Obituary: Dorothy Davis Clark 18 1935 – 9 May 2014 Bring it on and sure seemed to be Dots attitude in life. Not that she sought hardship, but nothing kept her down for long. Beyond courageous, she seemed immune to fear. Will you marry me? asked the widower with 9 children. Let me think about it, she replied. Born to Carl Garrett Davis and Mary Elva Eaton in Vernal, Utah, Dorothy, the third of four children, grew up in the depression/war era but learned to love life despite its setbacks. No doubt this galvanized her character—loving life, family, and friends, focusing on all that is good while facing tribulation with indomitable tenacity. Dotty learned to adjust quickly and make friends easily as her family moved around, living in six towns during her first 10 years. She was wherever the action was: games, sports, swimming, or sledding, unless, of course, she had chores—they took priority. Dotty thrived in school—academically, musically, socially—and in life, spending many a summer away from home (the Grand Canyon, Seattle, Los Angeles), working and experiencing new places, new friends, new opportunities. For her, music was the thread that stitched her life. She was drum majorette for three years and played the clarinet in many bands, eventually chasing her passion by majoring in music at BYU. Reality convinced her to switch to elementary education, and, after graduating in 1957, she began her teaching career in San Diego, where she met and married James F. Smellie-Scott and together they had four children. More than a decade later, the family endured a year in Canada, resulting with Dotty and her four children returning home to Utah without James. Her greatest blessing, and perhaps greatest challenge, was when she met, then married Ray Hardy Clark in 1976. The two families became one with 13 children. And yes, she did mother all 13, even though some felt they were too old and didn need mothering. This wonderful family has grown into 13 children and spouses, 43 grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren, with four new ones on the way. As an avid BYU sports fan (some might say fanatic) her enthusiastic support doesn compare to the support shes given her children and grandchildren. No child in the history of sports ever had a greater fan than this Mom and Grandma, and the support didn stop with sports. Her family has been her pride and joy, and her support was never-ending. Dot and Ray served several valiant LDS missions, and they loved being each others missionary companion. Dot has been a powerful force for good, touching countless lives, never afraid to speak for truth and righteousness, absolute in faith and testimony, spirited in her service to God, certain of her destiny—she had no fear as she faced the reality that her life on Earth was quickly ending. She is missed by those whose lives she touched, especially her family. Dotty is survived by her children, Phil Clark, Harold Clark (Bonnie Bateman), Alan Clark, Kaye Clark Isakson (Bill), Gayle Clark Hinchcliff (Grant), Shari Clark Skabelund (Grant), Evan Clark (Corine Phillips), Brent Clark (Sherie Wunderlich), Tom Clark (Kathryn Holm), Shannon Clark Bryant (Mark), Darin Clark (Margaret Davis), Scott Clark (Loretta Jocobus), and Greg Clark (Michelle Hyde); brother, Glenn Carl Davis (Connie), and sister, Karren Glover (Kenneth); along with her 91 grand and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray Hardy Clark; her sister, Elva Joy Davis Robinson; and grandchildren, Angel Hinchcliff and Mathew Clark. : , 14 May, 11:00 a.m., Sharon Park Second Ward, 225 East 200 North, Orem. Viewing: , 13 May, 6:00–8:00 p.m., Walker Sanderson Mortuary, 646 East 800 North, Orem, and at the church on , 9:30–10:30 a.m. Interment at Evergreen in Springville, Utah. The family suggests Dots life be remembered by donating to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund. |
