Obituary: Rozier William Crew began life in Washington, DC on 11, 1932, the first born of Helen Davis Crew (Fletcher) and Lucius Crew. In his formative years he was parented by his paternal aunt and uncle, Estella and Mathew Fagan. Aunt Babe and Uncle Mat, as they were affectionately called, provided for Rozier and his sister Peggy a loving and enriched growing-up experience. Throughout his childhood, Rozier was nurtured by a large and loving family that included both parents, his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Among his fondest memories were the summers spent with his maternal grandparents, Louellen and Fitzhugh Davis, in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Rozier attended elementary and secondary schools in Washington, DC. He completed high school at the prestigious Mary Potter School, a former private school in Oxford, North Carolina. Following a tour of duty with the United States Army, he married the late Marlene Hughes (Crew). Born to that union were a daughter, Evelyn and a son Rozier Mathew. In the ensuing years, Rozier earned a Bachelors degree in teacher education at Bowie State and a Masters degree in Special Education from Temple University. In 1978, Rozier married his present wife Edith. From that union he gained a second daughter Dawn Lambert and Dawn gained an incredible father- friend. Shortly after their marriage, Rozier and Edith relocated to Florida where they lived for 25 years. During that time, he earned a second Masters degree from the Florida A and M University (FAMU) and was admitted to the Florida State University where he pursued course work toward the PhD in Adult Education. Throughout his career, Rozier participated in continuing education and training opportunities that extended and enhanced his formal education. Rozier’s working years and professional career were a rich variation of interests and pursuits. In his early adult years, he supported his family through a variety of venues ranging from the U.S. Post Office to juvenile rehabilitation programs. One of these opportunities led him to employment in a fine-jewelry operation in New York City. His pursuit of higher education opened the doors to several career options. He taught in Maryland and New Jersey public schools before entering private industry in the field of training, research and development where he spent many years creating and implementing programs for governmental entities and private agencies throughout the Continental U.S. and the Virgin Islands. In 1976, Rozier entered government service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Administration (FMHA) where he served in several training and administrative capacities through of 2007. Prominent among these were his assignment to open the first national training center for FMHA employees east of the Mississippi on the campus of FAMU, and his subsequent assignment as a USDA Liaison Officer. In that capacity, he mentored and shaped the careers of hundreds of college students who now serve our nation in several professional capacities. Rozier’s legacy is one of hard work, perseverance and achievement. However, he always made time for recreation. He was a life-long trophy- winning bowler, an avid golfer, a first-rate amateur photographer, a hobbyist and restorer of vintage cars, firearms, and timepieces. Rozier and Edith retired to the Charlottesville, Virginia area in 2006, where they resided in the Lake Monticello community. It was here that Rozier passed on May 10, 2017, under the care of Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville after a lengthy illness at home. In addition to his wife Edith, a son (Rozier Mathew), a daughter (Evelyn) and daughter Dawn, Rozier is survived by 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, a brother (Junius Fletcher), 3 aunts (Cora Blair, Washington, DC, Mildred Wilkins, Pemberton, NJ and Lucinda Brailsford, New York) and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by aunt and uncle Mathew and Estella Fagan, a sister (Peggy Crew Jones), his mother (Helen Davis Fletcher), father (Lucius Crew), brother (Lucius Crew, Jr.), and a nephew Kyle Jones. A funeral service will be conducted 12:00pm , May 18, 2017 at Teague , 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA. Interment will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens. A repast will follow the committal service at the funeral home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
