Obituary: Marshall Allen Coburn used his Golden ticket for his last train ride to Beulah Land on 21, 2015 at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born to Alfred (Doc) Walker and Mabel Dunn Coburn on 18, 1935. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Colleen Martin Coburn, his grandson, Marshall Lee Thurber, his brother in law, Harry Tabor, and sister in law, Dawana Martin as well as a host of other family and friends. He will be sorely missed by those who heard his stories about his childhood in Monroe and Bramwell, WV. He graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy in 1953 and joined the US Army shortly after. He was a Veteran of the Korean War earning the rank of Staff Sergeant while stationed in Germany and England and even marched in formation with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeths soldiers while serving there. Upon returning to the States, he attended Virginia Tech, firing Third on the Rifle Team there. He was authority on World War I, World War II history and the Kennedy Assassination which he researched exhaustively. He never met a stranger in all his travels, but always loved the Blue Ridge Mountains as home. He loved to play tricks on his family and friends. He was a poet that took notice of the environment around him during important times in his life and made that the subject of his writings. His regular letters to the editor of the Virginian Leader and the Roanoke Times had many fans. He worked hard all his life, first at four years old feeding the orphan lambs on the farm and at five taking the eggs in his wagon to his uncles store down the hill from the home place for his Grandmother Dunn. Working with the thrashing crew at the age of ten and finally getting to eat with the men folk. Mowing the hayfields and helping with the cattle kept him attentive to the world around him. Most recent, he retired from Norfolk & Southern as a Signal Maintainer having worked territories in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio with over thirty years of loyal service. He still missed the Yard there in Roanoke that now sits empty – quiet. He mourned the loss of jobs and equipment that he worked so hard to maintain. He knew every nut , bolt and wire in that Yard and never hesitated when called out to fix down equipment day or night or any kind of weather to keep the trains going and commerce flowing. That dedication was not wasted. He gave the same heart and soul to his home church, Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, VA. He helped with the building of the gym and putting in the floors and when the trailers were brought from Newcastle, he helped the other men in the mud to set them up. When asked to put the Dewey Decimal System in the church library, he promptly sold one of his very cherished possessions to be put the cost of that endeavor, purchasing all the supplies to accomplish that task. A father, brother, friend and prayer warrior who loved God, his Family, and Country and will be missed until we see him again on that day. He is survived by his children Amy, Debbie, and Barry (Leslie), his grandchildren, Marcus, Katherine, Samantha, and Sara Beth, and his great-grandchildren, Keegan, Kaleb, Levi, Devin, and Evelyn. Also his sister, Nancy Tabor, brothers-in-law Wayne Martin (Carol), Marvin H. (Rabbit) Martin (Terry), Oakley Martin (Elizabeth), Roger Martin (Virginia) and Gary Martin; extended family, Richard and Pat Knauss; special mentions, Roger and Betty Jo Browning, Kevin, and his canine companions, Rummy and Pepper. services will be held , 27th, 2015 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffes Service, Inc. with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview with graveside services conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, and American Legion Posts #68 of Narrows, #311 of Pembroke and #145 of Peterstown. The family will receive friends at Riffes Service from 6 to 8 PM. Obituary: Captain Joseph Leo Coburn, Jr. (U.S. Coast Guard retired) passed away peacefully 20, 2016 at Woodhaven Hall, Williamsburg Landing, Williamsburg, VA., with his wife, Alice, and family by his side. Joe was born in Chicago, IL. on 25, 1931, the oldest of five children, to Joseph L. Coburn Sr. and Margaret Coburn, now deceased. He grew up in Roxana, IL. and graduated in 1948 from Roxana High school. Joe entered the U. S. Coast Guard Academy New London, CT. in , 1951 and graduated May 25, 1955 commissioned as an ensign with a B.S. Engineering degree. He and Alice McKelden McNeil were married at the academy chapel on 25 of that year and departed for his first assignment on a CG cutter out of Oahu, Hawaii. 22 years service, Joe retired from the Coast Guard in of 1977 at the Coast Guard Shipyard in Curtis Bay, Md. where he had been assigned as Industrial (General) Manager. his Coast Guard service, Joe became an advisor to the Imperial Iranian Navy in Tehran, Iran as a consultant in the designing and building of a shipyard to support the Shah's naval base in Bandar Abbas on the Straits of Hormuz. That adventure was cut short by the Iranian revolution. He and Alice were evacuated from Tehran by a volunteer Pan American crew in 1979. He then joined, as a vice president, Arctec, Inc. a marine engineering firm in Columbia Md. While with Arctec, he was promoted to President of Arctec Alaska in Anchorage, AK. He remained with the firm until 1986. Joe ended his professional career after 15 years as Marine (Ship) Operations Manager for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole Ma. in 2002 where he was responsible for the renovation of two research vessels for both Woods Hole and Scripps Institute of Oceanography and in the construction of two other research vessels for both organizations, including the new Woods Hole mother ship, Atlantis, for the deep water submersible, Alvin, the piloted submarine responsible for the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic. Joe's post graduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) included a M.Sc. and Second Professional Degree both with honors in 1961. He was a member of the Research Vessel Operators' Committee, University-National Oceanography Laboratory System (UNOLS) on three separate committees. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honorary), the Society of Sigma Xi (Research Honorary), the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in three capacities including the Special Cargo Panel of which he was chairman, and he was a Fellow of the Explorers' Club. Joe was especially proud of his efforts that resulted in the establishment of the Cadet Honors program at the Coast Guard Academy which has been funded and supported by his fellow classmates in the class of 1955. That program has resulted in the most academically talented students receiving prestigious fellowships for post graduate studies throughout the world. Joe loved all sports, especially football and tennis, but his greatest love was for sailing the Chesapeake Bay with his family. Left to mourn his passing, besides his wife, Alice, with whom he was married for 61 years, he leaves his sons, Kenneth Donald (Commandeer, U.S. Navy Ret.) and his wife Dale, Bruce Richard and his wife Mary, his daughter, Cecilia Alice Teal, four grandchildren, Hallie, Katherine, Jessica and Andrew, his brothers, Patrick, John Michael, Timothy (Theresa) and their son, Matthew (Mary), sister, Margaret Ann Cope and his God son, Michael John Coburn. A memorial celebration will be held at a later time. Captain Coburn's family knows how grateful he would be if friends and family were to express their love and respect for him through a gift in support of the Cadet Honors Program directed to the USCG Academy Alumni Association, 47 Mohegan Ave. New London, Ct. 06320-8111. |
