Obituary: Janet Gill Cooper, retired American history teacher, died , 11, 2014. She was born in Lockport, New York on 3, 1923, the eldest daughter of James S. Gill and Florence Greenway Gill. Janet graduated from Lockport High School and attended Wooster in Ohio until WWII interrupted her education. During the war, she married her college sweetheart, Stewart E. Cooper. In 1949, Stewart Cooper was hired by Texas A&I , so the couple and their two children moved to Kingsville, Texas. The family soon grew to four children. Janet was a stay-at-home mom in the 1950s who was busy not only raising four kids, but also helped caring for many dogs, hamsters, kittens, a horse and assorted guinea pigs. She found time to serve as president for both the League of Women Voters and Business & Professional Womens Foundation (BPW.) She was inquisitive and a voracious reader and instilled a love of books in her children and later in her grandchildren. When her children reached high school age, Janet returned to college and graduated with a degree in education and history. Janet Cooper began teaching at H.M. King High School in Kingsville in 1967 and retired in 1988. having taught for five years, Janet spent the years between 1972 and 1980 out of a job and in court. In 1972, the Kingsville Independent School District did not renew her contract because several of the parents had objected to the teaching methods used by Janet in her classroom. As soon as KISD notified her that her contract would not be renewed, the district petitioned the court for a ruling that they had not violated her rights. Janet Cooper then filed suit. In the ensuing lawsuit, the federal district court in Corpus Christi ruled in her favor. The school district appealed. In 1973, the National Education Association joined the suit. The process of decision and appeal went on for 8 years, with each decision made in favor of the teacher, Janet Cooper. Finally, in 1980, Janets legal battle resulted in a precedent-setting ruling in her favor by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, assuring that teachers speech in the classroom remains protected under the First Amendment. She was granted back pay with retirement benefits as well as reinstatement of her job. Janet returned to teaching at H. M. King High School in Kingsville and worked until her retirement in 1988. Kingsville Independent School District v Janet Cooper is still used as precedent in cases to protect teachers rights and is mandatory reading for school administrators in Texas. In retirement, Janet explored interests that she had not had time to pursue when working full-time. Always active, Janet traveled with her husband, and frequently with her grandchildren, to Spain, Mexico, France, Egypt, England, Poland, Canada and to the Caribbean. She began studying classical guitar (her last lesson was on 9, 2014), she became a master gardener and had a greenhouse filled with orchids, violets and bromeliads, she made quilts and quilted wall-hangings for which she won many prizes, she served as a docent at the Conner Museum at Texas A&M Kingsville. She served on the board of the Fryderyk Chopin Society of South Texas in Corpus Christi for 20 years and was a board member (President and Secretary) of the Trinity Towers Residents Association. Janet Cooper promoted recycling as early as the 1970s and recently, she encouraged her neighbors to participate in the recycling program at Trinity Towers. Janet was always a strong voice for social justice and backed up her advocacy with activism. During the 1950s, she worked to help the disenfranchised to vote. At age 91 she was still busy registering voters in Nueces and canvassing for her candidates. Janet Cooper is survived by daughters, Carol Wood (San Antonio, TX); Ann McTier (Corpus Christi, TX); Patricia Citty (Austin, TX) and by her grandchildren, David Wood (Hyannis, MA); Gail Sanders (Boston, MA); Cynthia Sanders (Austin, TX); Molly De La Paz (Kingsville, TX); Raleigh Citty (Austin, TX) and by her great-grandchildren, Dillan Gonzales (Austin, TX); Abilena and Cole De La Paz (Austin, TX); James Citty (Austin, TX.) She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart E. Cooper, her son, James Walter Cooper and her sister, Marie Gill Abney. A Memorial Service is scheduled at Trinity Towers, 101 N. Upper Broadway in Corpus Christi, on , 5, 2014 at 2:00 pm. Valet parking will be available. A private interment will be held in Kingsville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jim Cooper Memorial Scholarship Endowment, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, Dept of Environmental Engineering, MSC 213, 917 W. Ave. B, Kingsville, TX 78363 |

Obituary: Jane B. Cooper, a resident of Houston, Texas for 57 years was born in Fernandina Beach, Florida the sixth of seven children of Byron B. and Adaline Brooks. She graduated high school in Morgan City, Louisiana. She worked as a book keeper in Morgan City where she met and later married her husband of 54 years, Carl L. Cooper, who died in 2003. Jane is survived by her two sons, Richard D. Cooper of Irving, Texas and Carl (Dan) Cooper, his wife Deborah A. and granddaughter Megan R. of Fulshear, Texas. Janes interests included gardening in which she took special pride including several Yard of the Month awards, an adamant fan of the Houston Rockets and an Eastern Star member for over 60 years. She opened an antique business called the HenCoop in Houston and later moved it to the Peanut Butter Warehouse located on the Strand in Galveston, Texas. She loved the antique store, but more for the people she met than the antiques. Her love of people and conversation is what she enjoyed. She was passionate in all she did, but her biggest joy was family. She could tell you about each extended family member from where they were located to what they were doing. She relished receiving a card, a picture or just hearing from family scattered across the states and would talk for hours to who would ever listen. She cherished family reunions and get-togethers from the holidays to anyones birthday or any family event. A special wife, mother and grandmother that will be missed, but remembered well. |
