Obituary: Lucia, also known as Prachumporn Chotiros, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 of natural causes, at the North Austin Medical on 11 2010. She is survived by her son Nicholas, and grand children Kathleya, Carissa, Joseph, Nicholas Jr. and Alexander. Lucia was born in Bangkok, Thailand, 19 1919, to Uab Kochaseni, a Thai of Mon descent, and Joseph Gregorievich Loris-Melikov, the Tzars Minister to the Court of Siam, a well-educated Russian gentleman of Armenian extraction. Her mother developed diabetes and died when Lucia was six years old. Her father, she never met, because, at the news of the outbreak of the Bolshevik revolution and the collapse of the Russian government, he immediately made his way back to Russia to serve in the administration of Admiral Kolchak, which was fighting the communists from Siberia. That lasted a few years, and then he, along with his compatriots, had to flee. He found refuge in France as part of the Russian diaspora. He never returned and died in 1950 in the Russian nursery home of Sainte Geneviève-des-Bois and was buried in a nearby Russian cemetery. Lucia was brought up by her grandmother, Pew Kochaseni, who enrolled her at St. Josephs Convent School in Bangkok as a boarder, where she was raised as a Roman Catholic, and made many life-long friends. She did well academically, taking second place in the nation-wide university entrance examination for all of Thailand. She was offered a scholarship at one of the foremost universities in Thailand, but she declined it because she needed to work to support herself and her grandmother. She learnt to drive and bought a car. She was bilingual in Thai and English and worked in a number of international organizations in Bangkok, including the US Embassy and various airlines. She translated documents and tutored privately. She tutored Thai to Hsien-hsu Cho, the military attaché from the Republic of China government, that had evacuated to Taiwan after their defeat by communist army lead by Mao Tse-tung. married and had a son, Nicholas. Cho was a presbyterian and had been previously married, with two sons. lived together briefly in Thailand, Taiwan and Japan, but for many years she, with her son, lived and worked in Bangkok apart from her husband. She rented a house for herself, her grandmother and her younger cousins. had few luxuries - basic furniture, a radio, a record player with one record. She and her husband decided that they will live in Thailand. She adopted Thai citizenship and changed her name to Prachumporn Chotiros, in accordance with Thai regulations. Meanwhile, her husband was assigned to the Chinese embassy in Seoul, Korea. She spent a year there with him in 1956. She returned to Bangkok with her son, and designed and built a comfortable two storey house, with teak floors, a garage and a separate apartment for her grandmother, on the outskirts of town in preparation for the day when they would be together. Her grandmother planted several fruit trees around the house, including mangoes, bananas and jack fruit. In 1962, Cho was assigned to the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok as an adviser, and they were able to resume their life together. It was a happy reunion. did many things together, such as going to the beach and a second honeymoon in Europe. lived comfortably, attending official functions and parties, with a chauffeured car at their disposal, befitting his position and good connections. were members of the Royal Bangkok Sports and Polo Clubs. She was a doting mother and spent her savings to send her son to Mount St. Marys , a Jesuit boarding school in England. Her husband died suddenly in 1966, a year before he was due to retire. Their retirement plans were shattered. Shortly thereafter, her grandmother died. She continued to work to support herself and keep her son in school. She translated books and worked as a secretary. Her son completed his studies, married, and her first grand child, Kathleya was born in England. Later he settled into a job at The University of Texas in Austin, and Carissa and Joseph were born. In 1990, she sold the family home in Bangkok, which due to urban growth was no longer on the outskirts of Bangkok, and left Thailand to live with her son and his family in Austin, Texas. In 1995, her son was divorced, and she lived with him and his three children. She became a US citizen and worked in several positions at Family Elder and the Senior Aides Program. In 1998, she moved into The Village Christian Apartments and enjoyed independent living within a community of seniors. She enjoyed living in her apartment, which she furnished with many items from her house in Bangkok, and the short walk to the nearby shops. In 2000, her son married Dana, with whom she became very close. In 2004, Nicholas Jr. was born, but, later that year, she suffered renal failure. There were advance signs but they were not recognized, until her condition became critical. She was hospitalized for several months. Dana took charge of her care and her affairs while her son had to work in the D.C. area. Daily visits by Dana with Nicholas Jr. in tow, and visits by her grand children and close friends, gave a her a new determination to live. No longer able to live independently, she moved into the Gracy Woods I , where she received the medical attention that she needed, which included dialysis three times a week and physical therapy. She resided there for over six years. Her youngest grandson, Alexander, was born in 2006, and she was a doting grandmother. She was delighted when her eldest granddaughter, Kathleya, married Ian Moore in the summer of 2010. She only regretted that she was not well enough to attend the wedding. On 24 2010, she fell and broke her hip. The partial hip replacement surgery went well, but continued... |
