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Muriel Christina (Brouws) Cone; his parents; his older sister, Hazel Ione (Birkholz) Petersen; his nephew Robert Dean Birkholz; and many generations of Cones and Harpers before him. Surviving him is his daughter Carrie Marie Cone (husband David E. Lange) of Shoreline, Washington; his sister Margaret Ann (Cone) Hendershot of Lakin, Kansas; his half sister Rosemary Smithhisler of Clovis, New Mexico; his nieces Carolyn Kay (Birkholz) OHara (husband John) of Clive, Iowa, and Debra Ann (Birkholz) Hall (husband Lary) of Hutchinson, Kansas; and his nephews Donald G. Birkholz of Ankeny, Iowa, and John S. Petersen (wife Kristi) of Jones, Oklahoma; as well as cousins and great and great-great nieces and nephews. Also surviving Harold on his wifes side are his niece Linda Susan (Brouws) Conklin of the San Francisco Bay area and nephew Jeffrey T. Brouws (wife Wendy Burton) of upstate New York and their children and grandchildren. Harold graduated from Pond Creek High School, Oklahoma, in 1949, followed by 2 years at the Junior in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, as a Pre-Medicine major. He was an artist, thespian and musician in his younger years, singing and playing the trumpet, bass horn, and piano. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951, serving in the Korean War for 3 years, first as a paratrooper and later in the Counter Intelligence Corps, working with Korean refugees. Harold married Muriel Babe Christine Christina Brouws on 18, 1954, in San Francisco, California, taking his bride to Munich, Germany, a year or two later for an extended honeymoon, where he continued his work with refugees as a civilian for the U.S. Army. His love of music, theater and art continued throughout his life, but he found that the responsibility of family and work took priority. had one child, Carrie Marie Cone, on 16, 1959, who married David E. Lange on Harold and Muriels 45th wedding anniversary. returned to the United States in the late 1950s, choosing to make their home in the greater Seattle area, living in Richmond Beach, Magnolia, Bellevue, Everett, and Lake Sawyer (some more than once). There he returned to work for The Boeing , having worked for them in Wichita, Kansas, prior to his military service. Harold, Hal to his friends and colleagues, had a rewarding career as a parts buyer for Boeing (as well as a Boeing Clown for a few years). In the early 1960s, he and his family transferred to Huntsville, AL, and New Orleans, LA, so he could work on the Saturn V program. In the fall of 1964, after losing their home to a hurricane (Hilda) and tornado, Hal and his family gladly returned to the Pacific Northwest, where Hal worked on the 747 airplane program from its inception to its commercial sales. Hal later bought parts and systems for the 757 and 767 airplanes, retiring in 1995 after 45 years of loyal service. No matter where he was, he could look up and identify any plane in the sky. Harold enjoyed every aspect of life, finding the good in all things. He especially loved the great outdoors, the mountains, the ocean, gardening, reading, music and Gary Larson comics. He spent his adult life devoted to Christian and Freemasonry ideals and was a 32nd degree Mason and lifetime member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Lodge #241. Having been raised in the Methodist church and later confirmed in 1964 with his wife in the Episcopal Church, Hal and his family attended a number of churches throughout his lifetime. No matter where he was, he never wavered in his belief in a higher power, immortality and ones responsibility for others. A few years after retiring, Hal was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease. As the disease progressed, he continued to celebrate what he still could and made accommodations for what he had lost. He faced the disease with the same grace and dignity with which he had always faced life. Throughout his final years, a kernel of his true nature continued to shine through, reflected in his warm smile, his joyful whistling, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and the loving and playful way he interacted with his fellow human beings. A Memorial Service will be held 7, 2015, at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 21405 - 82nd Place West, Edmonds, Washington, 98026, at 2:00pm. Memorial gifts can be made to the Seattles Union Gospel Mission (206-723-1076, www.ugm.org), Rite of Washington Childhood Speech & Language Program (1-888-543-8255, www.ritecarewa.org), or the Alzheimers Assn of Western Washington (1-800-272-3900, www.alz.org). Harold will be entombed with his wife at Acacia Memorial Park, Seattle, Washington, on that same day. He was a generous man, giving of himself and his resources to others. His joyful smile reflected his gentle and giving heart. |
