Obituary: Leonard Harwood Champion was born 17, 1919 in Portland, Oregon and lived on the same road since he was three months old, passing away at home on 6th, 2015. Dad was a graduate of Yelm High School and Corvallis School of Aviation, having earning his pilot license; he then worked for Boeing in the Red Barn. He then tried to answer the call of duty by enlisting in all branches of the military with denial due to his eye sight. Shortly after, he was drafted by the Army, who assumed that he could work on aircraft engines since he had worked at Boeing. At Fort Knox, was given a huge manual on tank engines and instructed to learn it in two days so he could teach his class, which he did. Another reason the Army picked him for the instructor positions was because of his willingness to work with all races and nationalities. Dad was shipped to England on a cattle ship that was subsequently sent to France where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. While in Belgium, he worked with an all Belgium crew that he enjoyed and admired. He also participated in the liberation of the concentration camp at Buchenwald where he took pictures of the atrocity so that no one would forget. All of this occurred with no basic training other than firing one fifty caliber round at Fort Lewis. the war, Dad married Marilyn Jean Pettit after dating for three weeks and they remained married for 56 years until moms passing in 2008. Dad and Mom built by hand the family home over a period of three years and when they were done there was no mortgage. Dad worked outside the familys 240 acre farm as an Operating Engineer and was a proud member of Local 612. He was able to fix anything with scraps and parts that were saved. Nothing was wasted, everything was kept. This was due to coming up in the hard times of the great depression. Dad took it upon himself to not only do what needed to be done, but also to teach his children in the process. This instilled a stellar work ethic in his children and the generations that followed. retirement Dad decided to stay busy. He built a shop and taught himself woodworking. He built everything from toys to furniture, which his children and grandchildren have in their homes and treasure. Dad loved animals. He enjoyed all the ducks bringing their babies up to the feed in the spring. He also fed the raccoons, deer, elk, squirrels, a multitude of birds. He also fed his great-grandsons bags of candy. Dad, Grandpa, Big Papa, Papa will be missed and remembered for the love and life lessons that he shared. His legacy continues in his children William/Sondra, Susanne, Karl and Robert/Theresa, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren with one in the oven. We will have a graveside memorial at Mills & Mills Memorial Park in Tumwater on 20th at 11:00 am. |
