Obituary: On 1, 1931, Clyde Dexter Cox was the fourth child born to Clyde and Oma Lois Park Cox on the Jim Sharp Place at Slate Shoals, Texas, on the banks of the Red River near Paris. In 1936, the family moved from being Share Croppers on the Jim Sharp Place to being Share Croppers on the Tom Lane Place at Frogville, Oklahoma. To avoid the children attending a two room local school, Lois insisted that they move from Frogville so that the two youngest children could get a better education. On 1, 1940 the family moved to a one hundred fifty acre farm at Petty, Texas, that they had purchased. Dexter (Deck) as he was called until entering the United States Air Force, attended school at Petty Jr. High and in 1948, at the age of 16 years, graduated from Honey Grove High School. It was at Petty that Deck learned most of the Christian and work ethic that was to carry him for the rest of his life. Deck said that what ever he had become in life, it was primarily in the cotton patches of East Texas that he learned hard work, personal discipline, organization, and duty to family and country. In 1945, father, Clyde Cox, had major surgery and was required to remain in bed for three months, while Deck, Lois, and a share cropper farmed and made a crop on the one hundred fifty acres. During the years at Petty, none of the children were ever allowed or required to miss a day of school to work in the fields. Lois would prepare a breakfast around five a.m. and get Clyde and Deck off to the field until it was time for the children to go to school. Lois would go to the field and replace Deck, who was plowing with mules and a walking cultivator, so that he could go to school. As soon as school was over, all the children went home, changed clothes, and went to work in the fields. Deck replaced Lois, who went home and milked the cow or cows and prepared supper for the family who worked until dark (usually sever-thirty to eight at night. Deck graduated from high school in 1948 and attended SMU for one semester. Having been overwhelmed with the social and economic status of the students in SMU, he only stayed one week and returned to the farm. When Jim Sharp dropped by the farm, he asked why Deck was not in school, and the lame excuse was that the family didn have the money. Mr. Sharp, a graduate of the University of Texas, wrote a check for $25, which was the tuition at SMU, and told him to repay the loan some year before , as that was the time that Mr. Sharp always had to pay his farm loans. Deck attended SMU only one semester and returned to work on the farm. World War II had ended in 1945, but all men over the age of 18 were required to register for the draft. Not being able to get a meaningful job because of 1-A classification, Deck worked in the oil fields as a rough neck for one year and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on 21, 1950. He served as an enlisted man until the Air Force needed cannon folder for the Korean War. Deck, now Clyde, entered aviation cadets and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 23, 1953, earning navigator/bombardier wings in 1953. On 23, 1956, Clyde was released from the Air Force as a First Lieutenant and attended SMU on a full time basis, while working at Caudle Engraving Co. as a full time employee. On 25, 1958, Clyde married the beautiful and loving Carol E. Moallankamp, while working at Oil Well Supply Co. in Dallas. In 1959, Clyde was recalled into the Air Force and was assigned to a Air Refueling unit. During the tours of duty in the Air Force, Clyde was a navigator/bombardier on B-25, B-26 aircraft and a navigator on C-124 transports, KC-97 and KC-135 tankers. In 1974, Clyde retired as a Lt. Col. And moved with Carol to San Antonio, TX., where he started teaching high school math. He was voted Judson ISDs candidate for the Trinity Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1987, after thirteen years of shear enjoyment of teaching, he retired from teaching and started his third career in real estate sales and land development. acquiring a Brokers license, he retired in 1998. In 2001, to keep up with the habit of always changing careers in the midst of an economic down turn, he reopened a real estate office in the town that he loved, Garden Ridge. He maintained this office until 1, 2005 and retired for the fourth time. Clyde is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean Cox McCloud; sister, Betty Cox Collins. He is survived his wife, Carol Cox; brother, Thomas D. Cox; brother, John W. Cox; sister, Mary Cox Phillips. SERVICE
