She was also blessed to have over the years made numerous wonderful and loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Hazel Kohleffel. Helen is survived by her devoted children: Michael Dane Carr, his wife Bonnie and their son, Edward Leonard; and Frances Lorraine Karwowski and her son, Joseph Edward Karwowski III. Obituary: Gladys Weatherby Carr, born 17, 1919 in San Saba Texas died peacefully in her home on 2, 2016 with her devoted son, William Plack Carr, Jr. and her doting caretakers by her side. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and son, William Plack Carr and Marvin Weatherby Carr. She is survived by her son, William Plack Carr, Jr. and his wife Cissy Carr; her daughter, Catherine Ann Carr and her daughter-in-law, Peggy Carr. She is survived by six grandchildren: Leslie Carr, Plack Carr III and his wife Carol Carr, Sarah Carr, Christy Nichols, David and Kelly Nichols and Catherine Carr; and, 14 great-grandchildren: Will and Hunter Meldman, Jake Laura, Lena and Trem Carr, Paul and Matthew Cox, Brooks and Max Roberts and Katherine, Allie and John Thomas Brookman. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to her long-time care givers whose strength, compassion and love made her life comfortable and her passing peaceful: Zella Evans, Bobbi Glover, Magdelena Trejo, Teresa Lopez, Nick Villa, Faith Presbyterian Hospice and Senior Bridge, Humana At (Ava Mumprhey, Alice Jonah, Beatrice Johnson, Joyce Wilson, Afua Asamoah and Catherine Owang) One word: Yellow. Known to her family as Sismama and her many, many friends as the Yellow Rose of Texas, she was an amazing source of energy, light, love and inspiration. There are few people who could consistently wear one color for so long with grace, style and sophistication. She will be remembered for her graciousness, intelligence, humility, kindness and especially her love for her family and her sense of humor. She possessed an amazing sense of humor, and incredible insight and throughout her life showed a deep understanding and empathy towards others. Her civic and volunteer contributions were innumerable, spanning across the city of Dallas, culminating with over 60 years of service to local and national volunteer organizations. It was the performing arts, however, that held a special place in her heart. Her friends and energy within these groups were boundless. She was a Founder, Chairman and/or a lifetime board member of many local and national groups and she gave tirelessly to each and every group. Dallas Ballet: She was active on the Dallas Ballet Board from 1957-1989. During this time it emerged from a civic Ballet to a professional company in 1978-1979. Around that time the newly renovated Majestic Theater became its home - Sis was Chairman of the Gala Opening Event to benefit the Ballet and celebrate the performance in the beautiful theater. Sis, along with many other notable Dallasites, introduced the joint venture with the highly regarded Ft. Worth Ballet, which became a single entity known today as The Texas Ballet Theater. Sis was the chairman of the Dallas Supports beginning in 1994-1995 and remained so until 2001 season when she became Chairman Emeritus. In 2005, Ben Stevenson, Director of the Texas Ballet Theater and long-time friend of Sis Carrs, created an evening of dance in her honor designed to celebrate her contributions to the Texas Ballet. TACA: She was a founding member of TACA and sat on its board until 2001. She, along with her late husband Plack chaired Television Auctions and Parties as well as many other responsibilities including President of the Board and Chariman Emeritus. Dallas Symphony Orchestra: Past President of the Symphony League and Co-organizer of the Benefactors Program. Dallas Theater : She was instrumental in raising money for the Frank Lloyd Wright Building and assisted in the organization of a Womens Committee and served as its second President. Friends of WRR Classical 101FM: She worked to organize the Friends of WRR, a group that worked tirelessly to maintain the station as a city-owned entity and organized events for children. She was former President of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra; member of the Charter 100, board member and Chairman of conducting auditions for National Council of Metropolitan Opera, long-time board member of TITAS, The Dallas Opera, The Dallas Garden , Dallas Childrens Theater , Dallas Summer Musicals and countless more. Her honors and awards include: Dallas Dance Councils Mary McCherry Bywaters Award for lifetime contributions to dance; Sammon for the Arts Queen of Hearts Award; Dallas Theater s Stage Gala Honoree; Dallas Historical Society Award for Excellence, Family of the Year Award of the YMCA Award of Metropolitan Dallas; Juanita and Henry Miller Opera Award; of Dimes Obelisk Award; Flora Award; Grand Dame Award; Opera Guild Sweetheart of the Year Award; TACA James K Wilson Silver Cup Award and many, many more. A memorial service in her honor will be held , 4 at 11:00am at St. Michael and All Angels Church, 8011 Douglas Avenue, Dallas TX 75225. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to any of the organizations listed above. |
