Obituary: CHEWNING, Thomas Oren, 95, of Richmond, formerly of Doswell, Va., died , 10, 2014. He attended business college, majoring in accounting. His post secondary education was interrupted by his U.S. Army service from 4, 1941 to 16, 1945, which included 19 months in the military government in France and Germany. He ended his military service with a rank of Master Sergeant and received the Good Conduct Medal and the EAMET Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars. the war, he reunited with his young son and wife, to whom he remained happily married for 56 years until her death. He then continued his college business courses at night for 10 years. On 4, 1984, after a stellar career, he retired as vice president and treasurer of Molins Machine Co., Inc. One of his fellow company officers made this statement. "He had held us together not only because of the length of his service and his knowledge of the company, its customers, suppliers and of our occasionally eccentric friendly British associates, but outstandingly because of his own personality." Besides being a devoted husband and father of two children, he was a very giving and civic minded professional throughout his life. He served as president of the Richmond Export-Import Club, president and general chairman of the National Tobacco Festival for two years, occasional secretary and treasurer and long-term member of the Richmond Lakeside Lions Club, and president of the Business Opportunities for the Blind, an organization in which he volunteered for 25 years. He was also a very active member of First Baptist Church of Richmond having served as deacon since 1974 and having participated on numerous church committees. his successful business career, he continued volunteering for civic organizations and his church. He enjoyed gardening and traveling extensively abroad with his wife, Ellen, and visiting his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen, who passed away in 2009. He is survived by his son, Thomas Chewning Jr. and his wife, Ute; daughter, Barbara Deeks; granddaughter, Lynn Pekmezian and her husband, Dean; grandson, John Chewning and his wife, Danielle; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Nicholas and Maci Pekmezian, Aubrey and Owen Chewning. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. , 13, 2014 at The Cedarfield, 2300 Cedarfield Pkwy., Henrico, Va. 4th floor Great Room. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Burial will be private. |
