Obituary: Robert W. Bob Carlson departed life on 9, 2011. Bob was born 19, 1941 in Huntington Woods, Michigan to Genevieve M. Doran and William E. Carlson. He attended school there at Burton Elementary until he became a boarding student at the Hall of the Divine Child military school in Monroe Michigan. As a student at the Hall he enjoyed his activities with the Band and sports, particularly football and basketball. He graduated in 1955. Going on to several high schools from Canada to Kentucky and finally to St. Theresas in Detroit. He got further involved in band music at St. Theresas and was recognized in his junior year by the Metropolitan Detroit Science Fair. Bob graduated in 1959. Bob then went on to Highland Park Junior and later to Wayne State University, where he graduated from in 1968. Working his way through college during this time, Bob enjoyed sports cars and canoeing the Au Sable River from Grayling to Lake Huron with his college friend Sam Rizzo. Bob married his college sweetheart, Sharon Cashman during this time and they had three daughters. Bobs working career began with banking where he worked in the Trust Departments of several local banks. He was also associated with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. In 1970 he diverted to owning three gift shops in the Metro Detroit area called Ole! These stores specialized in those things Mexican giving Bob a lifelong interest in anything Mexican and a chance to use his less than fluid Spanish. By 1975 it was time to move on and Bob wanted to go back to banking and he met Johnston while in Chicago who recruited him to the Bexar National Bank in San Antonio. Bob never looked back. He fell unabashedly in love with San Antonio. He found that the people were very open and genuinely warm. In the late 70s Bob began to feel his mission in life was to find ways to give back to his community. He joined the Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs and went on to be its president in 1983. He also joined the Alamo Kiwanis Club in 1979 and served as president in 1987 and as Lt. Governor of the Oklahoma District in 1989-1990. Without a doubt Bobs greatest love came about when he was chairman for the Alamo Kiwanis production of Fiesta Noche Del Rio. Bob was there for every performance that summer and fell in love with the Arneson River Theatre. He observed the run down condition of the theatre from lack of maintenance over time and decided he would fix it up. Creating the master plan and finding people like minded to him he forged ahead and over the years was able to raise and spend more than $750, 000 to fix it up. Not satisfied there he also rose through a private foundation another $1, 300, 000 to fund future support. Bobs career in banking brought him to NBC Bank San Antonio where he served as a Senior Vice President and manager of the Personal Trust Department. He stayed until 1991 when he transferred to Broadway National Bank where he served until 2005 as Senior Vice President in its Trust Advisory and Wealth Management Group. Bob also got interested in the restoration of the Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park and had strong feelings about the importance of restoring this very vital spot. He saw it as a special gathering place for residents to come and reflect on its beauty and hopefully to enjoy a nice meal at a restaurant to be built there. In keeping with Bobs core belief to give back to the community, Bob felt privileged to serve on many community Boards of Directors including the San Antonio Symphony, Beethoven Maennerchor, Boys and Girls Clubs, Sarah Roberts French , Friends of the Parks, Society for the Preservation of Historic Ft. Sam Houston and Fiesta San Antonio Commission, to name a few. During his long Fiesta career Bob served as President in 1992 and was pleased to have forged a partnership that year with the Cherry Festival in Traverse City Michigan where his mother had come from. He also took great pleasure in the dynamic growth of the Commission from the early 90s over the next decade and helping guide diversity of leadership in the Commission. Bob is survived by his wife, Joy Roane-Carlson and by his daughter, Christine Seiz of San Antonio and her husband, Ray and their daughter, Lauren; daughter, Colleen Rivenburgh of Clarkston, MI, and her husband, Mike, along with their children, Kyle and Kelley. He is also survived by his daughter Cindy Gordon of Tampa, Florida and her husband, Steve and her children, Justin, Jordyn and Avery. He will miss all of them. Bob was a member of several clubs including the Club Giraud, The Conopus Club, The Beethoven Mannerchor where he was both an honorary and life member, The Alamo Kiwanis Club and the Players Club of Detroit, MI. Bob would tell you he never intended to be involved in Parks but he just accidentally fell into it. He never intended to be involved in Preservation but he just fell into it. His association with the Society at Ft. Sam Houston gave him immense satisfaction and a great and abiding respect for the men and women in uniform services. SERVICE TUESDAY JUNE 14, 2011 12:30 P.M. Obituary: Peter B. Carlson, YN2 USNR Ret.. Peter was born on 29, 1933 in the Phillipine Islands. He died peacefully at his home 16, 2007, having fought a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Walter and Luretta Carlson. Peter never knew a stranger. He was simple and complex, honest and compassionate. Peter liked buying new cars, driving fast, and cruising through the neighborhood honking his horn, playing taxi cab for his friends. He enjoyed making new friends, listening to Johnny Cash and LeAnn Rimes, welcoming new neighbors, worrying about things, talking about his military times, eating out, flying the American flag in front of his home which he always illuminated at night; he loved to whistle, play solitaire, balance his checkbook, go to the bank, helping his neighbors carry empty trash cans from the street to their houses; and picking up their newspapers from the yard and delivering them to their front door. He liked to wear old clothes, flirting with younger women, to ring door bells repeatedly, soap operas, pizza and big MacÂs, taking breakfast tacos or donuts to the veterinarianÂs office and car dealerships, sharing with the mail carriers and his doctors ~ but he liked the nurses more! He really appreciated his caregivers who did so much for him this last year, especially Pat, Tami and La Shon of Senior Bridge and the nurses of Vista Hospice. Peter is survived by his cousins, Bob Girton and Judy Butler, and his beloved dog, Joy. Also, his long-time friends, Ann and Richard Kelley and devoted neighbors who were his family. Visitation will be on , 21st from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
