In 1914, when he started carrying the mail there were 200 families on his route and he used a horse and buggy to make his trips. Then in 1921, he bought his first automobile to carry the mail. During his 27 years of service as a United States mail carrier, he purchased eight automobiles and traveled approximately 300,000 miles over the same roads.
