Obituary: Betty Ellen Rhymes Cowan at 87, returned to her eternal heavenly father on 15, 2016 after a long struggle with dementia and later Alzheimers disease. The devotion of her family and her faith in God supported her in this struggle and ultimately gave her peace. Betty was born to the late V.L. and Hazel Rhymes, a railroad switchman and a homemaker, in Denison, TX on 4, 1928. She was part of the railroad and Christian community in Denison that would be a great influence on her the rest of her life. She came from a poor family whose home was a converted railroad boxcar. She lost her father in a railroad accident at an early age. In 1943 she married Billy Ross Cowan, also a railroad switchman, now deceased and had two sons. She graduated from the Denison High School; Salutatorian and later obtained an Associate Degree from Austin Community . While in Denison she worked at Bell Telephone, Kresss department store and ultimately working as an assistant for a physicians office for eight years. Bettys life changed when the family relocated to Austin, Texas in 1961 when her husband became a union railroad lobbyist. She was employed at Burnet Junior High as a secretary to the counseling department and retired from that position in 1991. She managed to find time to attend Austin Community and graduated in 1981. The move to Austin gave Betty an exposure to ideas that fed her creativity. She became a talented landscape painter, an accomplished quilter and avid reader with interests in art, fossils and geology. She spent much of the time in her later life researching the familys genealogy. Billy, her husband, became seriously ill and retired in 1981 at the age of 56. Betty was his caregiver and constant companion until he died in 1999. Betty was blessed with a large and loving family and is survived by her sons Terrence and Michael Cowan, Terrences spouse Maggie Cowan, Michaels ex-spouse Tracy Cowan. Her grandchildren; Cody Cowan, Kelly and Travis Peterson, Tara and David Marquez, Lindsey and Satch Ellis, Jennifer and Gary Montgomery, as well as her great grandchildren; Billy Cowan, Ella and Henry Peterson, Janeah, Aaliyah, and Gavyn Ellis, Desiree Harvey and Alyssa Montgomery. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Billy Ross Cowan, her brother Franklin Rhymes, and her mother and father V.L. and Hazel Rhymes. Betty will be buried at the Coffman-Layne at 11:00 a.m. on 21st, with a lunch to follow at the Cotton Patch off Morton Street and Hwy 75. The family gratefully declines flowers and donations, but prayers, condolences and memories are gladly accepted at the web site. |

Obituary: Betty Goeddertz Cowan met her Savior Jesus Christ in heaven , 19, at 1 p.m. Betty was a loving and gracious wife, mother, and grandmother and spent her life fiercely living for her Lord and educating and serving others. Betty graduated as valedictorian of the Port Neches-Groves class of 1948 and then obtained her BBA degree from Sam Houston State University and her Master's degree from Lamar University. Betty spent 30 years teaching business education classes. She began teaching at Thomas Jefferson High School and Port Arthur Adult Night School. Most of her teaching career, however, was at her beloved PN-G High School where she made lifelong friendships and was privileged to affect the lives of hundreds of students, including 30 student teachers. While teaching, she sponsored many student organizations, coached UIL typing and shorthand winners, and was an active member of all the teacher organizations. She was honored to receive the District Business Teacher of the Year award but, most of all, she was adamant that her students seek knowledge and excellence. Betty was a School teacher for over forty years and was a faithful member of Magnolia Church in Port Neches. Following her retirement in 1990, she volunteered at Community and Prayer Outreach, enjoyed her Extension club, looked forward to lunches with Red Hat and Amazing Grace friends, attended Mid- Retired School Personnel meetings, and traveled all over the world. Survivors are her daughters and their families: Brenda and Glenn Farris and their children Stephani Farris and Zack and Marcella Farris, Terri and Kim Cormier and their daughters Natalie and Anna, and sister, Elizabeth Treaster. Those predeceasing her are husband, Darrell Cowan, parents, Leroy and Georgia Goeddertz, sister, Georgia Duplissey, brother, Roy Goeddertz, and nephew Steve Treaster. Private burial service will be immediately following the service. Much love and appreciation is extended to Betty's wonderful caregivers toward the end of her life: Yvonne, Annette, Linda, and Paula. In lieu of flowers, Betty's wishes are that memorials be sent to Community Retirement , 3141 Proctor, Port Arthur, TX 77642, Community and Prayer Outreach, 808B Nederland Avenue, Nederland TX 77627, or Magnolia Church, 2215 Nall Street, Port Neches TX 77651.
