Obituary: As twilight scuds over the bluebonnets of Texas, Daddy is driving into the sunset. Those of us who sat in the back seat celebrate a life well-lived.
A poster child for the Greatest Generation, Frank was born to a young Swedish immigrant who crossed the Atlantic, sailed past the Statue of Liberty, walked through Ellis Island, and lived his dream. Frank admired his dad and lived by his creed: hard work, integrity and loyalty.
Frank had a different dream. From the beginning, engineering was in Franks blood, and MIT was a perfect match for his exceptional mind; the world was his oyster. In an era when America had a love affair with cars and oil was revered, Texaco made him an offer he couldn refuse. Lured by the Siren Song of the land of orange groves and palm trees and blue waves, Frank headed west for California, never realizing his trip would lead to a forty-three year career.
Fortunately for us, an intelligent, Iowan beauty, Evelyn Parish, was hired as his secretary. Sparks flew, courtship ensued, and Frank had the good sense to put a ring on her finger. On 21, 1946, Frank and Evelyn married and a family was born. Theirs has been a loving, devoted marriage, a partnership of sixty-eight years and the genesis of three generations, Daddys greatest achievement.
For the next six decades, family would be Franks heart, literally. In the backdrop of the 1950s and 1960s, family life looked more like \Leave it to Beaver than Modern Family. Mom presided over the children and a Martha Stewart household, while Frank accomplished all things engineering. Inside our family home, Bruce listened to The Four Seasons, Carol practiced The Sound of Music on the piano, and Robert accumulated merit badges. A master of understatement, Daddys actions spoke volumes. We took for granted that he loved us and would provide for us. Of course, he would be at our graduations and weddings. Naturally, he believed in church and God. And when we hurt, he hurt more. Daddy was larger than life, and we looked up to him. At the time, we were not aware that we were beyond fortunate; we were oblivious to the reality that we lived a charmed life.
We were, by extension, members of the Texaco family as well. These engineers were the Texaco A-Team, brilliant minds from MIT and Georgia Tech and Cal Tech. But to us they were the gentlemen of oil. Their families were our family, sharing Easter and Thanksgiving feasts, playing bridge, and cruising the world. We knew You could trust your car to the man who [wore] the star, because the man was Daddy.
During our most recent family dinner, Daddy unexpectedly stated, I want to speak. The request caught us off guard; all eyes were on Dad. He spoke eloquently at length about his father and the courage it took to sail across the ocean to follow his dream. Daddy wanted to be sure we never forgot Grandpa Clauson. However, we told him what Grandpa already knew, that Daddy was a great man, too, and their legacy lives on in each of the future generations.
Tack sa mycket (Thank you very much), Dad

Evelyn May Clauson, born February 14, 1924 passed from this world into the next September 14, 2016 in Texas. Evelyn was 92. Obituary: On Valentines Day, 1924, as Model Ts drove down Main Street to the General Store, Evelyn Parish was born under the vast Iowa sky. Evelyn was defined by her birth. She loved hearts and chocolates and flowers, but she loved sending valentines even more, opening her heart to others.

A child of the Iowa breadbasket, Evelyns parents had followed the American Dream after her father battled the Bolsheviks during the Great War. Blonde and blue-eyed, Evelyn was blessed with the heartland spirit, with roots as deep and strong as the corn crops around her. But growing up in the dust bowl was a struggle; and Evelyn, bright, young and ambitious, yearned for more than life on the farm.
The land of lush orange groves, endless beaches and all-year sunshine, California was a long way from the farm. Evelyn studied briefly at UCLA before becoming a secretary at Texaco. Little did she know it was a choice that would change her life. When the booming voice over the dictaphone turned out to be a handsome, young engineer named Frank Clauson, the trajectory of both of their lives changed. Smitten by her blue eyes, open heart, and winning smile, romance bloomed. On 21, 1946, they exchanged vows in a wartime ceremony that would last a lifetime, a loving partnership that would span sixty-eight years and three generations.

As the Cold War raged around us, it was warm inside our home. While the brilliant Frank did all things Texaco, Mom was the glue that kept the household running smoothly. She made life beautiful, channeling her inner decorator and trying a fresh supply of recipes. She was the helping hand, the casserole on the doorstep, the face of caring. She understood love was in the details. Returning home after school was like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket, complete with home-baked cookies and a glass of milk. More often than not, Mom was laughing in the living room, over a cup of tea with a friend. It wasn a house; it was a home, and Mother was its heart.

Like most Moms of the 50s, Evelyn wanted to make sure her kids understood what was important, and she wasn shy about telling us. Hers were common sense values forged in the plains of Iowa: be humble; trust in God; do the right thing. The truth is children learn infinitely more from what you do than what you say. Mother lived by the Golden Rule - she treated others as she would like to be treated. She walked the walk. It was really as simple as that.
Evelyn always claimed to be Texan by choice. In 1963, when bluebonnets carpeted the four-laned Katy Freeway and glass skyscrapers were mushrooming downtown, Houston was a unique blend: city meets country, New York meets Iowa, Frank meets Evelyn. Leaving freezing snowfalls for a tropical climate in the hey-day of oil was a no-brainer. There was nothing to lose.

Evelyn and Frank would raise their family beneath the shade of a canopy of tall pines for over half a century. Ours was an Ozzie and Harriet life, a Norman Rockwell painting. As we grew, Mother reinvented the wheel - from pushing strollers to putting training wheels on bicycles to teaching us how to drive. As Kennedy asked us to Ask not., the Real Housewives of Houston all practiced free-range parenting. Before the advent of cell phones and Pokemon, children constantly played outdoors, breathing in the fresh air. Neighbors watched out for each others children as they bounced tennis balls in the street, and jumped rope and teetered on new bikes. While Andy Griffith patrolled Mayberry and astronauts orbited the earth, Bruce championed Martin Luther King, Carol sang in the church choir, and Robert wrote Presidents for advice. It was an innocent time, a slower time, a safer time. We knew that Mom and Dad loved us. We expected to go to college. We never doubted that they would be at our graduations and weddings. We were blissfully unaware that we led a charmed life.
Before the ink dried on the last sheepskin, Mom and Dad bought new luggage and put it to use. circled the globe like nomads, with Texaco friends and Venturers alike, collecting stamps on their passports from Tokyo to London to Rome. It was hard to keep up with their itineraries, but they always returned with a fresh supply of photos, T-shirts, and memories to share.

Its impossible to say goodbye, so we will say Je Reviens, Moms favorite perfume, until we meet again. Though our hearts are aching for our loss, Mom and Dad are dancing in each others arms now, smiling down and leading the way.

Obituary: On a crisp day as the autumn leaves turned orange and red and gold, Evelyn and Frank Clauson proudly welcomed their first-born son, Bruce, into the world. Like most young, post-war couples, they were anxious to put down roots and start a family.

Although he was the first baby boomer born into the family, Bruce was a throwback to a past, more conservative era. Bruce was more focused on family than fortune, on persons more than property, on conversation more than compensation, and on values more than value. He liked to do the right thing, not for the accolades he would receive, but because it was right. His mantra was adopted from his role model, John Wayne, A mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

While the Cold War raged outside, it was warm inside the Clauson family home. Father Frank accomplished all things Texaco, and Mom Evelyn created a cozy home for her family, which soon grew to four with the arrival of baby sister Carol. The Clausons were a poster 1950's family, a Norman Rockwell childhood: playing with model trains, riding bikes to the pool, and watching black and white TV - all three stations!! In an era before SIRI, we breathlessly awaited the delivery of the 26 volume World Book Encyclopedia - information!!

In the early sixties, the Clausons moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, just outside Philadelphia, where Bruce would be exposed to one of the greatest loves of his life - music. As Dick Clark hosted American Bandstand on the local television station, Bruce discovered Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. The Clauson family home would be filled with the harmonic sound of Big Girls Don Cry. In the final years of his life, one of his happiest moments would occur when he saw Jersey Boys live in Las Vegas.

With the advent of central air-conditioning, the nation moved south and so did the Clausons. Bruce began a life-long love affair with Texas in 1963, when the family left New Jersey snowstorms for Houston's tropical climate to follow the Great Oil Migration. Raised among the skyscrapers of Houston, it is a mystery where Bruce's Texas drawl came from, but every conversation began with his trademark "Howdy." His heart was as big as the Lone Star State. He embraced all things Texas: Texas barbeque, the Alamo and cowboys. He would spend the rest of his life in the shade of Houston's tall pines. Texas had enough space to let Bruce be Bruce.

Bruce had a perennial love of history and geography. Like most families of the 50s and 60s, the Clausons hit the road for family driving vacations. Before there was GPS, there was Bruce. With his highly developed sense of direction, he earned the moniker - the "Navigator".

More importantly, Bruce finally had a little brother, and he reveled in the role. Bruce and Robert would become the closest of brothers. did guy things together: eating prime rib, going to stamp conventions, and watching sports. travelled together. shared politics - Democrats need not apply. had each other's back.
Mom and Dad watched proudly as Bruce marched across the stage in his cap and gown, rooted for the Lumberjacks at Stephen F Austin University, and embarked on life. diploma in hand, Bruce returned to Houston and proceeded to immerse himself in his work and the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church family. Unaffected by materialistic things, people always came first for Bruce. a busy week working as a patient counselor, weekends were an excuse to help move someone into a new apartment, even though Bruce would only move himself once in the last 40 years of his life. In a world of excess, Bruce was the definition of humble. He lived a simple life, a quiet life, an important life.

Bruce never met a train he didn't like. In the late 1970s, he would venture out of the country to achieve one lifelong dream. He traveled to Canada to board the Canadian Pacific railroad. The rest of his life he would regale people with stories of the glittering Lake Louise and the snow capped mountains of Banff. He was amazed by the ornate architecture of Montreal and the towers of Calgary.

There was a time when we thought Bruce might just become a confirmed bachelor, but he proved us wrong. When a hazel-eyed, brunette Maria Chamberlain visited the MDPC Singles Group, sparks flew, courtship followed, and Bruce and Maria were married on 6, 1991, the entire wedding catered by his MDPC friends to pay him back for all those moves!! It was the beginning of a life-long partnership of two uniquely matched people.

Surrounded by girls after living alone for twenty years had to be an adjustment, but having a family completed Bruce. He was kind, patient, and steadfast. As a bonus, Bruce had gained a rebellious twelve-year-old daughter, Stacey. Bruce was up to the challenge. He simply told Stacey that he was never giving up on her, and he didn't. He bought her ice cream; he told corny jokes; he did bad impressions; he waited up for her to come home; he gave her away at her wedding; he became her hero, her Dad.

Bruce and Maria would fill twenty-six years of marriage with plenty of life and adventure, even though the time was way too short. Stacey would marry the love of her life, Nigel Richardson, and they would give Bruce the greatest gift of his life, two grandchildren - Miles and Nicholas, who were the pride of his life until his final days. Bruce and Maria would also begin to travel. would explore the home of their beloved Cajun culture in Louisiana and exotic spots such as Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Southern California.

Over his last few years, Bruce and his two siblings became a continued...
