Obituary: Truett Lamar Chance, PhD 23, 1913 - 19, 2007 Truett L. Chance was born on the family farm near Liberty Hill to Edgar Lee and Edith Alma Chance, a pioneering Texas family descending from Captain Joseph Bell Chance, who came to Texas from Tennessee in 1831, settled at Washington-on-the-Brazos as part of Stephen F. AustinÂs Second Colony and fought for an independent Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto. Truett L. Chance left Liberty Hill in the midst of the great depression to pursue higher education at the Southwest Texas State TeacherÂs . As a student he was employed in various positions such as campus laborer and janitor; ultimately attaining the highest paying job on campus, as editor of ÂThe Star the campus newspaper. As a member of the White Stars many friendships were formed that lasted a lifetime. It was in San Marcos where he met his future wife of 54 years, Opal Goodwin of Stockdale, Texas. Upon graduation in 1936 both began their teaching careers in small town Texas schoolhouses. Chance earned his MasterÂs degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1940 while teaching and serving as principal in Stockdale and Floresville. serving 18 months in the Pacific during World War II, he began as a social sciences instructor in 1947 at San Antonio Junior . During his over 35 years of service to San Antonio , Truett taught courses in history, economics, and government, as well as serving as chairman of various departments and establishing the Faculty Senate and the San Antonio Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Constantly in the pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Chance was conferred a PhD in Government in 1970 by commuting to classes at the University of Texas at Austin as schedules permitted. In 1975 Chance became Dean and later President of the , however he continued to make the students his first priority. Retirement was taken in 1982 but separation from the was not; in 1997 the Truett L. Chance Academic was dedicated. ÂHis Building was often a recent topic of conversation and excuse for a field trip. In his retirement Chance served as Chairman of the San Antonio Public Library Board, on the Board of Goodwill Industries, the Advisory Council of Foster Grandparents and as a proud member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. A man of wide-ranging interests, Truett Chance was an avid gardener, Cowboys and Spurs fan, amateur weatherman, daily napper, picky yet enthusiastic eater and competitive Â42 player. Chance lived a full and happy life, filled with many memorable events; he was an inspiration to family and friends, and his legacy of success and achievement will long live in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Opal Goodwin Chance; and brothers, Coleman and Luther Chance. Dr. Chance is survived by his daughter, Trudy Chance Kinnison and her husband Paul Kinnison, Jr, grandchildren, Abigail Ruth Kinnison and Paul Chance Kinnison and dear friend Pat Griffith all of San Antonio; sister, Mary Ruth Strandtmann of San Marcos, nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors at Porter Loring from 4:00 P.M.to 8:00 P.M. on , 25, 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice or to the Truett L. Obituary: Patsy Ruth (Patti) Clement Chance transitioned to the greater life on , 7, 2016 at Brentwood Terrace care and Rehabilitation . She was born 23, 1936, in Milton, Texas to Lonnie Edward and Elsie Worthey Clement. She graduated from East Lamar High School, and attended Paris Junior and North Texas University. Patti married Tony Chance on 12, 1955. She was preceded in death by her son Martin and her parents. She is survived by her husband Tony and her sons Michael and Brett; grandsons Jeremy, Conner and Caden,; granddaughters Corie, Courtney and Kaleigh; brothers Lonnie and Wayne Clement ; sisters Louise Lazarene, Dorothy Bailey and Martha Bailey. Patti last served as loan officer for Sandia Labs Federal Credit Union in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before returning home to Paris in 1998. She spent her last seven years of life at Brentwood Terrace . Her family wants to give special thanks for the kind and most tender care they received for their Wife and Mother from the nurses and nurse aids and staff at Brentwood Terrace. services are scheduled for 10:30 am, 10, 2016 at Bright-Holland Chapel with Reverend Rob Spencer and The Reverend Betty Clement officiating. Obituary: On 7, 2007, in the 91st year of her life, Melba G. Chance crossed over to be with her LORD and Savior. She was surrounded by loved ones, including her husband, son and daughter-in-law, with whom she made her home. Melba was born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the eldest of eight children born to Ethel and Elijah Allison Greer. As the eldest she helped her mother raise the younger children as the family grew. Melba graduated from high school at 15 and then from Ashville Normal and Teachers that merged by Warren Wilson where she made life-long friends in a work-study environment. graduation, she taught 2nd grade and adult literacy for 2 years before meeting her husband Franklin Chance, Jr. of Knoxville, TN, who was the only man her brother felt was good enough for her. were married in 1939. While working with her executive husband in New York City, she also took a continued role in education, becoming the President of the Queens Borough Parent Teachers Association. Melba also had a creative side which was reflected in her sewing and craft work. Some of the most enjoyable years of her life were at the beginning of her retirement when she joined the dedicated people of Moral Re-Armament in creating Mackinac , where Franklin was on the faculty. When she moved to Florida to care for her mother and mother-in-law, she became active in the Punta Gorda United Methodist Church and the Francis Rigell Circle of the United Methodist Women as well as the Punta Gorda Club of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Of the many joys of their retirement in Florida she always considered her many friends to be of utmost importance. Before they left in 2002, to be with her son in Texas, she was giving inspirational invocations for three civic and social groups, as well as being active in the Inner Wheel of the local Rotary Club. Melba is survived by her husband of 67 years, Franklin; son and daughter-in-law, John and Kay Chance of Bulverde; daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Michael Shakeshaft of Lanesborough, MA; grandchildren, Julia and Catherine Britell, Julie Lindsey and husband, Ken, Franklin Chance IV, Susannah Chance; and 3 great-grandchildren. She also leaves sisters, Dorothy Nassar and husband, Tony, Carolyn Bly and husband, Allan; brothers, John and Clyde Greer and their families. Her eldest son, Franklin III; brother, Elijah Allison; sisters, Isabella and Jenny preceded her in death. She and her family would like to thank the caregivers of Instead, Griswold Senior and the wonderful nurses and staff of Hope Hospice for their loving care these last years.
