Obituary: Billy Wayne Cohen-Vaughan was born 20, 1950, in Dallas, Texas, to William Vaughan and Dorothy Lee Barnes. He was the eldest of four children. Bill married Darlene Holston and they had one daughter together, Belinda. He cherished both of them dearly; along with his grandson Dylan, granddaughter Paige and great granddaughter Lexi Rae. Bill was a hard worker from a young age. He was a brilliant man who was proficient at any task he undertook. He was a Hospital Administrator, a Psychotherapist, a Clinical Social Worker, Director of Education for Aladdin Beauty s, a Singer, a Pastor and so much more. He was a published author who loved learning and was also known to be a “professional student,” going back to every few years to add yet another degree to his accomplishments. Though Bill worked night and day, he would occasionally find time to watch some of his favorite shows in his favorite spot. He enjoyed lying in bed, typing on his laptop, eating Blue Bell ice cream, while watching TV. Some of his favorite shows to watch were Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Judge Judy, and more recently The Golden Girls. He also loved to watch classic horror movies such as Frankenstein and Dracula. One of his favorite TV channels was the History Channel, as he loved learning. Bill was a caring, helpful man, with a talent for listening. He was a man of faith who loved people, an incessant worker, and according to his best friend, he was “just the smartest man” too. On , 15, 2014, Billy Cohen-Vaughan made his transition. His life ended too soon; he had so much more to offer the world. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Dorothy Vaughan, and his brother, James Vaughan. Obituary: Walter Cohen passed away on 28, 2009. He was born on 17, 1920 in Wichita Falls, the 4th of 5 children. He attended public school in Wichita Falls, graduating in 1938. He attended a reform Jewish Temple where he was confirmed. Like his siblings, he worked to help his mother, a widow, rather than going to college. He first worked at Art Jewelry (1938) and then Zales Jewelry (1939), which originated in Wichita Falls, and where he worked for 38 years. He was drafted in 1942 and served in the 96th Infantry Division of the Army. His training was in Camp Adair, Oregon. 5 weeks in Hawaii, he fought in the South Pacific, including campaigns in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged in 1946 in El Paso, TX. He worked in Zales home office in Dallas and then their stores in El Paso, Amarillo, and Lubbock. In 1948, feeling strongly about the Israeli battle for independence, he joined the Machalniks, volunteers from many nations who went to Israel to help them fight, risking their own citizenships. He fought there in the 7th Brigade which conducted a campaign in the Galilee. As the only Texan in his Brigade, he was known as "Tex" Cohen. His detailed journal from that period is a valuable part of the archives which have been collected in Florida and will eventually be available in New York through the American Jewish Historical Society. Walter was a staunch supporter of the State of Israel throughout his life. that war, Walter spent some time writing songs in "Tin Pan Alley" in New York City with Frank Perlman, with whom he fought in Israel. One of their novelty songs, The Lake Song, was actually recorded by Ethel Merman & Ray Bolger, but was never released until the 21st century. He returned to Zales, working in Austin & Galveston, then managing stores in Harlingen, Laredo, Dothan, Alabama, San Antonio, Puerto Rico, and McAllen. As a bachelor, he was often moved where the company needed him. He was able to practice his Spanish in many of these towns. Walter retired in 1977 and moved back to Austin. Because of his strong love and devotion to his family, he launched a search for his roots on his mothers side (without a computer), which took him overseas and culminated in the first family reunion in Memphis in 1980, including 140 attendees from all over the U.S. and the world. This was followed by 6 more reunions over 20 years. He actually uncovered hidden branches of the family tree in his research, tracing his family roots back to Lithuania. In more recent years, Walter was a long-time greeter and volunteer at Congregation Beth Israel in Austin. With the ultimate in people skills and a keen interest in people and their family origins, this is a job he was born to do. He was a warm welcoming beacon to newcomers as well as established members. He attended courses in Judaism there to meet many new members. This led him to notice a trend in people with Spanish surnames who were converting to Judaism. He became fascinated with the Crypto-Jews, who dated from the Spanish Inquisition, where they pretended to be Catholics to survive. He attended some of the first conferences of these groups in the Southwest and was invited to speak about the phenomenon. Walter was always awed to see some people choosing Judaism as their faith. Walter is beloved by members of Congregation Beth Israel, and they previously honored him by naming their foyer where he greeted members as "The Walter Cohen Foyer." a head injury in 2006, he lived in the nursing home setting at the Summit at Westlake Hills and later at the Retirement on Burnet Lane. He was a sweet and much beloved patient during this phase of life, retaining his gregarious, humorous and caring nature. Walter was preceded in death by many beloved family members, including his parents, Rebecca and Lazarus Cohen, his siblings, Daniel "Bub" Cohen, Dorothy "Dolly" Smith, Miriam "Goo" Yaffe, and his in-laws Eva Dale Cohen and Sol Smith. He is survived by his brother, Alfred "Shuggie" Cohen of Ft. Worth, eight nieces and nephews with equally superb memories of their Uncle Walter, and his extended, all-embracing and adoring family and friends. The family is grateful to Dr. Theresa Albright for her three years of continuous care for Walter and acknowledges the invaluable support of his loyal and caring sitter, Mary Lou Juarez, who brought hands-on quality to Walters later years and was a terrific resource on his daily patterns and changes. Services will be held on , 29th at 3:00 pm at Congregation Beth Israel, 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd., Rabbi Steven Folberg and Rabbi Cookie Lea Olshein, officiating, followed by interment at Cook Walden Capital Park Beth Israel III in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may send contributions in his name to Congregation Beth Israel, "Dollys Playground Fund," 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd., Austin, TX 78756, or to a charity of their choice. |

Obituary: Ruth G. Cohen, 80, of Station, Texas passed away on , 30, 2013, in St. Louis, Missouri. Ruth was born on 20, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to Frieda and Abe Goldberg. Abe had come to San Antonio as a young man and Frieda had been born and raised there. Growing up in Alamo Heights, Ruth was close to her sisters Evelyn and Shirley, developed a life- long love for reading, an intense dislike of geometry, and made friendships which lasted her entire life. It was as a teenager that Ruth met the love of her life, Aaron Cohen, when she was just 14 and he 16. She said the first time she met Aaron she thought he was smart, cute and Jewish. Aaron felt the same, and the two married on 7, 1953 in San Antonio. Their marriage was a true partnership that lasted until Aaron passed away in , 2010. Ruth finished her college education at Trinity University during Aarons service of duty. Following his return, they moved first to New Jersey and then to San Diego as Aaron pursued his engineering career and they started their family. Nancy and David were born in New Jersey and Daniel in San Diego. It was also during this time that it became clear Ruth would not be shy about giving Aaron her opinion on his career and the decisions he should make. One of her early opinions, that the microwave oven Aaron was working on would be of no practical use, was something the family liked to remind her of in later years. However, her strong encouragement of Aaron that he should pursue his dream to work on the newly formed national space program and take a job with NASA in Houston, turned out to be best advice Aaron could receive. As Aaron moved up the ranks at NASA, Ruth was right there with him. When Aaron was named Director of the Johnson Space , one of his close associates said we have not gotten just one great leader but two, since we also got Ruth. As Aaron worked long hours and traveled a lot, Ruth ran the household and was a wonderful loving mother to her three children. She went to swimming meets and tennis tournaments and saw that they did their homework, went to religious school (which was no easy task given that it was a good 45 minute ride each way from their home in Seabrook to the Temple in Galveston) and participated in school activities. Later she went back to work at of U of H CLC to help pay for her childrens college and law school educations. Ruth passed on to her children her love of reading, the value of hard work, taking responsibility for ones own actions, frugality and her brand of politics. Some of her beliefs took hold better than others (she used to say to her children there was no reason to put the air conditioning on in the car as they drove to the tennis courts or cheerleading practice because they were about to get hot anyway - NOT a practice the next generation has maintained). It gave Ruth great satisfaction that her three children were happily married to wonderful spouses and she adored her 9 grandchildren. She was Nonna to her grandchildren and loved to communicate with them where ever they might be, sometimes around the world, by e-mail. She loved to go visit them at home and at school and be involved with them as they pursued their myriad of activities. To the very end she was emailing with each of them (pretty impressive for someone of her generation), knew what each of them was up to, was excited about their successes and willing to express her opinion on what they should be doing and the issues they faced. She and Aaron thought it very important that the grandchildren know just how special they were to them and develop a deep bond of family even though spread-out throughout the country, living in New York, Texas, Missouri and California. Ruth and Aaron organized family vacation trips for many years each and special trips with each of their grandchildren (2 at a time) to London (Cara and Ariela and then later Rachel and Carolyn), Boston (Sammy and Brian) and on a cruise (Gabby and Natalie) - the most food was eaten on the trip with the two boys. Sadly Aaron passed away before they could go on a trip with Brooke. High on Nonnas bucket list was that Brooke should get her trip, and with the help of Brookes older sister Rachel, she made that trip to Florida just last summer.
