Obituary: I-Hsin Chang passed away on 6 in Shoreline at the age of 97. He was born in 1916 in a rural area near Nanjing, China. In his youth he had only a few years of formal schooling. He worked as a health inspector and studied at night to further his education. In 1943 he entered Guizhou University as a civil engineering student. He finished his studies after the Sino-Japanese War, and worked as an engineer for the Nationalist government. Following the 1949 revolution he moved to Taiwan to continue his career. He attended U.C. Berkeley engineering school for a year, and later took a position with Taiwans Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction. There he managed multi-million-dollar projects to build and improve rural water, sanitary, and drainage systems. He retired as the Commissions Chief Engineer in 1979. Through his public health work I-Hsin met a nurse, Hwa-Chin (Lola) La. married and raised a family in Taiwan, and later emigrated to the United States. are longtime residents of Seattles Lake City area. Early in his retirement I-Hsin ran a small grocery store on Ravenna Avenue. He enjoyed gardening, and maintained a productive backyard vegetable patch for many years. He attended childcare classes and lovingly helped to raise and care for his grandchildren. I-Hsin is remembered by his family and friends as quiet and disciplined, though his compassion often shone through. He considered his Rural Reconstruction work a duty to his country, and was known to refuse gifts from grateful contractors. His daughters recall his long talks on the virtues of persistence and hard work. Yet he could be moved to tears by a dramatic movie or book. His personal journey from a peasant background during Chinas civil war to a position of responsibility and service was an inspiration to his family. Survivors include I-Hsins wife, Hwa-Chin; his daughters and their spouses Alice Chang and Thatch Harvey (Lake Forest Park), Sharan Chang and Bill Chen (Houston), Kathleen Chang and Mike Pudden (Seattle), and Ya-Pei Chang and Ray Holden (Seattle); and nine grandchildren: Allen, Michael, Megan, Evan, Alex, Derek, Stephanie, Rachel, and Casie. A viewing is planned for , 15, 2013 at Acacia Memorial Park and in Seattle, followed by burial at Holyrood Catholic in Shoreline. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of Evans Adult Family , where I-Hsin was a resident for the last two years. |

Obituary: Feng-Hsien Grandma Rose Chang died 12, 2011 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 88, according to the Chinese Calendar. She was born 5, 1924 in Shanghai to Lu-Tseng Liang and Wen-Ying Tang. She grew up and studied in Shanghai receiving her Registered Degree at twenty two years of age. She began her nursing career at several different hospitals in Shanghai. On 3, 1949 she married Hau Chuen Chang in Taipei, Taiwan. To their marriage 3 children were born; Joanna (Luther) Tai, Alicia (Joe) Tseng and David (Mei Hwa) Chang and 6 grandchildren. In 1957 she began working at the Taiwan Power as a registered nurse retiring at age 60, she and her husband then resided in Tainan. She then started her second career as a special nurse in several hospitals and helped many patients. her husband passed away, she moved to Seattle in 1995. She attended Central Community and studied English. In a very short time she was able to live very independently of her children. In the last ten years she volunteered every day for The Grand Parent Program at B.F. Day Elementary of the Seattle School District in the reading classes for the first to the fifth grade. She received numerous certificates of appreciation from the school district for her dedication and volunteer help. At the age of 82 she was interviewed by The North Seattle Herald-Outlook for volunteer work and doing so much for the children. She was affectionately known as Grandma Rose by the students and staff at B.F. Day elementary. Because of her bilingual skills she helped many children to improve their reading scores. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one sister. All her life she worked very hard and always helped others around her. |
