Obituary: Vada Ray Chalker Born: May 2, 1926 in Lawn, TX Died: 8, 2015 in Dallas, TX Vada Ray Chalker passed away at the age of 89 on , 8, 2015 in Dallas, TX. Vada is survived by her three sons: Daniel (55) and his wife Cherry, David (53) and his wife Julia, and Jason (47) and his wife Lisa. She was a proud and loving grandmother to six grandchildren: Jessica, Daniel Jr., Hannah, Noah, Caleb and Phoebe. Vada was preceded in death by Durwood, her husband of almost 56 years, her sisters Margie and Margaret, and brothers Hubert, Ralph and Sidney Jr. Vadas parents were Sidney Hubert McAdams, Sr. and Nettie May Cannon McAdams. Vada was born on May 2, 1926 in Lawn, TX. Her family moved to nearby Abilene, TX where she graduated from Abilene High School. Her father, Sid McAdams, was Sheriff of Taylor from 1937 to 1942. Vada often told stories of that time in her life as her family lived at the jail where they cooked meals and cared for the prisoners housed there. She attended Hardin Simmons in Abilene before moving to El Paso, TX to work for Moodys Investors Service, Inc. a brief period of time she moved back to Abilene to be close to her family. She worked for Rodden Studios for many years as a photographer, print maker and retouch artist. In 1953 she met and married Durwood Chalker, a young Electrical Engineer at West Texas Utilities. a brief period in San Angelo, TX where their son Daniel was born, Durwood and Vada settled in Abilene where David and Jason were born. Durwoods career took them to Corpus Christi, TX in 1979 and then to Dallas, TX in 1980 where she lived the remainder of her life. Throughout her life Vada remained a West Texas girl at heart. She was always kind to everyone, humble in spirit and served others wherever there was a need. She loved music, shopping, dancing, traveling, drinking coffee, chocolate, and had a quick wit about her. She was strong and tough in a quiet, gentle way. Fiercely loyal to family and friends, she would speak her mind and stand for what was right. Her late husband Durwood often credited her for his success in the business world. He knew that he could always count on her as did her family and friends. Vada was known for her hospitality, sense of humor, and her constant willingness to sacrifice her needs and wants to help others. If you needed a meal, a friendly ear, or someone to take care of you when you were sick, Vada would always be there. She was the salt of the earth who lived so that those around her would have a fuller, richer and more meaningful life. To know her was to love her. To be in her presence was to feel valued, loved and honored. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on , 13, 2015 at Chapel East in Hillcrest Mausoleum at Sparkman-Hillcrest in Dallas, Texas. Obituary: Durwood Chalker passed away at the age of 86 shortly after 9:00pm on , 14, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Durwood is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Vada Ray (83) and his three sons: Daniel (Cherry), David (Julia) and Jason. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Jessica, Daniel II, Hannah, Noah, Caleb and Phoebe. Durwood was preceded in death by his parents, Robert N. and Leona Cook Chalker, a sister and three brothers. His surviving siblings are Merle Wilcox (sister) of Cisco and Sam Chalker (brother) of Bastrop. Durwood was born on 22, 1923 in Eolian, TX. He answered his countrys call and enlisted in the Navy in of 1943 in the submarine service. During his service in World War II, he achieved the rank of Radioman, 2nd Class and was stationed on Guam for the bulk of his service. Durwood was honorably discharged in of 1946. the war, Durwood attended Texas A&M and graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1950. Shortly thereafter he began work as a junior engineer at West Texas Utilities in Abilene, Texas. A friend introduced him to Vada Ray McAdams in 1953. Durwood and Vada hit it off, and were wed in of that year. Durwood continued working hard at West Texas Utilities and became president in 1975. He was very active in the Abilene community until he was transferred to Corpus Christi, Texas to be president of Central Power and Light in 1979. He was quickly promoted again to CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the holding company, Central and Southwest Corporation based in Dallas, Texas in 1980. He continued on in that position until his retirement in 1988. During his retirement he continued to enjoy playing golf, jogging and reading. He was especially happy to have more time to be a doting grandfather. Throughout his life, Durwood always made time for his family, many charities and worthwhile causes. He served as a director or trustee for many organizations, such as the Communities Foundation of Texas, the Boy Scouts Circle Ten Council (for which he was awarded the Silver Beaver), the Sammons Foundation, the Texas A&M 12th Man Foundation, the Texas A&M Chancellors Century Council and others. Durwood was a die hard Aggie, loved to laugh and was never one to simply watch life go by. Even with all of his success in the business world and his many awards and achievements, Durwood remained a humble, honest West Texas country boy at heart. Durwood Chalker was a wonderful man who led an amazing life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on , 18, 2009 in Ellis Chapel at Park Cities Baptist Church,3933 NW Parkway, in Dallas, Texas.
