Obituary: Mary Ruth Cox, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on , 15, 2014 in Tyler, Texas after a long and beautiful life. She was a loving supportive wife and a truly wonderful mother who made a happy home for her children. Her unshakable faith in Jesus, as evidenced by her dog-eared, notes-in-the-margin Bible, led her to be a positive influence in a number of peoples lives. She will be missed by many. Mary Ruth was born 1, 1923 in Houston, Texas to Guy and Lillie Pettigrew. From her hard working parents, she learned a work ethic that would serve her throughout her life. Her untiring efforts in the service of her family, friends, and humanity in general, was a wonder to behold. Mary Ruth just loved people. She wanted everyone to know the good news of Jesus Christ. She graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1940, then left for Abilene Christian where she first met Jim Cox. She later transferred to Sam Houston State, earned a degree in education and taught school for two years. With the war coming, she took a job in Texas City as a chemical technician. While there, she lived in Galveston where she re-met Jim Cox at a fraternity party. This time it was love. married in May, 1945 and were married 67 years! saw much of the world together while raising their large family. Mary Ruth was to know much joy in her life, but she certainly had her share of sorrow as well. She lost a child when only an infant, and she also endured the agony of her husbands battle with polio in 1952. But through it all, her (and her husbands) incredible faith provided the strength to go forward. In addition to being a good businesswoman, she was very involved with the local PTA at her childrens schools. She taught a Ladies Bible class for many years. But she always, always had time for her kids. Her enormous presence in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and respective in-laws, will always be felt. She will be sorely missed, yet fondly remembered. She is survived by: daughter, Phyllis Cox Crawford; daughter and son-in-law, Donna Cox Mullins and Bill Mullins; son and daughter-in-law, James Franklin Cox III and Connie Cox; son and daughter-in-law, Russell Lewis Cox and Marcy Halterman-Cox; grandchildren, Charles Crawford, Shelley Crawford, Mary Beth Crawford Pittman, Matthew Crawford, Ryan Mullins, Kevin Mullins, Kyle Mullins, Jordan Mullins, Alex Mullins, Jared Cox, Ruth Anne Cox Thornton, Aine Cox, and Eva Cox; and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James Franklin Cox, Jr.; parents, Guy and Lillie Pettigrew; brothers, Guy Pettigrew Jr. and Keith Pettigrew; and her son, Alan Lowell Cox. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on 17th at Brookside . A Service will be held at the Candlelight Church of Christ, 4215 Watonga Blvd, Houston, TX 77092, at 1 p.m. on 18th with interment to follow at Brookside Memorial Park. |
